Chapter 357 - The Architecture of Empire

The laboratory in the sub-basement of the Mechanist Institute was built to contain failure. The walls were four feet of reinforced stonesteel. The blast doors were sealed with heavy rubber gaskets. The observation window was thick leaded glass, capable of withstanding the concussive force of a detonating forge-fire engine.

Lenna Ashvane stood behind the glass, her hands clasped tightly behind her back. She did not blink.

On the opposite side of the glass, resting on a heavy iron pedestal in the center of the blast chamber, was a Rank 3 structural integrity rune. It was carved into a block of raw granite, the lines filled with refined cinnaite powder.

There was no Crucible priest in the room. There was no holy water, no litany, no prayer offered to the Sovereign.

There was only a complex arrangement of copper coils, aetheric capacitors, and a massive Mark X steam turbine providing mechanical rotational energy.
