Chapter 216 - Chapter 216: Met an Angel, Arranging the k-on! movie

After years of training, Lin Zhiyan had long since developed the mindset of not taking it to heart no matter how much the audience scolded him. Moreover, since "Your Lie in April" was so depressing, there were even more people scolding Takagi Makoto among the audience. Although Takagi Makoto was just his alter ego, as the saying goes: "The audience is scolding Takagi Makoto; what does that have to do with me, Lin Zhiyan?"

"The orthodoxy of 'depressing' animation lies in the collaboration between LSP and Fuji TV's noitaminA block." This sentiment was quite interesting to Lin Zhiyan, but he didn't go online to express any opinions.

While the audience was scolding or discussing, he was as busy as ever, including working on the review of the second season of "K-On!".

Just as "Your Lie in April" had finished, the final episode of the second season of "K-On!" was also nearing completion.

In the editing room.

Producer Lin Zhiyan, Director Naoko Yamada, and the director of the final episode sat together, watching the edited final product.

For this kind of school life animation, normally the protagonists' ages wouldn't increase, and they wouldn't graduate from school, but the anime "K-On!" was different.

For this kind of school-life genre anime, normally the main characters wouldn't age, and they wouldn't graduate from school, but "K-On!" is different.

The first season begins with the re-establishment of the Light Music Club. Ritsu Tainaka pulls in Mio Akiyama, and with the later addition of Yui Hirasawa and the wealthy Tsumugi Kotobuki, they successfully save the Light Music Club, which was slated to be disbanded. In the middle of the season, the main group moves from their first year to their second year of high school, and a new member, Azusa Nakano, joins.

Aside from that, the plot is basically just drinking tea and playing music.

The second season follows a similar plot, but the main group advances another year; Azusa Nakano enters her second year, while the others enter their third year. Although they try hard to recruit new members at the start of the new school year, no one joins.

Then, as the anime airs episode by episode, the timeline moves quickly. By the final few episodes, the four seniors take their entrance exams and are all successfully accepted into the same university.

The final episode is the graduation ceremony, the moment when the seniors must part ways with their underclassman.

Naturally, with parting comes goodbyes and the giving of gifts. As for the Light Music Club, the gift the four seniors give to their underclassman is a song they composed and performed together, titled "Tenshi ni Fureta yo!".

The music begins to play, and on the big screen, the four seniors of the group perform with their respective instruments in front of their only underclassman, Azusa Nakano:

"If we were to give a name to the fragments of our memories and keep them safe, it would be 'treasures'.

That's right, we spent such fulfilling, colorful days together."

"If the fragments of memory were to be given a name to preserve, it should be 'Treasure'.

Yes, spending every colorful day so fully.

Familiar school uniforms and slippers, and the graffiti on the whiteboard.

Must I leave them all behind at the entrance of tomorrow?

However, I met beautiful angels.

Graduation is not the end; we will continue to be friends..."

Listening to the song alone might not be that tear-jerking, but combined with the incredibly delicate visuals and the atmosphere of imminent separation right after the graduation ceremony, for viewers who have followed it episode by episode from the beginning, it's quite moving.

If it weren't the production staff, but ordinary viewers present, there would probably be some who would cry.

Having carefully reviewed all the content and confirmed that everything was in order, Lin Zhiyan had it sent for the V-Edit phase of post-production.

The V-Edit mainly involves adding production information onto the video. Lin Zhiyan didn't concern himself with this; it wouldn't be an issue anyway, and with the supervising director Naoko Yamada watching over it, there was no need for him to spend his time on it.

He left the matter to Naoko Yamada, left the editing room, returned to his office, and began working on the plan for the K-On! theatrical film.

With the graduation ceremony in episode 24, the main story of "K-On!" has concluded. There won't be a university arc, nor will there be a third season.

However, in the original version from the other timeline, there was a theatrical film, and that film was quite successful in both box office and critical reception.

Under these circumstances, the film obviously had to be made.

The film tells the story of the main cast going on a graduation trip to London before the graduation ceremony.

It's not just the third-year students; the only underclassman, Azusa Nakano, also joins them.

While in London, the group gets into various comical situations, including a misunderstanding that leads to them unexpectedly performing at a sushi restaurant, and later participating in a music festival where they perform their songs on stage.

It features the same style, the same joy, and the same emotional impact.

The second season of the anime consists of 24 main episodes, plus three extra episodes, one of which serves as a teaser for this theatrical film.

Although only about episode 24 of the second season has been completed so far, and the three extra episodes haven't been made yet—episode 23 hasn't even aired on TV—since the decision to make the film has already been finalized, there's no need to wait for those extra episodes to be completed before starting the planning. It's just as well to get the project planned early.

While working on the planning for the K-On! theatrical film, Lin Zhiyan was even pondering a question: once this film was completed, what animation should Naoko Yamada work on next?

Like Hiroyuki Imaishi, Naoko Yamada also belonged to the category of directors with their own unique style, meaning not just any animation was suitable for her.

Fortunately, although her style was also quite distinct, it was much more manageable than Hiroyuki Imaishi's personal style, and there were more animation projects that could be arranged for her.

The real question to consider was whether to let her continue along the path she took in the other timeline, assigning her the same animations she would go on to direct in that future, or to arrange different ones for her instead.

In the other timeline, the animations she directed after K-On! were Tamako Market, Tamako Love Story, A Silent Voice, Liz and the Blue Bird, and The Heike Story.

Among them, Liz and the Blue Bird is a theatrical film of Sound! Euphonium. To make this film, one would have to first make Sound! Euphonium, and that TV anime was adapted from a novel.

Although the novel hasn't been published yet, and while it could be made ahead of time, Lin Zhiyan couldn't possibly remember the original content. He only remembers the anime's first two seasons and two theatrical films, so the story isn't complete; therefore, it's better not to do it.

Even if it were to be done, it would be best to wait until the novel comes out, but it's uncertain whether he would be able to compete with Kyoto Animation for it by then.

"The Heike Story" is too niche an anime. Masaaki Yuasa's animation company, "Science SARU," often produces niche masterpieces, so it wouldn't be strange for Naoko Yamada to jump ship to Science SARU to make this anime after the Kyoto Animation arson attack. However, Naoko Yamada is currently at L.S Produ, which is Lin Zhiyan's company.

Lin Zhiyan's company wouldn't make such a niche anime.

As for the TV anime "Tamako Market" and its theatrical film "Tamako Love Story," they could be done, but their performance wasn't all that great.

That only leaves "A Silent Voice," but the problem is that the original manga for "A Silent Voice" already exists, and it hasn't finished yet—it won't finish until 2014. Under these circumstances, it's impossible to do, even if he wanted to.
