Chapter 8 - Chapter 8: The Door

Chapter 8: The Door

The book opened to the middle.

No one touched it.

The pages turned slowly on their own, stopping at a single symbol burned into yellowed paper.

Liam stared at it.

The moment he did, the pressure inside his head became unbearable.

He staggered backward.

"Liam!" Lara grabbed his arm.

The symbol seemed to move.

Not physically.

But somehow his mind couldn't hold its shape.

Every time he looked at it, it appeared different.

A circle.

A doorway.

An eye.

Something watching from very far away.

The machine's humming grew louder.

Across the observation glass, Dr. Vale smiled.

"Interesting," he said through the speaker.

"Liam, tell me what you see."

"I don't know," Liam whispered.

The room suddenly felt wrong.

Larger.

Deeper.

Like the walls had moved farther away.

The emergency lights flickered.

For a brief second, the lab disappeared.

Liam saw something else.

A hallway.

Infinite.

Black.

Filled with doors.

Thousands of them.

Each one different.

Each one waiting.

Then the vision vanished.

He nearly collapsed.

"What did you see?" Vale asked immediately.

Liam ignored him.

His eyes remained fixed on the book.

Words were appearing on the page.

New words.

As if invisible ink was surfacing from beneath the paper.

Lara saw them too.

"Oh my God..."

The text wasn't English.

It wasn't any language Liam recognized.

Yet somehow...

He understood it.

WELCOME BACK.

His blood ran cold.

"I've never been here before."

The words changed.

YOU HAVE.

The machine suddenly stopped humming.

Silence flooded the room.

Then every monitor in the laboratory switched on simultaneously.

Dozens of screens.

Every one displaying the same image.

A door.

Tall.

Black.

Featureless.

Standing alone in darkness.

Dr. Vale's calm expression finally cracked.

For the first time, Liam saw genuine fear.

"That's impossible," Vale whispered.

One of the figures behind him stepped away from the glass.

Another began speaking rapidly into a radio.

Something had gone wrong.

Something they hadn't expected.

The machine typed again.

THE DOOR REMEMBERS HIM.

Liam's pulse pounded in his ears.

"What door?"

No answer.

The screens flickered.

The image zoomed closer.

The black door now filled every monitor.

A symbol slowly appeared across its surface.

The same symbol from the book.

Then came a sound.

A knock.

Three slow impacts.

THUD.

THUD.

THUD.

Everyone froze.

The sound hadn't come from the speakers.

It had come from somewhere else.

Somewhere inside the building.

Another knock echoed.

Closer this time.

THUD.

THUD.

THUD.

Lara's face went pale.

"Tell me that's not real."

No one answered.

Vale was staring at a monitor.

His hands trembling.

The machine displayed another message.

IT FOUND THE PATH.

"What found the path?" Liam shouted.

The response appeared instantly.

THE FIRST WATCHER.

The lights flickered again.

For a fraction of a second, a figure appeared on every screen.

Tall.

Thin.

Standing directly in front of the black door.

Its face hidden.

Its eyes glowing white.

Then the image vanished.

Several monitors exploded.

Glass scattered across the lab floor.

Lara screamed.

The machine roared to life.

Not humming now.

Roaring.

Like engines waking beneath the earth.

Deep below the laboratory, something massive shifted.

The entire floor shook.

Dust rained from the ceiling.

Alarms erupted throughout the facility.

Dr. Vale slammed his hand against the speaker.

"Seal Sublevel Seven!"

A voice answered through static.

"We can't!"

"Why not?"

The reply came immediately.

And everyone heard it.

"Because the door is already open."

Silence followed.

Pure silence.

Then the book's pages turned one final time.

Stopping at a blank page.

Slowly...

A single sentence appeared.

Written in dark ink.

THEY ARE COMING FOR THE KEY.

Liam looked down at the words.

Then at the reflection in the page.

For just a moment...

The reflection wasn't his own.

Someone else was looking back.

And smiling.
