Chapter 13 - - The Golden Boy

The arrival of Julian Thorne was the first thing that had truly disrupted the grey, suffocating tension of the week.

He didn't walk into the Great Hall; he occupied it. A year older than us, a transfer from a prestigious London academy that had supposedly become "too small for his ambitions," Julian was the kind of boy who looked like he had been designed by a committee of people who wanted to sell watches.

He was clinically handsome, symmetrical features, golden-brown hair, and eyes that were a disarmingly kind shade of hazel.

Unlike the Vanguards, who wore their privilege like a suit of armor, Julian wore his like a silk robe. He was witty, effortless, and within two hours of his arrival, he had managed to make Saffron Leith blush and the Headmistress smile.

I watched him from the periphery of the quad. He was surrounded by a cluster of Year 13s, laughing at something he'd said. He looked over, his gaze catching mine through the crowd.

He didn't look away. He didn't do the subtle, predatory squint of the other boys. He just smiled, a warm, genuine expression that felt entirely out of place in this cold, stone maze.

"Fascinating, isn't she?" Saffron's voice drifted over to him. I couldn't hear his reply, but the way he kept his eyes on me as she spoke made the hair on my arms stand up.

Alistair saw the new boy before he saw me.

I was standing by the lockers when they walked past. Alistair was giving the boy a brief tour of the history wing, his face fixed in that mask of responsible distance Diana had ordered him to wear. He looked older today. Greyer. He didn't even glance at me as they approached.

"And this is the archival annex," Alistair said, his voice a hollow drone. "Though students are generally discouraged from lingering here."

"A shame," Julian said. His voice was a rich, confident tenor. He stopped directly in front of me, forcing Alistair to halt as well. "The best stories are always in the places we're told not to go. Wouldn't you agree?"

He wasn't looking at Alistair. He was looking at me.

"I wouldn't know," I said, my voice flat. "I've been told the archives are empty."

I saw Alistair's jaw twitch, a tiny, microscopic sign of the war raging under his skin. He looked at Julian, then briefly, agonizingly, at me. The guilt in his eyes was so thick I could almost taste it.

"Julian Thorne, this is Elara Vance," Alistair said, the introduction sounding like a death sentence.

"Elara," Julian repeated, testing the name. He reached out and took my hand. He didn't shake it; he held it for a second too long, his thumb brushing my knuckles. His skin was warm. "I've heard interesting things. Mostly from people who seem terrified of you. That's usually a sign of a high IQ."

"Julian, we should move on to the Headmistress's lunch," Alistair interrupted, his tone sharper than usual.

"Of course, Mr. Howard," Julian said, releasing my hand with a wink that felt like a secret. "See you around, Elara. I have a feeling we're going to be very good friends."

They walked away, Alistair's pace hurried, almost frantic.

I stood there, my hand still tingling from Julian's touch. He was everything Alistair wasn't: young, free, and unafraid of the shadows. But I knew better than anyone that "kind eyes" in a place like St. Jude's were usually a mask for something much darker.

Julian Thorne wasn't a distraction.

He was a new player. And as I watched Alistair lead him toward Diana's office, I realized the game had just become much more complicated. Alistair had chosen his side, the side of silence and safety.

If he wanted to play the role of the distant teacher, fine. I would give him exactly what he wanted. I would let Julian Thorne into my world. I would let Alistair watch from his grey tower as I found someone else to burn this school down with.

The look of pure, unadulterated jealousy that had flashed in Alistair's eyes when Julian took my hand told me everything I needed to know.

The deal with Diana had given him his career back. But it was about to cost him his mind.
