Chapter 304 - The Sword Saint's Criteria

She signed the page and handed it to her aide without looking at it twice.

The document was important — important in the way that documents are important when they change who gets to decide things — but she'd written six drafts over nine months and revised each one until the language was precise enough that ambiguity couldn't live in it, and if the language still contained ambiguity after nine months of revision, then the problem was not the language but the fact that she was trying to make human nature precise, which was a different kind of engineering than ironwork and considerably less responsive to revision.

The aide — Lieutenant Karrek, Human, thirty-one, assigned to the Sword Saint's administrative staff because he filed documents correctly and did not ask unnecessary questions — took the page and left.
