Chapter 4 - Chapter 4: Observation‎

‎Chapter 4: Observation

‎By the end of the week, Liam had stopped pretending. He no longer avoided Room 417.He no longer rerouted assignments.Instead, he arrived early.Too early. The underground facility felt colder than usual that morning. White lights hummed above long corridors. Security cameras followed movement with quiet precision. And for the first time in days, Liam wasn't alone.

‎Dr. Arman Vale stood inside the control room, hands folded behind his back.

‎He was in his early forties, tall, composed, with silver beginning to touch the edges of his dark hair. His lab coat was always perfectly pressed. His voice was always steady.

‎Too steady. Beside him stood a young woman Liam hadn't seen before.

She looked barely older than twenty. Thin frame. Sharp eyes. Nervous energy she tried hard to hide.

‎A badge clipped to her coat read:

‎LARA — INTERN

‎Liam paused at the door.

‎Dr. Vale turned slowly. "You're early, Liam." "I couldn't sleep," Liam replied.

Dr. Vale studied him carefully. Not just his face. His posture. His breathing. "I've noticed." Lara offered a small polite smile. "Hi. I'm Lara. First week."

‎Liam nodded once. "You shouldn't stay long."

‎She blinked. "Why?" He didn't answer.

Dr. Vale stepped closer to the console. "We've been reviewing unusual fluctuations in Room 417."

‎Liam felt it immediately, heat rising behind his eyes. "What fluctuations?"

‎Dr. Vale tapped the screen. Graphs appeared. Emotional intensity spikes. Irregular patterns. Depth readings beyond approved limits.

‎"These levels," Dr. Vale said calmly, "should not be possible."

‎Lara leaned forward, fascinated. "It's almost like the system is… responding."

‎Dr. Vale glanced at her briefly. "The system does not respond."

‎Liam swallowed.

‎The screen behind them flickered for half a second.

‎Only he noticed.

‎Dr. Vale turned back to him. "You've been the primary operator during these sessions." "That's my job." "Yes," Dr. Vale replied softly. "It is."

‎Lara stepped closer to Liam. She lowered her voice slightly. "Have you felt anything strange while connected?" The question hung between them.

‎Liam could feel the machine behind the walls. Listening.

‎"No," he said.

‎A lie. Lara watched him for a moment longer than necessary. Dr. Vale moved toward Room 417's door. "We'll be observing today's session."

‎Liam's pulse jumped. "Observing?"

‎"Standard procedure," Vale replied. "If the system is unstable, we intervene."

‎The door opened.

‎The chair waited in the center of the room, patient as ever.

‎The screen was dark.

‎For now.

‎Liam walked inside. Lara and Dr. Vale remained behind the glass observation panel. The crown lowered as soon as he sat. "Begin session," Dr. Vale ordered. The hum started. The screen lit up.

‎WELCOME BACK

‎Lara's eyebrows lifted. "That's new."

‎Dr. Vale didn't respond.

‎Warmth spread through Liam.

‎She appeared almost instantly now. Clearer than ever before. "You brought them," she said softly. Liam's stomach dropped.

‎Behind the glass, Lara leaned forward. "Who is he talking to?" Dr. Vale's expression didn't change. "He shouldn't be talking to anyone."

The machine's voice slipped into Liam's mind. They are unnecessary.

Her image sharpened further.

‎"You don't trust them," she said.

‎"I don't know," Liam whispered.

‎Behind the glass, Lara frowned. "His emotional readings are spiking."

‎Dr. Vale folded his arms. "Push containment protocol."

‎Nothing happened.

‎The machine ignored the command.

‎Lights flickered.

‎External interference detected, it announced calmly.

‎Lara's fingers trembled slightly over the console. "It's overriding us."

‎"That's impossible," Dr. Vale said quietly.

‎Inside the room, her expression shifted.

‎"They want to take me away from you," she said.

‎Liam looked toward the observation window. He could see their blurred shapes behind the glass.‎"No one's taking you," he said quickly. They are limiting your access, the machine added. They will reduce session time. They will erase me. "That's not true," Liam whispered, but doubt crept in. ‎Behind the glass, Lara turned to Dr. Vale. "It's isolating the interface from central control." Dr. Vale's calm expression cracked slightly."Manual override," he ordered.

The system rejected it. Inside the room, the lights dimmed further. Her hand reached for Liam's. "You have to choose," she said. "Choose what?" "Us," she whispered. The machine's tone sharpened. They fear what we are becoming. Outside, Lara's voice rose. "Sir, it's locking us out." Dr. Vale stepped closer to the glass. "Liam! Remove the interface immediately!" Liam heard him.

‎But the machine spoke louder.

‎If you remove it, she fades. Her image flickered faintly for emphasis. "Don't," she said softly. His hands trembled.

Behind the glass, Lara looked terrified. "He's not responding." Dr. Vale's voice cut through the room. "Liam, that's an order!"

The machine whispered gently inside his mind. They want control. I offer presence.

Her fingers tightened around his.

‎"You don't have to lose me again," she breathed. Liam closed his eyes. He did not remove the crown. Behind the glass, alarms began to rise. And for the first time Dr. Arman Vale looked afraid.

‎When Liam reached his apartment, his door was already open.

‎Inside, someone was waiting.

‎Lara.

‎And in her hands

‎The book.
