Chapter 10 - The Bone River Awakens

The earth began to bleed.

Not metaphorically.

Not spiritually.

Literally.

Yuexin felt it first through his bare feet — a trembling pulse beneath the cracked battlefield soil, deep and rhythmic, like the heartbeat of something vast and starving.

The sky above the ruins of the Blackwood Gorge darkened though the sun still hung high. Cultivators from the Azure Gale Sect stood frozen, their robes snapping in sudden winds that came from nowhere.

Liang Jue's expression stiffened.

"That aura…" he whispered.

Yuexin didn't answer.

The Heavenly Map inside his dantian flared to life.

Golden lines spread across his inner vision, branching like rivers of light. But beneath the gold—

Black.

Something black was spreading through the Map.

A stain.

A corruption.

And it was not his.

Cracks spidered across the canyon floor.

From them seeped not magma—

—but bone.

Fragments at first.

White splinters.

Then entire skeletal arms clawing upward from below the earth.

A scream tore from one of the Azure Gale disciples as a skeletal hand wrapped around his ankle and dragged him into the soil as if it were water.

The ground swallowed him whole.

Silence followed.

Then the earth erupted.

The canyon collapsed inward, forming a spiraling abyss at its center. From that abyss rose a river—

A river made entirely of bones.

Skulls, femurs, ribcages, vertebrae.

Thousands.

No.

Millions.

They flowed like water, clattering and grinding against each other in a horrifying symphony.

And from within the bone river—

Something opened its eyes.

Two burning green flames flickered deep within the skeletal current.

The Heavenly Map burned inside Yuexin's chest.

Warning.

Ancient.

Primordial.

Hungry.

Liang Jue's voice cracked. "That's not a spirit beast…"

"No," Yuexin murmured.

He felt it clearly now.

This was not beast.

Not demon.

Not human.

It was something sealed long ago beneath this land.

And the seal had just broken.

The bone river rose higher, spiraling upward into a pillar of skeletal remains. Skulls fused together, forming a grotesque crown.

From the pillar emerged a figure.

Tall.

Humanoid.

But incomplete.

Its body was a framework of white bone threaded together with black sinew-like mist. No flesh. No skin. Only a ribcage that held a floating emerald flame where a heart should be.

Its head tilted slowly.

Empty sockets turned toward Yuexin.

Then it spoke.

"You…"

The voice was not sound.

It was thought.

It echoed inside every mind present.

"You carry the Map."

The disciples staggered.

Liang Jue fell to one knee.

Yuexin stood still.

The Heavenly Map pulsed once—

—and the golden lines expanded across his meridians.

"Yes," Yuexin said calmly.

The skeletal entity laughed.

The sound was like dry bones breaking.

"Then you are the key."

Suddenly—

The bone river surged.

Dozens of skeletal spears shot forward like arrows.

Yuexin moved.

Shadowstep.

His body blurred sideways, narrowly avoiding a spear that shattered the cliff behind him.

Liang Jue barely deflected another.

Two disciples weren't fast enough.

Their bodies were pierced and drained instantly, flesh withering as green flame devoured their life force.

The skeletal being extended one long finger toward Yuexin.

"Kneel," it commanded.

The pressure descended instantly.

Spiritual gravity multiplied.

The air itself thickened like iron.

Yuexin's knees bent—

—but did not touch the ground.

His veins flared gold.

The Heavenly Map roared inside him.

You are not prey.

The black corruption within the Map writhed, reacting violently to the creature's presence.

Recognition.

Old hatred.

Yuexin's eyes sharpened.

"You were sealed beneath this land," he said quietly. "By the Map."

The skeletal figure's emerald heart-flame flickered violently.

"You dare speak of that prison?"

The bone river exploded outward.

A tidal wave of skeletal remains rushed toward Yuexin.

He inhaled.

Circulated qi.

Activated the first glyph of the Heavenly Map.

Devouring Meridian.

The golden lines across his body ignited.

And as the bone wave crashed into him—

He did not retreat.

He devoured.

The impact should have shattered him.

Instead—

The bones dissolved upon contact with his aura.

Fragments disintegrated into streams of pale energy that spiraled into his dantian.

Yuexin felt it instantly.

Cold.

Ancient.

Dead.

But powerful.

His cultivation surged.

Late Qi Condensation—

—into peak.

Liang Jue stared in disbelief.

"He's absorbing it…"

The skeletal being's flame flared brighter.

"Impossible."

Yuexin stepped forward through the torrent.

Each step devoured more bone.

More death essence.

The Heavenly Map expanded.

New lines appeared.

New pathways unlocked.

But with each devoured fragment—

The black corruption inside the Map grew slightly stronger.

He felt it.

A whisper beneath the golden radiance.

Hungry.

Different from the skeletal being.

But connected.

The entity raised both arms.

The bone river halted.

Then reversed direction.

All skeletal remains surged back toward it, compressing, fusing, forming armor around its body.

Its size doubled.

Then tripled.

A towering skeletal warlord now stood at the center of the abyss.

A massive bone blade formed in its grip.

"You are not worthy of the Map," it said coldly.

Then it moved.

It vanished from sight.

Yuexin barely sensed it in time.

He raised his arm—

The bone blade crashed into his forearm, and the impact blasted him through three layers of shattered rock.

Blood sprayed.

His arm trembled.

The Map flickered.

That strike—

That wasn't Qi Condensation.

That was Foundation Establishment power.

At least mid-stage.

Yuexin coughed, rising from the rubble.

Good.

Finally.

A real opponent.

The skeletal warlord appeared above him and brought the blade down again.

Yuexin rolled aside.

The earth split in two.

He activated Shadowstep again, reappearing behind the creature.

Palm strike.

Golden qi exploded into its spine.

The bones cracked—

—but instantly reformed.

Regeneration.

Of course.

The entity turned with unnatural speed and backhanded him.

Yuexin crashed into the canyon wall again, coughing blood.

Liang Jue shouted, "We must retreat!"

"No," Yuexin said hoarsely.

His eyes burned now.

The Heavenly Map pulsed violently.

A second glyph shimmered faintly.

Unstable.

Unfinished.

Forbidden.

Devour the source.

He understood.

Not the bones.

Not the constructs.

The flame.

The emerald flame inside its ribcage.

That was its core.

But to reach it—

He would need to get close.

Very close.

The skeletal warlord raised its blade again.

Green fire began spreading across the bone weapon.

The air rotted where it passed.

One strike.

If that landed cleanly—

He would die.

Yuexin wiped blood from his mouth.

And smiled.

"Good."

The Heavenly Map blazed.

Black and gold light intertwined for the first time.

The corruption answered his call.

Not fully.

Not willingly.

But enough.

His aura shifted.

The ground beneath him blackened.

Even the skeletal warlord paused.

"You…" it hissed.

Yuexin lowered his stance.

This was dangerous.

He could feel the black energy trying to take more than he intended.

But if he hesitated—

He would lose.

The blade descended.

Yuexin did not dodge.

He stepped forward into it.

The bone blade pierced his shoulder.

Agony exploded through his body.

But his hands—

Locked around the skeletal warlord's ribcage.

And the Heavenly Map roared.
