Chapter 6 - The Man in the Shadows

Jude and Daniel were hiding in a small, cheap motel room. The place smelled old and dirty, and the air was heavy. A single light bulb hung from the ceiling over the bed, making the room look even sadder. Outside, cars drove by on the wet road, and a dog kept barking somewhere nearby.

Jude sat on the edge of the bed. He leaned forward, his elbows resting on his knees, and held his hands together so tightly his knuckles were white. He hadn't said anything for a long time.

Daniel stood by the door with his arms crossed. He watched Jude closely. Daniel had seen Jude angry, drunk, or even heartbroken before. But he had never seen him so quiet and lost.

Jude looked different now. Not just tired he looked like someone was chasing him.

He had a bandage on his cheek from a cut he got while running away. He wasn't wearing his tuxedo anymore. Instead, he had on old jeans, a brown jacket that didn't fit well, and a dark cap pulled low over his eyes. Daniel had told him to wear these clothes to hide his face.

"You can't look like yourself," Daniel had said. "Too many people saw you tonight."

Jude had just nodded. He didn't argue or say anything.

He stared at the dirty carpet and tried to control his breathing. It looked like he was trying to put his thoughts in order.

At last, Jude spoke. "This wasn't random."

Daniel stood up straighter. "I know."

Jude shook his head slowly. "No. I mean, none of it. The watch, the handbag left in my house, the police coming at the exact time, the accusations… It all happened too perfectly."

Daniel was quiet for a moment. Then he asked, "You think someone planned it?"

Jude looked up. There was a new calm in his eyes, like he was finally starting to understand what had happened.

"Yes," Jude said. The word hung in the air.

Daniel walked across the room. "Then we need to think about motive. Who would want to ruin your life on your wedding day?"

Jude's jaw was tight. "My life is destroyed. My name is ruined. My business is finished. My fiancée is humiliated." He stopped, unable to say more.

Daniel waited quietly. Jude started thinking aloud.

He looked at the ceiling and said, "Who hates me enough to do all this?"

Daniel waited for him to keep going.

Jude started counting on his fingers. "One, someone planted the watch on me. Two, someone put her handbag in my house. Three, the police were called, not just by chance, but certain about what they would find. Four, whoever did this knew about my wedding, my house, my routine."

Daniel nodded. "So it wasn't random. It's someone close to you, or at least someone watching you closely."

Jude's eyes narrowed. "Maybe it's someone from business."

The idea seemed to shock both of them. For a moment, the room felt even smaller.

Daniel asked, "You think it's someone at work?"

Jude didn't answer right away. But then he remembered something.

Daniel noticed. "What is it?"

Jude sat up straighter. "The club. My bachelor night."

Daniel nodded. "You mean the night before the wedding?"

"Yes." Jude closed his eyes, thinking hard. "I saw someone there. He wasn't with us. He was near the VIP section."

Daniel asked, "Do you know who it was?"

After a moment, Jude's face changed. He remembered.

"Yes," Jude said.

Daniel came closer. "Who?"

Jude looked Daniel in the eyes. "Victor Kareem."

Daniel was surprised. "Your old business partner?"

Jude nodded. "The deal that failed last year."

Daniel whistled quietly. "That was bad. Victor lost a lot of money, and you came out on top."

Jude nodded. "He blamed me. He said I ruined him."

Daniel asked, "Did you?"

"I outsmarted him," Jude said. "In business, that's the same as destroying someone."

The room felt heavy again.

Daniel said, "So Victor has a reason to hate you."

Jude nodded.

Daniel continued, "He knows your house, your business, your wedding date. And you saw him at the club."

Jude said, "He has money, power, and friends who would help him. He could set all of this up."

Daniel added, "If he wanted to hurt you, he would do it in public, not private."

Jude agreed. "That's true."

Daniel said, "Then we need to find out what Victor did. We need to investigate him."

Jude nodded. "Check where he was that night. See who he talked to. See if he knew the victim or her family."

Daniel smiled a little. "Now you sound like yourself again."

Jude didn't smile back. "If I don't clear my name, my life is over."

Daniel's face became serious. "Then let's clear your name."

They started planning. Daniel took out his phone and wrote things down.

"Victor's office is on Victoria Island. His house is in Ikoyi. He travels a lot," Daniel said.

Jude said, "First, let's make sure he was at the club."

Daniel nodded. "We'll talk to the staff, check the cameras, and look at security logs."

Jude added, "Then check if he had any connection to the victim or her sister."

Daniel looked up. "And you?"

Jude pulled his cap lower. "I need to stay hidden."

Daniel looked at him for a moment. Jude didn't look like the man he used to know. He looked tired and scared.

"Yeah," Daniel said quietly. "You do."

Across the city, Cassandra, Jude's fiancée, sat on the floor of her bedroom. The room was still decorated for their wedding, but now it looked sad. Her wedding dress hung on the wardrobe door. Her veil was on the floor beside her. The air smelled faintly of roses and hairspray.

Cassandra's makeup had run down her cheeks, but she didn't wipe it away. "I don't understand," she whispered.

Her friend Kemi, the chief bridesmaid, sat beside her and put an arm around her shoulders.

"It could be a mistake," Kemi said softly.

Cassandra shook her head and cried. "They handcuffed him, Kemi."

Kemi tried to comfort her. "Police can be wrong."

Cassandra looked at her dress. "He looked at me like he didn't even know what was happening."

Kemi spoke gently. "Cassandra…"

Cassandra sobbed, "He would never hurt anyone. Never."

The room was silent for a moment.

Kemi said, "You know him best."

Cassandra nodded, but she felt doubt growing inside her. "This feels like a nightmare," she said, pressing her hands to her face.

Kemi hugged her. "It will make sense."

Cassandra shook her head. "Our wedding was supposed to be tomorrow."

Kemi closed her eyes. "I'm so sorry."

Cassandra whispered, "What if everything I believed is wrong?"

Kemi didn't know what to say.

Back in the motel, Jude and Daniel stood over a map Daniel had drawn on hotel paper.

"Victor's office," Daniel said, pointing. "The club. His house."

Jude looked at the map. "If he did this, we'll find clues."

Daniel said, "Money, phone calls, people he hired."

Jude nodded, his voice hard. "We'll find them."

Daniel asked, "And when we do?"

Jude looked at Daniel. "We show everyone the truth."

Outside, a car rushed past in the rain.

Daniel folded the map. "We'll start tomorrow."

Jude pulled his cap down, hiding his face. "Yes," he said. "We'll start."
