Chapter 4 - 『3: Know Thy Self』

Having finished my inspiring encounter with Eblyss, I made some headway into my journey. While I walked, I looked at every single plant around me.

『Starlight Glory:

A flower crystallised from the tears of Tretros, God of Dancing Stars.

Thrives in mana-rich environments.

The luminescent oil within its bulb accelerates healing and fortifies tissue.

Rarity: A』

I picked up the flower, inspecting it. It was a flower with violet petals that contrasted beautifully with the large glowing bulb in the centre of it. I lightly touched it, and a drop of oil trickled out of the bulb.

The flora in this world is simply remarkable.

I placed the flower into the makeshift bag I had created using the bark of an interestingly useful tree I passed by.

『Swaying Oak:

A tree with incredibly elastic wood and bark that dances even in the slightest breeze.

Rarity: D-』

I used my nails—which I found out were quite sharp and strong—to cut out the bark. I stitched it using strands of wood I had made into thin rope-like string, and now I had myself a bag.

I can freely collect any interesting herbs I find on the forest floor.

You simply have to adore the convenience of it all.

I even tested the sharpness of my nails. I looked at my nails in the sunlight.

Quite effective. They receive my approval.

This strange magical tool of mine has been quite handy as well.

I looked around as the strange picture with words followed me. A sudden thought popped into my mind.

I wonder if I can see myself with this thing.

As I thought of it, the device now had a picture of me in the corner of its page and information about me.

My, my, my! What a treasure you are, little one!

Now let's see what all this is about.

I pressed the information on Nephilim.

『Nephilim:

A unique being synthesised from Angelic, Demonic, and Mortal energies.

Does not require sleep, sustenance, or breath, though can derive benefit from them.

Rarity: Unknown』

Such little information. I suppose that is to be expected; I am supposedly the first of my kind.

Hmmmm.

What's this 'Unknown' under my name?

『Name: Unknown

Being does not currently have a name.

A name can be granted to the being.』

Seems as if my body does not have a name.

Strange to give me the body of a ten-year-old that is nameless.

Even orphans are given names, which I suppose I am.

I'll have to think of a name for myself, preferably before I encounter a settlement.

Moving on, I focused on the title information.

『Title:

An achievement that one earns for achieving something great.』

Wow...

Even I could have deduced that much!

I rolled my eyes at the simple information displayed.

I thought back to Eblyss; its title was Storm Whisperer.

Was that title granted for being able to call upon storms?

Seems quite the powerful title, befitting of the great Eblyss, of course.

I turned my attention to the next three entries: Spirit, Physique, and Sentience. There were also letters attached to these. I wonder what they are about.

『Spirit:

The Spirit (W - Weak):

The totality of your spiritual capacity and connection to immaterial forces.

Your spiritual strength is currently underdeveloped for your species.

Physique (W - Weak):

The totality of your bodily strength, endurance, and resilience.

Your physical form is currently underdeveloped for your species.

Sentience (E+ - Elite+):

The totality of your cognitive capacity, wisdom, and perceptual acuity.

Your mind operates at an Elite level, nearing Royal-tier comprehension for your species.』

From what I can tell, these are a sort of diagnosis similar to the ones I gave my patients; however, they are related to that of the soul, mind, and body.

It also seems that they are measured on the basis of where my species is supposed to function in each category relative to how I function.

If that is the case, it seems my mind is the most extraordinary thing about me at the moment. I was a bit of a scholar in my old life. Knowledge is power, as they say.

I stared at the information, something holding my train of thought for a moment too long.

How is this measurement derived?

I am supposedly the first of my kind, yet it clearly knows the base level my species should operate at...

How peculiar...

I looked up to the clear sky and sighed, brushing the thoughts aside.

No use in worrying about it now.

Aspects were the next entry I saw. I remembered that strange voice speaking of Aspects and Laws; now I can figure out what exactly it was going on about.

I focused on Aspects.

『Aspects:

Celestial Defiance:

One who denies the Heavens above.

Infernal Resistance:

One who repels Hell below.

Mortal Impossibilities:

One who possesses the freedom of mortality.

Spiritual Alterations:

One who dominates the spirit.』

I read through the list of my Aspects.

Why so little information?

I do not even know what Aspects are.

I rubbed my temples.

From what I can currently gather:

It seems I am the enemy of both Heaven and Hell. How unfortunate; I already have a target placed on me.

I am somehow free from something. I do not know what, but I am free from it.

And I somehow dominate spirits. Maybe I can vanquish malevolent ghouls?

All of it is unbearably vague.

Haaaa.

I sighed, seeing as there was nothing to be done about it. I continued to the final icon that flashed in my view: Laws.

『Laws:

Flames Of Morality:

Burn away the grudges.

Sublimation:

Free all from impurities.

Divergence:

Unbind the course.

Inquisition:

Forbid the guise.』

I felt my eye twitch as I clenched my fist tight.

Incredibly vague, as ever, I see.

Haaa.

I sighed, releasing my rage.

The vagueness of this information is becoming quite annoying to deal with.

Let's see here.

First of all, I still do not understand the purpose of Laws.

From the name alone, I guess [Flames of Morality] has to do with fire.

My, I believe I just made a genius deduction.

I facepalmed at the obvious information I had just thought.

If there was anything else I could theorise about, it was the nature of the fire.

Since I am both a demonic and angelic being, I suppose it is not too far-fetched that my flames may be a combination of Holy Fire and Hellfire.

Next is Sublimation. It means to alter something to a desired form, yet it says here it has something to do with impurities.

Divergence is confusing... What course is it unbinding? The course of fate? Unlikely.

Lastly, Inquisition—if I were to guess, I'd say all the information I receive comes from this Law.

It seems I now have a name for this power.

I finally closed [Inquisition].

The information I gained, however vague, was still valuable nonetheless.

I stared at my free hand as I continued walking through the forest.

My top priority is finding a settlement with other people; I can worry about Laws and Aspects later.

I picked up the pace going a full speed, I held my tree bark bag tight. The world around me rushed past in a blur as I ran. This sensation was thrilling it felt as if the world did not matter.

The annoying thoughts faded replaced by adrenaline and joy. I decided to try a few things with my speed. I first sprung up high using the momentum of my running to boost my leap.

I soared through the sky, I am reasonable distance above the trees. For a few moments I was suspended in the air, I saw snow tipped mountains at the far end of my vision.

As I began descending I used my legs to shield my self from the fall.

As I collided with the ground it created a small crater and kicked up a dust cloud.

"Ha..ha...hahaha!"

I began laughing, I didn't really know the reason for the sudden fit laughter. I simply lay on my back inside the crater, gazing at the sky through the hole I had made in the canopy above. I let out a breath as leaves slowly fell down from broken branches.

I closed my eyes.

This would be the perfect place for a short, quiet nap. How I miss the ability to sleep.

Grrrrr.

My stomach rumbled. I realise I haven't eaten anything since I was reincarnated in this world. The only thing I had had were those sips of water from the River of Silence. I thought back to the river, its clear waters still etched into my mind.

『River of Silence:

A migratory magical river born from a being who embodied the Law of Silence.

It never remains in one location for more than a day.

Entities lingering within its sphere of influence when it moves are translocated with it, bound to its endless journey unless externally removed prior to its departure.

Its waters are perpetually pure and clarity-inducing, revitalising mind, body, and soul.

Excessive consumption results in permanent muteness.』

A moving river? Now I've heard it all.

It seems I will not be able to easily find Eblyss next time.

Grrrrr.

My stomach not-so-subtly reminded me that I was hungry.

I looked into my bag and took out a fruit that bore resemblance to an apple.

『Earth Apple:

The hearty fruit of the Deeproot Tree.

Possesses mild earth-aligned energies, promoting a sense of grounded stability.

Rarity: E』

I took a bite into the orange-colored apple. A sweet taste entered my tongue. It tastes exactly how an apple would taste, though much sweeter. It was much juicier than an apple, with some of the sweet liquid spilling out as I pierced the flesh with my fangs.

It is surprisingly difficult to find fruits in the forest; medicinal herbs and plants are plentiful; however, actual fruit is a different story altogether.

I was stunned to see the rarity of this fruit is so low; however, the much rarer herbs were plentiful.

I continued eating my apple.

When only the core was left, I threw it away.

Satisfied, I returned to gazing at the drifting clouds.

As calm had completely taken me, the ground began vibrating, disturbing my peace.

I opened my eyes and looked for the direction from which this sudden rumbling was coming. It had no discernible direction; it appeared as if it were coming from all directions at once.

Tremors erupted and roared from all around me, the rocks on the ground jumping up and down with the vibrations. I was still seated in the crater. I planned to stand up; however, I was interrupted by a herd of what seemed to be ox-sized boars rushing my way.

They all moved in a straight line, following their large leader.

They cared little for the trees in front of them. Their tusks cut down any obstacles on their sides, and their snouts bashed through wood as if it were fragile glass.

I panicked at the sheer size of the beasts, and that caused me to struggle to get up.

Before I could free myself, they were on top of me.

Their hooves came down on me like a storm. They carelessly stepped on my body as I screamed in pain.

I can feel everything in my body breaking apart—my muscles tearing under the barrage of hooves.

"Ahhhhhhh!"

Pain rushed through my body, and a gray fluid leaked out of my wounds and into the crater stain the earth and the hooves of the boars gray.

Is that my blo—!

I could barely think with everything happening around me. I could not stand. My body was constantly assaulted by heavy hooves.

The final hoof came down on my face, and everything went black.

...

Ugh, what happened?

I tried standing up; however, my body would not listen. In fact, I did not have a body at all.

My vision was not as I remembered; I could see on all sides of myself as if I had a multitude of eyes all over my body. I could not blink for even a second.

What happened to me?!

Oh, right...

I remembered everything that had happened with those boars.

Those damn swine! How dare they treat me as if I were a common insect!

Rage bubbled up in me, remembering the manner in which they had trampled upon my body as if I were apart of the ground itself.

I'll have their heads mounted on walls for this injustice! Each and every one of them!

As soon as I figure out what is happening with my body.

[Inquisition]!

The light of [Inquisition] filled my vision.

What's all this now?

Instead of my picture in the corner, there was a picture of a glass ball.

『Nephilim (Core Form):

The fundamental, spiritual core of a Nephilim.

Manifests automatically when the physical vessel sustains catastrophic damage.

In this state, spiritual defenses are maximised (D+ - Divine+), rendering the core nearly impervious to non-conceptual harm.

The core will gradually reconstruct a physical form using ambient energies and the core's own spiritual blueprint.』

So I did not die from the boars stampeding over me.

I breathed a sigh of relief. I had been worried that I was dead, or that my body was permanently damaged beyond repair.

『Laws:

The Aspect Protection shines through the Law of Sublimation.

Honestly, what am I expecting?

Haaa.

How long is this going to take? I have a group of runaway swine I need to teach a lesson!

It seems only time will tell.
