Chapter 29 - When Spring Ripened into Two Weddings

It was an ordinary spring banquet—at least, that was what Yue Ming believed when he agreed to attend.

"Just show your face," Yue Chen had said.

"You cannot refuse every invitation."

Yue Qiu walked beside his elder cousin, expression flat.

"If someone asks about marriage again," Yue Qiu muttered, "I will leave."

Yue Ming adjusted his sleeves calmly.

"You said that last time and you are 24 years old."

"And I meant it."

They entered the garden pavilion just as laughter drifted from the far side—light, unrestrained, and oddly sincere.

Yue Qiu paused.

"…That doesn't sound like officials."

Yue Ming followed his gaze.

Beneath a flowering crabapple tree stood two young women.

One wore pale blue, posture straight, expression serene. She was listening more than speaking, eyes clear and thoughtful.

The other wore soft pink, smiling as she spoke, her gestures lively, her voice bright.

The elder sister noticed them first and inclined her head politely.

"Gentlemen."

Yue Ming returned the bow.

"Lady."

Yue Qiu hesitated a heartbeat too long before bowing as well.

The younger sister smiled.

"You look like you were dragged here."

Yue Qiu blinked.

"…I was."

Yue Ming coughed lightly.

The elder sister smiled faintly.

"My sister speaks too freely. I am Shen Yao."

The younger grinned.

"Shen Li."

Yue Ming introduced himself properly.

"Yue Ming."

Yue Qiu followed.

"Yue Qiu."

Shen Li's eyes lit up.

"The Yue family?"

Yue Qiu nodded cautiously.

"So serious," she teased. "Are you always like this?"

"…Yes."

She laughed.

Shen Yao watched quietly, her gaze drifting to Yue Ming.

"You teach the princes," she said.

Yue Ming inclined his head.

"Yes."

"That must be exhausting."

"It is," he admitted. "But meaningful."

Their eyes met.

Neither spoke for a moment longer than necessary.

And yet—something settled.

Three Months of Quiet Change

They met again by coincidence.

Then again by courtesy.

Then, eventually, by expectation.

Yue Ming found himself listening more than speaking whenever Shen Yao was present.

"You don't interrupt," she observed once.

"I don't need to," he replied. "You finish your thoughts."

She smiled—small, genuine.

Meanwhile, Yue Qiu discovered that Shen Li was a relentless presence.

"You walk too fast," she complained one afternoon.

"Then walk faster."

"That's not the point!"

"What is?"

"That you should slow down for others sometimes."

He stopped.

"…Is that advice?"

She grinned.

"Yes."

He did not walk faster again.

Conversations that Changed Things

One evening, as lanterns were being lit, Yue Ming and Shen Yao sat apart from the crowd.

"Do you fear marriage?" she asked softly.

Yue Ming considered it.

"No. I fear neglect."

She nodded.

"So do I."

Elsewhere, Yue Qiu stood stiffly while Shen Li poked at a stone path with her shoe.

"If we married," she said casually, "you wouldn't ignore me, right?"

Yue Qiu stiffened.

"…That is not a question one asks lightly."

She looked up at him.

"Then answer seriously."

He met her gaze.

"I would protect you."

She smiled.

"That's better than flowers."

It was Yue Chen who laughed first when the proposal arrived.

"Both at once?" he asked.

Yue Ming bowed.

"It seemed appropriate."

Yue Qiu muttered,

"She would not wait."

Zhao Lan smiled warmly.

"Then neither should you."

In the inner courtyard, Yue Ning listened quietly as servants whispered excitedly.

"Two weddings!"

"Double joy!"

Yue Ning tilted her head.

"…Big Brother is getting married?"

Someone nodded eagerly.

She smiled—soft, knowing.

The Shen Family

The Shen residence stood on the eastern side of the capital—neither flamboyant nor modest, but dignified.

The head of the family, Shen Guanghe, held the rank of Left Assistant Minister of Rites.

He was known in court as a scholar-official with strict principles and a gentle temper.

Above him stood his father, Grandfather Shen Rong, a retired Grand Tutor of the Heir Apparent , once a towering figure in court politics, now living quietly after decades of service.

The Shen family did not seek alliances lightly.

Which was why, when Yue Ming and Yue Qiu first entered their garden pavilion, Shen Guanghe observed them carefully from afar.

"These are the Yue cousins?" he asked quietly.

Grandfather Shen smiled.

"Their steps are steady. Their eyes are upright. Good roots."

One evening, Shen Guanghe invited Yue Chen and Yue Jian for tea.

"My daughters," he said calmly, "are not ornaments."

Yue Jian replied without hesitation.

"The Yue family does not raise men who treat wives lightly."

Grandfather Shen tapped his cane.

"Words are wind. Conduct is proof."

Yue Ming bowed deeply.

"I will prove it with my life."

Yue Qiu followed, stiff but sincere.

"I will protect her."

Shen Guanghe closed his eyes briefly.

"…Then prepare the betrothal gifts."

The Wedding Day

Red silk covered two halls.

Drums echoed. Firecrackers thundered.

The Shen sisters were dressed side by side.

Shen Li whispered nervously,

"What if I trip?"

Shen Yao squeezed her hand.

"Then I will trip with you."

Elsewhere, Yue Qiu adjusted his crown.

"This is worse than battle," he muttered.

Yue Ming replied calmly,

"You cannot retreat."

"I know."

"Then walk forward."

Ceremony

As vows were exchanged, Yue Ning stood behind a pillar, unnoticed.

She clasped her hands.

Her voice was barely a breath.

May harmony dwell in your halls.

May loyalty outlast anger.

May love grow even in silence.

The air shimmered.

No one saw it.

Wedding Night

Shen Yao poured tea for Yue Ming.

"From today," she said softly, "we walk together."

He nodded.

"I will never walk ahead of you."

Shen Li tugged Yue Qiu's sleeve.

"Are you nervous?"

"…Yes."

She laughed.

"Good. So am I."

That night, Yue Ning sat on the roof, feet dangling.

Below, laughter echoed.

She smiled.

"No one noticed," she murmured.

The moon shone gently.

Destiny shifted—just a little.
