The next day, I arrived at the office unusually early.
"Brother Liao, did the sun rise from the west today? You actually didn't show up at the last minute," teased Li Meng, the receptionist, as soon as she saw me.
Instead of heading straight to my office, I squinted and grinned, giving her a thorough once-over from head to toe.
Li Meng had joined the company right after graduating from university. With her good looks, stylish dressing, and cheerful personality, she had always been in charge of reception duties and managed the other receptionists at the front desk.
As soon as my wife mentioned yesterday that Liao Wen was looking for a girlfriend, Li Meng immediately came to mind. Her personality complemented Liao Wen's perfectly. Moreover, as an employee of our small, third-tier company, she wouldn't look down on someone like Liao Wen. In every aspect, I thought they were a great match. That's why I had confidently promised my wife that I'd take care of finding Liao Wen a girlfriend.
Li Meng grew uncomfortable under my gaze and pouted, saying, "Brother Liao, why are you staring at me like that? You're making me blush."
I chuckled and leaned over the front desk, lowering my voice to ask, "I've never asked you before—do you have a boyfriend?"
"No, why do you ask?" she replied, sounding somewhat wary.
My heart leaped with joy. I had been worried she might already be taken, which would have ruined all my efforts. Since she was single, there was hope. I quickly smiled and said, "Tomorrow's the weekend. Are you free? Let me treat you to a meal."
Li Meng gave me a strange, almost disdainful look and said, "Brother Liao, I'm a decent person. If you're looking for a fling, you've got the wrong girl. You should ask someone else."
"That's great, I knew I didn't misjudge you." I felt a surge of joy in my heart and quickly explained, "Don't misunderstand—I just want to introduce you to a boyfriend."
As I spoke, I hurriedly took out my phone, pulled up Liao Wen's photo to show Li Meng, and eagerly began describing Liao Wen's situation.
After listening to my introduction, Li Meng hesitated for a long while before finally nodding and saying, "Alright, since Brother Liao has praised him to the skies, I suppose meeting him won't hurt. But let's be clear upfront—if we don't click, you can't keep pestering me about it, and we'll never bring it up again."
I nodded repeatedly in agreement. After arranging to have lunch with Li Meng the next day, I rushed back to the office in high spirits and couldn't wait to call my wife to update her on the situation. I asked her to coordinate with Liao Wen, hoping to bring the two together.
It wasn't until late afternoon, almost time to leave work, that my wife finally replied, saying Liao Wen had agreed to meet. Delighted, I leaned back in my chair, scheming about how to matchmake the two while feeling quite proud of my brilliant pairing.
Suddenly, the door to my office was pushed open abruptly, and Li Meng rushed in, looking flustered.
"What's wrong? Can't wait already?" I joked.
"Brother Liao, you need to go check it out. Someone's causing trouble, and Manager Wang might be in trouble," Li Meng said urgently.
"Who is it?" I frowned.
"A middle-aged man. I don't know what he's here for, but he barged straight into Manager Wang's office. From the sounds of it, things might have gotten physical," Li Meng's tone grew increasingly anxious.
"Physical? I'm on my way. Go downstairs and call security up here," I quickly stood up, instructing Li Meng to fetch security while hurrying toward Wang Di's office.
Outside Wang Di's office, several colleagues had gathered, whispering and murmuring among themselves, but no one dared to step in and help.
This is how workplaces often are—people tend to stay out of matters that don't concern them, secretly hoping for bigger drama just to enjoy the spectacle.
I instantly felt a surge of anger and snapped, "Don't you all have work to do? Get back to it."
A few colleagues glanced at me, rolled their eyes, and left. Just then, a sharp cry from Wang Di echoed from inside the office. I immediately pushed the door open and rushed in.
Wang Di was half-lying on the floor, one hand propping her up as she struggled to rise. Her hair was disheveled, and several muddy footprints stained her white blouse.
I hurried over to help her up, only then noticing a clear handprint on her cheek. Her fair skin was swollen and red, and a trace of blood lingered at the corner of her mouth.
"Are you okay?" I asked softly, frowning.
Wang Di shook her head gently at me. Her eyes were red, tears glistening but never falling. Her resilience took me by surprise, and I felt an unexpected pang of sympathy.
I looked up angrily at the man who had attacked her. He was middle-aged, probably in his forties, slightly overweight but with sharp, handsome features. His slicked-back hair gleamed with oil, giving him a polished yet despicable appearance.
Although I'm usually quite amiable, even a bit timid, I absolutely cannot stand bullying, and I especially despise seeing a man hit a woman. The scene before me ignited a surge of anger, and I instinctively clenched my fists. Suppressing my fury, I said, "I don't care who you are. Leave immediately, or I'll call the police."
The middle-aged man gave me a contemptuous smirk and retorted, "Who do you think you are? Trying to meddle in my family affairs?"
I frowned slightly, glancing at Wang Di in confusion. To my surprise, she suddenly wrapped her arm around mine and declared, "He's my boyfriend. He has every right to get involved."
The middle-aged man burst into laughter as if he had heard the funniest joke, clutching his stomach and saying, "Wang Di, oh Wang Di, your taste has really gone downhill since you left me. What kind of trash have you picked up?"
"He Dongxiang, we've been divorced for eight years. We have nothing to do with each other anymore. Why are you back?" Wang Di gritted her teeth as she spoke.
"When we divorced, I left you over two million in assets. Now I'm just asking for five hundred thousand—is that too much? I'll ask you one last time: are you giving it to me or not?" He Dongxiang stopped laughing, his tone turning sinister.
Finally, I understood. This middle-aged man named He Dongxiang was Wang Di's ex-husband, and he had come back to demand money from her.
Though furious, as an outsider, I knew it wasn't my place to interfere. I could only suppress my anger and watch helplessly from the sidelines.
"Give up on that idea. Most of that money was earned by me, and our divorce happened because of your affairs. You deserved to leave with nothing," Wang Di spat through clenched teeth.
"You shameless bitch! Do you really want me to get rough?" He Dongxiang roared. Before his words even faded, he slapped Wang Di across the face with full force. The blow was so hard that she staggered and fell into my arms.
In that instant, my anger erupted. I could no longer hold back. Steadying Wang Di, I threw a punch at He Dongxiang's nose without a second thought.
He Dongxiang stumbled backward several steps, blood immediately gushing from his nose. Clutching his face, he cursed, "You bastard! How dare you hit me?"
"I'm hitting you because you're scum!" I shouted, charging forward and raining blows on his head.
He Dongxiang was slightly overweight and looked intimidating, but he was all bark and no bite. Though he tried to fight back, he was no match for me.
I was completely consumed by rage, striking without mercy. By the time Li Meng rushed in with security, He Dongxiang's face was bruised and swollen, barely recognizable.
