Chapter 118 - The Fifteenth Spring

Five months passed quietly after the rebellion.

Winter slowly gave way to spring, and the capital regained its lively atmosphere completely. The scars left by unrest had faded beneath the rhythm of ordinary life, while the influence of the Yue Family continued to rise steadily within the court.

And with spring came a day the Yue Mansion had been preparing for weeks.

Yue Ning's fifteenth birthday.

From early morning, the mansion was filled with movement. Servants hurried through the courtyards carrying trays of decorations and gifts while musicians prepared near the outer gardens. Lanterns of soft gold and crimson were hung across the estate, their colors glowing warmly beneath the clear daylight.

Unlike ordinary birthdays, a noble young lady's fifteenth year carried special meaning.

It marked the beginning of adulthood.

And for Yue Ning—already known throughout the capital as the Crown Prince's fiancée—the celebration had drawn attention from nearly every influential family within the empire.

By afternoon, carriages began arriving one after another outside the Yue Mansion gates.

Officials.

Noble families.

Young masters and ladies.

Even distant relatives who rarely appeared had come personally this time.

The atmosphere was lively, yet beneath it flowed careful observation. Everyone understood the importance of this gathering.

Inside the main courtyard, Yue Family members welcomed guests one after another.

Yue Ming stood near the entrance speaking calmly with several officials, while Yue Heng—now carrying far greater prestige after recent military achievements—remained beside him, his presence drawing respect wherever he stood.

Yue Liang and Yue Tao handled the younger nobles attempting to approach too boldly, while Yue Jun and Yue An moved between guests ensuring nothing lacked.

Even Yue Rui and Yue Bo, though younger, carried themselves far more confidently now than they had a year ago.

The Yue Family no longer resembled the quiet household that had first entered the capital years ago.

And everyone could see it.

Inside her chambers, Yue Ning sat before a mirror while attendants carefully adjusted the final details of her appearance.

Her robes were elegant yet not overly extravagant, layered in soft silver-white with delicate embroidery flowing like moonlight across the fabric. Her dark hair was partially pinned with jade ornaments, leaving the rest to fall naturally behind her.

She looked older now—not merely in appearance, but in presence.

Calmer.

More refined.

One of the attendants smiled softly. "Miss, everyone outside is already praising your beauty."

Yue Ning looked faintly amused. "They haven't even seen me yet."

"That's why they're impatient."

Another attendant added excitedly, "Even several young masters from noble families came early."

Yue Ning's expression did not change. "That must disappoint them."

The attendants immediately lowered their heads, trying not to laugh.

Everyone in the capital already knew.

No matter who appeared—

No one could compare to the Crown Prince.

A servant entered hurriedly and bowed. "Miss, His Highness has arrived."

The room quieted instantly.

Yue Ning's gaze lifted slightly.

Outside the mansion, the arrival of the Crown Prince had drawn immediate attention.

The imperial carriage stopped before the gates as guards stepped aside respectfully. Xu Chen emerged dressed in dark formal robes embroidered with subtle golden patterns. He carried no unnecessary decoration, yet his mere presence caused the atmosphere to shift instantly.

The conversations around the entrance softened.

Even senior officials straightened unconsciously.

Yue Ming stepped forward first. "Your Highness."

Xu Chen nodded lightly. "Mm."

Yue Heng bowed respectfully beside him, though his sharp eyes briefly carried amusement. "You arrived earlier than expected."

Xu Chen replied calmly, "I wasn't late."

Yue Liang immediately muttered under his breath, "That means he came early on purpose."

Yue Tao nearly laughed beside him.

Xu Chen ignored them completely.

The Emperor had sent gifts earlier through palace officials, but Xu Chen had still come personally.

And everyone understood what that meant.

As he entered the main courtyard, countless gazes followed him quietly.

Some respectful.

Some envious.

Some complicated.

But Xu Chen paid attention to none of them.

His gaze lifted slightly toward the inner residence just as movement appeared near the stairs.

Yue Ning walked into view.

For a brief moment—

The entire courtyard quieted.

The spring breeze moved lightly through the hanging lanterns as she descended slowly, calm and graceful beneath countless watching eyes.

Even those who had already heard rumors of her beauty seemed momentarily stunned.

Yue Ning's gaze swept calmly across the crowd before settling naturally on Xu Chen.

And stopped there.

Xu Chen looked at her steadily, his expression unchanged as always.

Yet those closest to him noticed it immediately.

His gaze softened.

Only slightly.

But enough.

Yue Ning walked toward the courtyard entrance where the main guests stood gathered. The Yue Family members moved aside naturally for her.

"Your Highness," she said softly in greeting.

Xu Chen looked at her for a moment before replying, "You look beautiful today."

The surrounding nobles froze slightly.

Because the Crown Prince rarely spoke unnecessary words.

And yet he had said that openly.

Yue Ning blinked once, clearly not expecting such directness in front of everyone.

Then a faint smile appeared on her lips.

"Thank you."

Yue Liang immediately looked away pretending not to hear anything while Yue Tao silently covered his mouth to stop himself from laughing.

Even Yue Ming's usually calm expression became slightly helpless.

Xu Chen, however, remained completely composed as if nothing unusual had happened.

The older officials nearby exchanged subtle glances.

The Crown Prince's attitude toward Yue Ning was no longer something hidden.

It was obvious.

Completely obvious.

The celebration continued afterward, music gradually filling the courtyard while servants carried food and wine between guests. Conversations resumed, though far more attention remained centered around Yue Ning and Xu Chen than before.

Wherever one stood—

The other was never far.

And under the warm spring sunlight, surrounded by the lively atmosphere of family and celebration, the Yue Mansion felt more alive than it had in years.

As if this fifteenth birthday did not simply mark Yue Ning's coming of age—

But the beginning of something even greater yet to come.
