Chapter 10 - CH 10 - Trial by Fire

Astraeus returned to the Copper Bell Inn, his mind reeling. He had walked into the guild hall expecting to be exposed as a liar and thrown out on the street. Instead, he had walked out as an official Initiate, with a second chance he hadn't dared to hope for. He'd navigated a minefield of questions, spun a new lie from the ashes of the old one, and somehow, they had bought it.

He collapsed onto the bed in his room, the pouch of twenty silver coins a heavy, solid weight on the nightstand. He had done it. He had survived.

That was… impressive, Kha'Zul admitted, his mental voice tinged with something that sounded almost like surprise. You took a situation with no good outcomes and created one. Your talent for deception is growing almost as fast as your magical ability.

"It wasn't all a lie," Astraeus said quietly. "The shame was real. The fear was real."

I know. That's what made it believable. You are a surprisingly good liar, Astraeus Ren.

As if on cue, the God System chimed in, its interface appearing in his vision.

Astraeus stared at the notifications, a slow smile spreading across his face. He'd not only survived the social encounter, he'd been rewarded for it. The skill book was exactly what he needed. He'd proven he could handle a single threat, but he lacked the formal training to fight alongside other mages.

He spent the evening reading the skill book—or rather, absorbing its contents as the knowledge flowed directly into his mind. It covered fundamental fighting forms, footwork, essence management in a duel, and tactical awareness for magical combat. It was the foundation he'd been missing.

He allocated his new attribute points to Intelligence, further expanding his essence pool. Power was important, but the ability to sustain that power in a prolonged fight was even more so.

Astraeus woke before dawn, his body still aching but his mind sharp with anticipation. He left the inn while the city was still dark and made his way to the guild hall. The training yard was a large open space behind the main building, and six other mages were already there, stretching and preparing.

Marcus stood near the center of the yard. "Good. You're early. I like that." He called the others over. "Everyone, this is Astraeus Ren, newly registered Initiate. He's here on my recommendation. I expect you all to treat him as an equal."

A young man with sandy hair and Journeyman robes smirked. "An Initiate in advanced combat training? This should be interesting."

"It will be, Garrett," Marcus said mildly. "Especially when he demonstrates the dimensional sealing technique he used to stop a Voidborn incursion yesterday."

That got their attention. The skepticism in their expressions shifted to interest. A woman with dark skin and Apprentice robes stepped forward. "Lyra Venn. If you actually sealed a Voidborn portal, I'm impressed."

Astraeus shook her hand. "I had help. And luck."

After brief introductions to the rest of the group—Darius, Kira, Elena, and Thomas—Marcus laid out the day's plan. "Today's focus is combat adaptation. You'll be working in pairs. The goal isn't to win, but to learn." He gestured to the marked circles on the ground. "First pairing: Astraeus and Garrett. Let's see what our new Initiate can do."

Of course he'd pair you with the skeptical nephew first, Kha'Zul said dryly. This is a test.

Astraeus and Garrett moved to opposite sides of a circle. Garrett rolled his shoulders, essence already gathering around his hands in flickering orange flames. "Don't take this personally, Initiate," Garrett said. "But I need to see if you're actually worth my uncle's faith."

"I understand," Astraeus said calmly. "Come at me whenever you're ready."

Marcus raised his hand. "Begin!"

Garrett attacked immediately, launching three fireballs in rapid succession. It was a standard, aggressive opening. Instead of raising a barrier, Astraeus sidestepped, his footwork smooth and efficient thanks to the new skill book. The fireballs scorched the ground where he'd been standing. He gathered essence as he moved, shaping it into a single concentrated sphere of light.

Garrett launched another volley, but Astraeus was already moving forward, closing the distance. He released his sphere not as an attack but as a flash of brilliant light, temporarily blinding Garrett.

Good, Kha'Zul approved. Use his aggression against him.

Astraeus was inside Garrett's guard before the Journeyman could recover, one hand pressed against his chest, essence gathered and ready to release.

"Yield," Astraeus said quietly.

Garrett blinked away the afterimages, realized his position, and stepped back with a rueful grin. "Yield. Well played."

The watching mages murmured among themselves. Marcus nodded, making notes in his book. "Good adaptation, Astraeus. You recognized Garrett's pattern and exploited it."

The training continued, pairings rotating every ten minutes. Astraeus fought each of them in turn, learning their patterns, adapting his approach. He fought Lyra's earth magic, Darius's experienced defense, Kira's enthusiastic offense, and Elena's precise ice spells. His final match was against Thomas, the serious Journeyman who fought with cold, calculating efficiency. That match ended in a draw, both of them depleted of essence and unable to continue.

"Well fought," Thomas said, offering his hand, his expression one of genuine respect. "You're better than your rank suggests."

By the time the rotation was complete, the sun was fully risen, and all seven of them were exhausted. Marcus called them together. "Good work, all of you. Astraeus, you've proven you belong here. Your essence control is excellent, your tactical thinking is sound." He paused. "But you're also holding back. I can see it. Why?"

"Because this was about learning, not winning," Astraeus said. "Holding back forces me to be more creative."

Marcus smiled. "A wise answer. But remember: in real combat, there's no reward for holding back. Dismissed."

The group dispersed. Lyra fell into step beside Astraeus. "That was impressive. Some of us are going to the Copper Bell for breakfast. Want to join us?"

Astraeus, surprised and pleased by the invitation, readily agreed. It was the first time since his resurrection that he felt like he might actually belong somewhere.

They sat at a large table in the corner of the common room, the seven of them, eating and talking and laughing. They talked about magic, about the guild, about their hopes and dreams. They were a disparate group, from different backgrounds and with different specialties, but they were united by a shared passion for magic and a shared desire to make a difference in the world.

Astraeus, for the first time in a long time, felt like he was part of something. He was no longer just a boy with a dark secret, a boy on the run from his past. He was a mage, a member of a guild, a part of a team.

He was home.
