War did not resume.

It recalculated.

The battlefield emptied by dusk, but tension did not retreat with the soldiers. It settled into the cracks Elara had forced open—into fractured stone, into wounded pride, into the silent space between Draven and the crown he had chosen to endanger.

The river still ran wider than it had that morning.

It would not return to its former shape.

Neither would they.

Elara stood at the broken crossing long after the last banner disappeared beyond the ridge. The deeper current beneath her skin pulsed steadily—no longer wild, no longer draining her through blood. It felt… anchored, but not to a bond.

Anchored to balance.

Draven approached without armor now.

He had dismissed his guard.

That alone would be whispered about for months.

"You've made enemies of every council house," he said quietly, stopping a careful distance away.

"They were already afraid of me," she replied.

"They are not afraid." His jaw tightened. "They are threatened."
