Agent Pale-Seven's report — Chapter 170, twenty-nine days ago — had identified the swamp bypass as Phase Two of Operation Verdant Storm: Gorvahn's Mireist forces using the marshland corridors east of the Ashwall to circumvent the fortification entirely, entering the kingdom's southern territory through terrain that conventional armies could not navigate but that Frogman amphibious infantry could traverse at half their normal marching speed.
The prediction was accurate. The timing was early.
On the war's second morning, the Forward Observation Post at Marshgrove Station — a minor defensive position twelve kilometers east of the Ashwall's eastern terminus — reported contact with Frogman infantry emerging from the Veth Marshes.
