Chapter 159 - Chapter 159: The Man Between Wars

The interrogation room was quiet.

Not the cold, metallic kind of interrogation room people imagined from spy movies.

No glaring lights.

No chains.

No torture devices.

Just a simple table.

Two chairs.

And silence.

Bucky Barnes sat motionless in one of the chairs.

He looked exhausted.

Not physically.

Mentally.

Hydra's conditioning had been partially removed already.

The triggers.

The violent response loops.

The forced obedience programming.

Most of it had been dismantled carefully by Foundation specialists.

But the memories?

Those were harder.

Across from him sat Julius.

Or rather—

O5-2.

Sentinel.

His body remained obscured beneath living shadows.

One of his many anomalous abilities.

His face couldn't properly be perceived.

Every time Bucky tried focusing on it, his eyes instinctively slid away.

Like his brain refused to process what he was seeing.

"Hello, Mr. Barnes," Julius said calmly.

"It's been awhile."

Bucky stayed silent.

Watching him carefully.

"I believe you remember being brainwashed by Hydra and falling from the train during the war."

Julius folded his hands together.

"The war ended. Hydra recovered you shortly afterward."

"They turned you into a weapon."

Bucky's jaw tightened slightly.

Fragments.

Broken memories.

Blood.

Snow.

Screaming.

The sound of metal.

"And yes," Julius continued quietly, "you killed Howard Stark."

Bucky visibly flinched.

Pain crossed his face instantly.

Even if the memories were fragmented—

part of him remembered.

"It may be painful for you to remember everything," Julius continued. "So portions of your Hydra memories were temporarily suppressed after your capture."

A file slid across the table.

"I hope that's acceptable."

Bucky slowly picked up the folder.

Inside were photographs.

Mission reports.

Names.

Assassinations.

Hydra facilities.

Decades of bloodshed.

The Winter Soldier.

His hands trembled slightly while reading.

Not from fear.

From horror.

"You were used," Julius said calmly.

"Hydra broke your mind repeatedly until almost nothing remained."

Bucky stayed silent for several moments.

Then finally looked up.

"Who are you?"

The shadows around Julius shifted slightly.

"I am O5-2 of the O5 Council."

A pause.

"You probably don't know what that means."

Julius placed several classified Foundation files onto the table.

SCP designations.

Containment reports.

Reality-bending entities.

Ancient artifacts.

Impossible creatures.

"We are an organization that has protected mankind for thousands of years," Julius said.

"A secret one."

Bucky stared at the files.

At first with skepticism.

Then confusion.

Then growing disbelief.

"Is this stuff really real?"

Julius leaned back slightly.

"Well… you encountered the Tesseract, didn't you?"

That immediately shut down Bucky's argument.

"The universe is much larger than you think," Julius continued. "The Tesseract is not unique."

"There are countless anomalous entities, artifacts, dimensions, and threats humanity was never meant to see."

"And we are the people standing between humanity and extinction."

Bucky looked down at the files again.

One document showed a humanoid creature tearing through an armored containment squad.

Another described a reality restructuring event.

Another referenced extraterrestrial entities.

His worldview was collapsing for the second time in his life.

First Hydra.

Now this.

Finally, Bucky looked back up.

"So what do you want from me?"

Julius answered immediately.

"I want you to join the Foundation."

Bucky blinked.

"We can help you get revenge against Hydra," Julius continued calmly.

"And we believe Steve Rogers may still be alive."

That got a reaction instantly.

Bucky's eyes widened slightly.

"You found Steve?"

"Not yet," Julius said honestly. "But we are searching."

"Captain America's body was never recovered."

Hope.

Tiny.

Fragile.

But there.

Julius continued.

"You are highly skilled. Enhanced physically. Exceptionally effective in the field."

"You were a victim, Mr. Barnes."

"Not a willing monster."

Bucky stared quietly at the table.

After everything Hydra had done—

after decades of being turned into a weapon—

he didn't even know who he was anymore.

"What exactly would I be doing?"

"Protecting humanity," Julius answered.

"Same as us."

The irony of hearing that from another shadow organization clearly wasn't lost on Bucky.

But unlike Hydra—

these people hadn't tortured him.

They hadn't erased his mind.

They had stopped Hydra.

And honestly?

He had nowhere else to go.

No home.

No country.

No life left.

Just ghosts.

Bucky slowly closed the file.

"…Alright."

Julius tilted his head slightly.

"You're agreeing?"

Bucky nodded once.

"For now."

A pause.

"I'll work with you."

Julius extended a hand across the table.

"Welcome to the Foundation, Sergeant Barnes."

After a moment—

Bucky shook it.

Far away, deep beneath one of the Foundation's secure sites, Hydra agents were already being interrogated.

The Chaos Insurgency had begun infiltrating Hydra leadership worldwide.

One by one—

cells were disappearing.

Safehouses were being raided.

Scientists were vanishing.

Bank accounts were being seized.

Hydra didn't know it yet—

but they had just declared war on the wrong organization.

And unlike governments or intelligence agencies—

the Foundation didn't fight fair.
