Chapter 279 - The First Run

The boiler casing cracked at fourteen seconds.

Tikk Copperwire heard it before he saw it — a sound like a knuckle popping, except the knuckle was a pressurized iron vessel the size of a wine barrel and the pop was a fracture line running diagonally from the upper weld seam to the drain valve. Steam erupted from the crack in a white column that hit the test yard's ceiling beams and flattened across the rafters like fog rolling in sideways.

"Vent the pressure line," Tikk said. Already moving. His hands found the emergency release — a brass lever he'd installed after Prototype Zero had nearly taken his left ear — and yanked it down. The boiler wheezed, coughed, and settled into a ticking silence, steam curling from the fracture like breath from a wounded animal.

The test yard went quiet.
