Chapter 7 - Chapter 7: The Reason

"What—so you're saying I already have a Blessing?"

The offhand information the fat orange cat had just let slip instantly wiped away Xien's resentment. He hurriedly pressed it, tense.

Wait—so even the gods are fighting over who gets to stamp someone first?

He was happy for about half a second… and then the thought hit him like a brick:

What if it was a god from the Evil Faction? Then I'd be completely screwed.

His heart jumped straight into his throat—until the tabby's next words erased his fear.

"Yes. Based on my monitoring of your surroundings, the deity who granted you a Blessing is this familia's patron god: Astraea."

The orange cat said it with eyes closed, brimming with confidence.

"So it's Astraea… That's fantastic. Is this really how my glorious life begins?"

Xien exhaled hard in relief. And suddenly, everything clicked—no wonder Ryuu had been so gentle with him.

Turns out he was already her "little familia brother."

Mm. Mm-hm. So this is what they call turning disaster into fortune.

He loved it.

"Alright then, useless orange-cat system—dismissed. Stop bothering my rise-to-power life."

Xien went slack against the headboard, already preparing to daydream about a beautiful future with Ryuu.

"How can you say that, meow?! The system I carry is very powerful, meow!"

The cat anxiously stomped onto his chest. It looked like a heavy lump of orange fluff… but oddly, Xien felt no weight at all.

If anything, the soft paw pads were… comfortable.

"Then what do you actually do?"

Xien asked casually—half mocking—curious what tricks this unreliable furball could possibly have left.

The moment he asked, the cat's face lit up. It was ready.

"As a Savior System dedicated to helping the host grow stronger, my core functions are threefold!"

First: "I can display all your data with precise quantification, so you can accurately grasp your body's condition."

A semi-transparent screen appeared in the center of Xien's vision—before he could even look closely, the cat barrelled on.

Second: "I collect the constructive intervention energy you create in the world, and use it for a shop where you can exchange it for power-enhancing items."

The interface switched to a dazzling storefront packed with products.

A quick glance showed three primary categories: Equipment, Items, and Skills.

Third: "After you gather enough intervention power, I can perform spatial transfer—sending you to the next world."

"Of course, there are also auxiliary features, like danger warnings, training guidance, and… companionship chat, meow."

"…That's it?"

"That's it!"

The orange cat stood with paws on its hips, proud as if its face said Praise me right now.

But Xien was a veteran web-novel reader. There was no way he'd be satisfied with that list.

"Pretty weak. You don't even have a sign-in system or quest system?"

"Extremely sorry, Host. On one hand, I'm a newbie among systems. On the other, this system exists to cultivate true strong beings across the heavens—not to manufacture giant man-babies who bring calamity to worlds."

"Your so-called 'log in and get a divine artifact' is—speaking in terms you'll understand—like stuffing a nuclear launch button into a child's hands. It's profoundly irresponsible, meow."

"As a high-quality system spirit who firmly upholds multiversal order, I absolutely will not let the Host grow crooked, meow."

"So please abandon fantasy and focus on solid, honest effort to become strong."

Then the cat's tone shifted, suddenly pointed.

"And besides—who says I'm useless? Host… don't you want to go back to your original world?"

Xien didn't expect to get lectured by a chubby, unreliable cat.

Worse—the cat had a point. He couldn't even refute it.

"…Fine, that's true. But weren't you the one who sent me here? I haven't settled the score for that yet."

Annoyance flared again. Xien reached out with both hands, trying to grab the cat—

—and the fat tabby dodged with baffling agility.

"No, no, Host! When I found you, you were already dead. To protect your soul from being affected by death, I spent a huge portion of my energy, meow!"

"Oh really? Sure. Like I'd believe that."

Xien grabbed again.

"You want proof? Your current body is the proof! To bring you back to life, my energy alone wasn't enough. I had no choice but to borrow some of your life force—that's why you're back in the body of a fifteen- or sixteen-year-old, meow."

The cat wasn't even mad—still dodging, still explaining.

"And it's all recorded. If you don't believe me, I can show you the logs."

"And don't worry about the life-force part—once you keep getting stronger, there will be ways to restore it, meow."

"…Oh. If that's true, then I guess I should thank you."

Xien stopped trying to catch it—partly because he was tired, and partly because the explanation actually sounded… plausible.

"Alright. Back to what you said earlier: you told me I was already dead when you found me. What happened?"

"Based on my observation and inference… you were hit by stray gunfire from an armed robber in a restroom next to you. There was a robbery in the women's restroom beside your stall. During the struggle the gun discharged—and by pure coincidence, you were shot in the head, meow."

"..."

Xien genuinely didn't know how to respond.

All he could feel was how catastrophically unlucky he was—this was how he ended up transmigrating?

"…Yeah. Foreign countries are terrifying. I'm never going again."

Then, quieter:

"Can I… really go back?"

After dying once, the cat's reminder hit differently. The place called home suddenly felt painfully dear.

A week ago, he would've sworn he'd never want to return.

Back then, home had been the place he desperately wanted to escape.

Now—

"Yes, Host. I've already anchored your hometown's spacetime coordinates. As long as you reach stellar-level and accumulate enough intervention energy, I can open the spacetime gate back to your home—returning you to the exact moment you disappeared. So you won't have to worry about things like 'everything changed' or 'people moved on,' meow."

The tabby wore that go on, praise me expression again.

"…When you put it that way, you actually do sound kind of useful."

"Alright. You're surprisingly easy to talk to. Are system spirits all like this now?"

Only now did Xien start to tentatively judge that this "system" didn't seem malicious.

If anything, it gave off a vibe of being… soft, and a little easy to bully.

"I'm not really sure, meow. But this personality was a blessing granted to us by our Great Creator. Every Orange-Tabby System is grateful, and fulfills its mission with sincerity."

The system spirit lowered its head and, without thinking, began kneading Xien's chest with its tiny paws.

The pressure was… weirdly perfect.

Comfortable, even.

"What mission?" Xien asked. "The one where you 'cultivate true strong people'?"
