Chapter 29 - Easy Caught Final

The first lights of dawn touched the horizon as the Aurora's Station approached the island. Its massive silhouette reflected in the calm waters, a stark contrast to the chaos that had reigned just hours before. Sand still clung to Nixxin's boots, the faint smell of smoke and wood lingering in the air, but the fight was over. For now.

The school guards landed on the shore, disciplined and uniformed, their presence a reminder of authority and order. They had come for all thirty students. Kael leaned slightly against a tree, shoulders stiff, muscles still trembling from exertion. The rest of the students moved quietly, some laughing, some still too shocked to speak. Relief and tension coexisted in the same space, an uneasy truce between exhaustion and the adrenaline that refused to fade.

Kael glanced at Nixxin. "They… they only come now? After everything?" His voice was low, cautious.

Nixxin shrugged. "Doesn't matter now. Focus on getting out." He helped Kael to the transport, supporting him as they boarded the vehicle that would carry them back to the city.

The ride was long, the hum of the engine filling the silence. Most students dozed off or stared blankly out the windows, but Kael kept his gaze fixed on the horizon. Nixxin noticed him watching, chest rising and falling unevenly, eyes heavy with thought. He didn't speak. He couldn't yet.

Kael finally broke the silence. "Do you think… the school even knew what we were up against?" His voice carried exhaustion and disbelief.

Nixxin didn't answer immediately, staring at the faint shimmer of morning light over the water. "Doesn't matter. They're here now. That's all that counts."

Kael frowned, shaking his head. "Still… feels weird. Waiting this long."

Nixxin remained silent. He knew Kael would press the point, but arguments didn't matter anymore. They were alive, and that was enough for now.

The city appeared on the horizon, skyscrapers gleaming under the rising sun. Nixxin's thoughts drifted to home. The skyscraper where his grandfather would be waiting, newspaper in hand, and Uncle Welp, casually eating bread as if nothing had happened.

Once they arrived, Nixxin's feet touched solid ground, the familiar weight of the city both comforting and grounding. The guards checked in, directing the students with efficiency, their voices crisp in the morning air. Nixxin walked alongside Kael, who still moved slowly, muscles protesting with every step.

The skyscraper loomed ahead. Inside, his grandfather glanced up from the newspaper, eyes sharp and calculating. "Everything alright?" he asked, voice low but firm.

Nixxin shook his head slightly, recounting the events with careful precision. "The island… the old man… the fights. Everything that happened."

His grandfather's eyes narrowed, jaw tightening. Anger was restrained but present. "The school waited too long," he said. "This is unacceptable. You faced dangers they couldn't even predict, and yet…" He shook his head, setting the newspaper aside.

Uncle Welp laughed from across the room, bread halfway to his mouth. "They still survived, old man. That's what counts, isn't it?"

Nixxin didn't respond. He just nodded, tired, letting the words linger. The fight was over, but the weight remained.

Later, in his room, Nixxin collapsed onto the bed. He pulled his phone close, seeing a message from Lira already waiting. Kael's page appeared next to hers. He opened the messages slowly, exhaling deeply.

Lira: "I… I can't stop thinking about everything. It's all still so… much."

Nixxin stared at the screen, thumb hovering. Carefully, he typed.

Nixxin: "I know. Me too. It won't just leave us overnight."

Lira: "I keep seeing Kael… and you. You were… so strong. I don't even know how to describe it. Scary, I guess, but also…" Her message paused. "Relieved."

Nixxin smiled faintly, exhausted. "Scary is fair. We were scared too. But relief… that's why we're here."

Kael chimed in shortly after.

Kael: "Yeah, relief. That's one way to put it. My arms still feel like bricks, but I guess alive counts."

Lira: "Kael! Stop making jokes about that. I—"

Kael: "Relax, Lira. Survived. Breathing. That's all that matters. Not dead. Not even close."

Nixxin typed, careful. "He's right. We're alive. That's the point. Nothing else matters tonight."

Lira: "I feel better hearing that. Still scared, but… better. You guys really are alive. Somehow."

Kael: "See? Fear's fine. Keeps you alive. Then we laugh about it later."

Nixxin: "Later doesn't mean now. Two seconds of silence, Kael."

Kael: "Fine, fine."

Nixxin leaned back into his pillows. He let the silence stretch, listening to the faint hum of the city outside. Relief was slow to settle, but it did, gradually. Lira's messages blinked quietly, full of lingering fear, but slowly, reassurance came between the words. Kael's simple, cocky honesty balanced it.

Nixxin: "We rest tonight. No thoughts about islands, old men, or fights. Just sleep. That's it."

Lira: "I'll try… but I'll sleep better knowing you're both here."

Kael: "Yeah. Me too."

Nixxin set the phone down on the nightstand. His eyes closed, muscles finally releasing some of the tension, chest easing slightly with each breath.
