Chapter 16 - : Where the Evening Deepens

Evening settled fully over the Realm of Goddesses, but the terrace remained bathed in a soft, living glow. The river of light below flowed like molten starlight, casting gentle reflections upward that danced across the floating platform.

No one moved for several seconds.

Selene's arrival had changed the air.

Not with pressure.

Not with threat.

But with a quiet gravity that made every heartbeat feel just a little more noticeable.

Arin shifted his weight slightly, aware—very aware—that three goddesses were now focused on him in very different ways.

Yeah, he thought dryly. This is normal. Completely normal.

Selene stepped forward first, her movements smooth and unhurried. Unlike Lyria's sharp precision or Lyraelle's warm steadiness, Selene moved like the moment between day and night—soft, inevitable, impossible to ignore.

"You've grown comfortable here quickly," she said gently, her twilight-blue eyes studying Arin with open curiosity.

Arin gave a small, self-aware smile. "I think the Realm just keeps throwing new surprises at me."

Her lips curved faintly.

"It tends to do that… when it's interested."

Lyria's gaze sharpened slightly at those words.

Lyraelle, however, remained calm—though her fingers had not moved far from Arin's hand.

Selene noticed.

Of course she did.

Her expression didn't change, but something thoughtful flickered behind her eyes.

"How does it feel?" she asked Arin quietly.

He blinked. "How does what feel?"

"Being watched by a world that rarely notices anyone."

The question was soft.

But it landed with surprising weight.

Arin exhaled slowly, glancing briefly toward the glowing horizon.

"…Honestly?" he said.

Selene nodded once.

"It's less scary than being invisible," he admitted.

The answer hung in the air.

Lyraelle's expression softened immediately.

Lyria's posture eased—just a fraction.

Selene's gaze deepened, interest clearly piqued.

"…You continue to say unexpected things," she murmured.

Arin scratched the back of his neck. "I'm starting to think that's my only talent here."

"Not your only one," Lyraelle said gently.

Her voice carried quiet certainty.

Selene's eyes flicked briefly toward her.

Then back to Arin.

"Yes," Selene agreed softly. "Definitely not your only one."

For a brief moment, Arin had the strange feeling he had just become the center of a very complicated conversation he didn't fully understand.

The floating lanterns drifted lower as the evening deepened, casting warmer pools of light across the terrace. The atmosphere had shifted again—less tense than before, but more charged.

Selene moved to the edge of the platform, looking out over the river of light below.

"This place is rarely used at this hour," she said casually. "Lyraelle always preferred quieter moments."

Lyraelle stepped beside her, calm but attentive. "And you always preferred observing from a distance."

Selene smiled faintly. "Observation reveals truths that presence sometimes disturbs."

Lyria, standing slightly behind Arin, crossed her arms loosely.

"…You didn't come here just to observe," she said.

Selene turned her head slightly.

"No," she admitted.

Her gaze returned to Arin.

"I came because the Realm keeps… leaning toward you."

Silence followed.

Not awkward.

But heavy with meaning.

Arin shifted slightly. "I feel like I should apologize to the Realm at this point."

Lyraelle laughed softly.

Even Lyria's lips twitched—barely.

Selene, however, stepped closer.

Close enough that Arin could see faint star-like flecks in her twilight eyes.

"You misunderstand," she said gently.

Her voice dropped just slightly softer.

"It isn't resisting you."

Her hand lifted slowly.

Paused.

Then rested lightly against the air near his shoulder—not quite touching yet.

"It's welcoming you."

The moment stretched.

Arin's heartbeat picked up—just a little.

The thread in his chest responded again, warmer than before.

Selene's breath stilled faintly.

"…There it is," she whispered.

Lyria noticed immediately.

Her eyes narrowed slightly.

Lyraelle stepped half a pace closer without thinking.

The air between the four of them subtly tightened.

Arin cleared his throat softly. "Okay, I'm definitely missing context again."

Selene blinked once—then softly laughed.

The sound was low and unexpectedly warm.

"You're doing remarkably well for someone at the center of divine attention," she said.

"That is not reassuring," Arin replied.

Lyraelle's fingers lightly brushed his wrist again—steadying.

Selene noticed that too.

Her expression didn't harden.

But it did grow more thoughtful.

The wind shifted gently across the terrace, carrying soft warmth from the river below. The lanterns drifted lower still, casting the space in a more intimate glow.

Lyria finally stepped forward fully, her presence more direct now.

"If you're staying," she said to Selene, "then stop circling the situation and speak plainly."

Selene's gaze slid toward her.

Calm.

Unruffled.

"You've always preferred direct approaches."

"And you haven't answered."

Selene was quiet for a moment.

Then she turned back to Arin.

"I wanted to see him myself," she said simply.

No dramatic pause.

No hidden meaning.

Just honesty.

That, more than anything, made the air shift again.

Lyraelle studied Selene carefully.

Lyria's posture remained guarded.

Arin just looked mildly overwhelmed.

"…I feel like I should charge admission at this point," he muttered.

Selene's soft laughter returned.

"You adapt quickly," she said.

"Survival instinct," he replied.

Something in that answer made her eyes soften.

Time passed slowly on the terrace.

Conversation came easier than before—surprisingly so. What Arin had expected to be tense or overwhelming instead settled into something almost… natural.

Lyraelle spoke gently about the western currents and how the Realm responded to emotional resonance.

Lyria occasionally corrected Arin's posture when he leaned too casually against the railing.

Selene listened more than she spoke.

But every time her gaze returned to Arin…

It lingered just a little longer.

Eventually, the lanterns dimmed slightly—signaling the deeper shift into night-cycle.

Lyraelle noticed first.

"It's getting late," she said softly.

Lyria nodded once.

Selene, however, remained where she was.

Watching Arin.

He noticed.

"…What?" he asked carefully.

Selene tilted her head slightly.

"You really don't feel it yet, do you?"

"Feel what?" he asked.

Her gaze softened.

"The Realm is already adjusting around you."

Arin went still.

The thread in his chest pulsed—stronger than before.

Not wild.

Not unstable.

But growing.

Lyraelle's eyes widened slightly.

Lyria's expression sharpened.

Because they felt it too.

Selene stepped closer one final step.

Not invading.

Not claiming.

Just close enough that her voice dropped softer.

"You're going to change more than you realize, Arin."

The way she said his name—

Gentle.

Certain.

—sent a quiet warmth through his chest.

For a moment, none of them spoke.

The evening air wrapped around the terrace like a held breath.

And somewhere deep within the Realm of Goddesses…

Ancient currents shifted again.

High above, unseen by the four below—

Aelira watched the threads tightening.

Her soft smile returned.

"…The evening has finally noticed him," she whispered.
