Chapter 40 - The Secret Each Believed Was Theirs Alone

A silent understanding passed between them.

Not confession.

Not denial.

Above them, the lantern flames flickered, bending subtly as if acknowledging unseen forces.

Two supreme beings.

Neither willing to tear the veil.

And yet—

Neither able to look away.

The banquet thinned as the night deepened. Ministers drifted away in clusters, nobles whispered their final speculations, and lantern flames burned lower, softer.

Xu Chen stood near the carved jade railing overlooking the inner pond. His posture was relaxed, princely—but his thoughts were anything but.

She suspects.

No… more than suspects.

Her words beneath the plum tree had not been careless. They had weight. Depth. Awareness.

Yet she never said it.

She never named him.

And so he had remained silent.

If Yue Ning truly knew he was the Supreme Heavenly Dao, she would not have looked at him that way—calm, steady, unafraid. She would have shown distance. Reverence. Or resentment.

But she had shown none.

Which meant…

She does not know.

He exhaled slowly.

Good.

It must remain that way.

Across the courtyard, Yue Ning stood beneath a fading lantern while Fang Mei and Zhao Rong argued about whether princes were born arrogant or trained into it.

She smiled faintly at their nonsense, but her mind was elsewhere.

He hides it well.

Too well.

The boundless stillness within him… the restraint… the sense of watching all things without attachment.

There was no doubt in her heart.

Xu Chen was not merely Crown Prince.

He was the Supreme Heavenly Dao incarnate.

And yet—

He does not know that I know.

If he did, he would have tested me further.

He would have probed.

But he held back.

Which means he believes his secret is intact.

Her gaze lifted across the pond to where he stood.

And there was something else.

He does not know who I am.

That much was clear.

If he had recognized her fully as the Supreme Heavenly Empress, the balance between them would have shifted. The air would have tightened differently. His restraint would not be so measured—it would be aware.

But he was cautious.

Not certain.

Good.

The mortal world is not meant to carry our full truth.

Lian Hua approached her quietly. "You and His Highness speak as if the world rests on your shoulders."

Yue Ning chuckled softly. "It does not."

"Then why does it feel that way when you look at each other?"

Yue Ning's eyes softened. "Because we both carry responsibilities."

Lian Hua tilted her head. "Responsibilities beyond titles?"

Yue Ning did not answer.

Across the pond, Han Yu joined Xu Chen.

"You are distant tonight," Han Yu observed.

"I am thinking."

"That is never comforting," Han Yu replied dryly.

Xu Chen allowed a faint smile. "Tell me, Han Yu… do you believe some people are… more than they appear?"

Han Yu blinked. "You mean like you?"

"Not politically," Xu Chen said quietly.

Han Yu studied him carefully. "You speak as if you are measuring someone."

"Perhaps I am."

"And the verdict?"

Xu Chen's gaze drifted toward Yue Ning again.

"She is not ordinary."

Han Yu laughed lightly. "Of course she is not. She kept her composure when you were revealed as Crown Prince. Fang Mei nearly fainted."

"It was more than composure."

"Then what was it?"

Xu Chen's voice lowered.

"It was as if… she stands above revelation."

Han Yu frowned slightly. "You speak in riddles again."

Xu Chen fell silent.

He would not voice the thought forming in his mind.

That when Yue Ning looked at him, there was no awe.

No fear.

No surprise.

Only recognition.

Not of a prince.

Of something deeper.

Impossible.

If she were truly aware of his identity as the Supreme Heavenly Dao, the equilibrium of this incarnation would be disturbed.

He would feel it.

Wouldn't he?

Unless…

No.

He dismissed the thought.

Meanwhile, Yue Ning turned slightly as Li Wen approached.

"You are watching him," Li Wen said quietly.

"Observing," she corrected gently.

Li Wen hesitated. "Forgive me if I overstep… but when you stand near His Highness, the air feels… different."

Her eyes flickered briefly.

"You imagine it."

"Perhaps."

But Li Wen was not entirely convinced.

Yue Ning's thoughts returned inward.

If he knew I am the Supreme Heavenly Empress, he would not treat me with cautious curiosity.

He would test my will.

He would challenge my sovereignty.

But he does not.

Which means he remains unaware.

A small, almost imperceptible smile touched her lips.

For once, the Dao is uncertain.

The irony was delicate.

Beautiful.

Dangerous.

Xu Chen moved away from Han Yu and crossed the courtyard slowly.

Not directly to her.

Never directly.

But inevitably, they stood once more within quiet speaking distance.

"The night grows colder," he said.

"It does," she replied.

"You should return inside."

"Are you dismissing me, Your Highness?"

His eyes narrowed slightly at the formality.

"I am concerned."

"For my comfort?" she asked lightly.

"For your safety."

She studied him carefully.

"You believe danger surrounds you?"

"I know it does."

She tilted her head faintly.

"You carry more than a crown."

He stilled.

"And what do you believe I carry?" he asked calmly.

Yue Ning met his gaze.

Everything.

But she only said, "Expectation."

A pause.

He searched her face for hidden meaning.

Found none he could confirm.

"You speak as if you see beyond appearances," he murmured.

"Do you?" she returned.

He did not answer.

Because he was not certain.

Not of her.

Not of what lay beneath her mortal calm.

For the briefest instant, their eyes locked—and something immense brushed against something equally vast.

Like two oceans touching beneath ice.

Neither breaking the surface.

Neither revealing depth.

He stepped back first.

"You are perceptive," he said evenly.

"And you," she replied softly, "are careful."

Their conversation balanced on the edge of truth.

One step further—

And everything would unravel.

But neither moved.

Behind them, Zhao Rong called out, "Yue Ning! If you continue speaking privately with His Highness, rumors will begin!"

Fang Mei gasped dramatically. "Already beginning!"

Lian Hua swatted them both. "Have some dignity."

Xu Chen allowed the interruption.

It was safer.

"Yes," he said lightly, returning to princely composure. "Rumors are troublesome."

Yue Ning inclined her head. "Then we should avoid them."

"Yes," he agreed.

Avoid them.

Avoid truth.

Avoid confirmation.

As she walked back toward her friends, Xu Chen remained still.

She is extraordinary.

But she does not know.

And that is for the best.

Across the courtyard, Yue Ning felt his gaze on her back.

He suspects nothing.

And that too… is for the best.

Above the palace roof, the night sky stretched vast and indifferent.

The Supreme Heavenly Dao stood in mortal form, believing his secret untouched.

The Supreme Heavenly Empress stood in mortal grace, believing hers secure.

Neither aware that the other carried equal eternity.

Neither willing to test the veil.

And so the balance held.

Two infinite beings.

Each convinced their knowledge was solitary.

Each guarding truth alone.

While Heaven itself watched—

Amused,

Silent,

And patient.
