Chapter 57 - Northern Border – War Camp

Hundreds of miles away, dark clouds gathered over the battlefield.

Outside the massive stone walls of Iron Ridge Fortress, the Xu Empire's army stretched across the plains like a vast ocean of banners and tents.

For nearly two months, the fortress had been under siege.

It was the final stronghold protecting the Northern Kingdom's heartland.

Inside the command tent, Xu Chen stood before a large wooden table covered with maps.

Generals surrounded him, their armor dusty from the battlefield.

"The western wall has already begun to weaken," one officer reported.

"If we continue the bombardment, it may collapse within ten days."

Another general frowned.

"But the enemy still refuses to surrender."

Xu Chen studied the map silently.

Iron Ridge Fortress was extremely well defended. The defenders were disciplined and their counterattacks were precise.

This was not the work of ordinary commanders.

Just then, a scout hurried into the tent and knelt.

"Report!"

"All forces of the Northern Kingdom's Third Army have begun moving south."

The tent fell silent.

One of the older generals immediately understood.

"They've finally sent him."

Xu Chen raised his eyes.

"Who?"

The general answered with a serious expression.

"General Han Zhen of the Northern Kingdom."

Several officers exchanged uneasy glances.

Han Zhen was one of the most famous commanders of the north.

For nearly twenty years he had defended the Northern Kingdom's borders and defeated many invading armies. His battlefield strategies were known to be ruthless and unpredictable.

If he arrived with reinforcements, the siege might be broken.

Another scout added quickly,

"Reports say he commands fifty thousand elite cavalry."

A murmur spread through the tent.

Fast cavalry would be extremely dangerous against a siege army spread across open plains.

If Han Zhen attacked suddenly, he could force the Xu army to retreat.

But Xu Chen remained calm.

He slowly rolled up the map.

"So… the Northern Kingdom has finally sent their best general."

The young crown prince walked toward the entrance of the tent and looked across the battlefield.

The massive walls of Iron Ridge Fortress stood silent in the distance.

The wind carried the smell of iron and smoke.

After a moment he spoke quietly.

"Good."

The generals looked surprised.

Xu Chen continued calmly,

"This war has lasted long enough."

"If we defeat him here, the Northern Kingdom will lose its last chance to resist."

His eyes were steady and sharp.

"Send scouts to track every movement of Han Zhen's army."

"Yes, Your Highness!"

The officers saluted.

As they left the tent to prepare, Xu Chen looked once more toward the northern mountains where the enemy army would soon appear.

But here on the battlefield, there was no time to think about birthdays.

Only victory—or defeat.

And soon, the greatest battle of the war would begin.

The cold winds of the northern plains swept across the endless battlefield as banners of the Xu Kingdom fluttered under the grey sky.

It had been eighteen months since the war began.

For a long time the war had been difficult. The Northern Kingdom's fortresses were strong, their cavalry swift, and their generals experienced. Yet the Xu army had steadily pushed forward under the command of the Crown Prince Xu Chen.

Now, the final obstacle stood before them.

A man feared across the northern territories.

General Han Zhen.

The Northern Kingdom had summoned him three months earlier when the war began to tilt in Xu's favor. Han Zhen was famous for his ruthless tactics and unmatched battlefield instincts. Many believed that if anyone could stop the Xu army, it was him.

And now, he stood across the battlefield from the young crown prince.

---

The First Clash

The battlefield stretched wide across the frozen plains.

On one side stood the disciplined army of Xu, their armor glinting under the pale sunlight. Thousands of soldiers waited in tight formation.

At the front of the army sat Xu Chen, mounted on a tall black warhorse.

Even after months of relentless battles, his presence remained calm and commanding.

Beside him stood his trusted generals.

One of them spoke quietly.

"Your Highness, Han Zhen has arrived."

Across the battlefield, the Northern army's formation shifted.

A massive cavalry force rode forward as a tall man in heavy armor appeared at the front.

General Han Zhen.

His sharp eyes studied the young prince in the distance.

"So this is the Xu Crown Prince…"

He had heard countless rumors about Xu Chen over the past year.

A young commander who led from the front lines.

A prince whose strategies had broken fortress after fortress.

But Han Zhen had fought wars for over thirty years.

He was not easily intimidated.

He raised his spear and shouted.

"Attack!"

The ground trembled as thousands of northern cavalry surged forward like a raging storm.

Xu Chen watched the charge calmly.

Then he raised his hand.

"Forward."

The Xu army advanced.

The two massive forces collided like crashing waves.

Steel clashed against steel.

War cries echoed across the plains.

The first clash between Xu Chen and Han Zhen had begun.

---

Three Months of Battle

The war against Han Zhen lasted three long months.

Unlike previous battles, the northern general refused to fight recklessly.

He used ambushes.

Night raids.

Sudden retreats that lured Xu forces into traps.

Several times the Xu army nearly lost ground.

But Xu Chen adapted quickly.

He changed his formations.

Reorganized supply routes.

And slowly tightened the siege around the Northern capital.

During one battle, Han Zhen personally led a cavalry strike aimed directly at Xu Chen's command position.

The attack was swift and brutal.

But Xu Chen had anticipated the move.

Hidden archers rained arrows upon the charging cavalry while Xu's infantry closed the trap.

The battle turned instantly.

Han Zhen barely escaped with his life.

After that day, the balance of the war began to shift.

The Xu army captured fortress after fortress.

Supply lines of the Northern Kingdom collapsed.

Their soldiers grew exhausted while Xu forces continued advancing.

Finally, after months of relentless pressure, the last battle arrived.

---

Snow began falling lightly the morning the final battle started.

The remaining Northern forces gathered outside their capital walls.

General Han Zhen stood at their front, his armor scarred from months of fighting.

Across the field, Xu Chen led the final assault.

The battle was fierce.

But by now the Northern army had lost too much.

Their soldiers were tired.

Their resources were depleted.

The Xu army surged forward with unstoppable momentum.

By afternoon, the Northern formation began collapsing.

Han Zhen fought desperately, rallying his remaining troops.

But it was too late.

The Xu army broke through their defenses.

The Northern capital gates fell before sunset.

The war was over.

After eighteen months of war, the Northern Kingdom had been conquered.

---

Celebration in the Army Camp

That night, the Xu army celebrated their victory.

Campfires lit the snowy plains as soldiers laughed and shouted in joy.

After so many months of hardship, they had finally won.

Large barrels of wine were opened.

Soldiers shared food and stories while singing victory songs.

At the center of the camp, the generals gathered around Xu Chen.

One of them raised a cup of wine.

"To His Highness, the Crown Prince!"

The others followed.

"To His Highness!"

Xu Chen accepted the cup calmly.

But instead of drinking immediately, he looked around at the soldiers celebrating across the camp.

"This victory belongs to all of you," he said.

"You endured the cold, the hunger, and endless battles."

He finally raised the cup.

"For the Xu Kingdom!"

"For the Xu Kingdom!"

The soldiers roared together.

The sound echoed across the silent northern plains.

---

The conquest of the Northern Kingdom changed everything.

With the northern territories now under Xu rule, the empire's borders expanded dramatically.

The Xu Kingdom had always been powerful.

But now it became something greater.

Its land stretched farther than ever before.

Its influence reached across vast regions.

For the first time in generations, Xu became the largest and most powerful kingdom in the world.

And the name of the young crown prince spread across every land.

A commander who conquered an entire kingdom before the age of twenty.

---

Preparing to Return Home

Three days after the final victory, the army began preparing for the journey back to the capital.

Soldiers packed their equipment and repaired supply wagons.

The banners of the Xu Kingdom were raised high above the captured city.

In the command tent, the generals gathered again.

One of them spoke with excitement.

"Your Highness, once we return, the entire capital will celebrate."

Another laughed.

"The empire has not seen a victory like this in decades."

Xu Chen listened quietly.

His thoughts drifted far from the battlefield.

Back to the capital.

Back to someone who had been writing him letters for the past year.

Yue Ning.

He remembered the small pouch she had given him before he left.

It still hung from his belt.

Through countless battles, he had never removed it.

Xu Chen stepped outside the tent.

The northern wind blew gently across the plains.

For the first time in eighteen months, the war was over.

He looked south.

Toward home.

"Prepare the army," he ordered calmly.

"We return to the capital."

Behind him, thousands of soldiers began organizing for the long march.

The victorious army of Xu would soon return.

And when the Crown Prince Xu Chen entered the capital again, he would no longer be only the heir to the throne.

He would return as the conqueror who expanded the empire itself.

But what he looked forward to most… was not the celebration.

It was seeing Yue Ning again after eighteen long months.
