Chapter 13 - Iron Body

Elara descended further into the Crypt of the Devoured.

The black marble corridors had grown colder, narrower, the green torchlight dimmer.

The air was thick with the scent of mildew, bone dust, and the faint metallic tang of blood that never quite dried. Every step echoed louder than it should have.

The first floor beyond the goblin chamber was a long, straight hallway lined with alcoves. Each one held a skeleton warrior human-sized, bones polished to an ivory sheen, rusted swords clutched in bony fingers. They moved as she passed the threshold.

Twenty of them.

They moved with eerie silence—no battle cries, no clattering—just the soft click of bone on stone as they advanced in perfect unison.

Elara cracked her knuckles.

The first skeleton lunged—sword raised high. She sidestepped, grabbed its wrist, twisted until the bone snapped, then drove her fist through its ribcage. The skeleton exploded into shards of ivory that rained down like glass.

The others swarmed.

She fought like a storm.

Fists hammered skulls, elbows shattered spines, knees cracked femurs. Bones flew in every direction—clattering, splintering. One skeleton managed to slash her forearm with its blade; blood welled up, but she ignored it, grabbed the creature by the spine and swung it like a club, smashing three more into dust.

When the last skeleton fell its skull was crushed beneath her boot, elara stood breathing hard, blood dripping from her knuckles, but the cuts started to close thanks to the faint healing aura from Seraphine's devotion link.

A chime rang in her mind.

Elara flexed her hand. The skin rippled briefly—turning a dull, metallic gray—then returned to normal.

Useful.

She kept going.

The next floor was worse.

Grotesque male undead—rotting flesh hanging from muscle, eyes milky, cocks still disturbingly erect and leaking black ichor—shambled out of shadowed side tunnels. They were taller than humans, arms corded with unnatural strength, mouths gaping in silent howls.

Fifteen of them.

They rushed her in a wave.

Elara activated Iron Body for the first time.

Her skin hardened instantly—dark obsidian turning to gleaming steel-gray. The first undead's claw raked across her chest; sparks flew, but the skin didn't break. She grabbed its arm, twisted, ripped it off at the shoulder, then used the severed limb to cave in the next one's skull.

She fought like a living siege engine.

Fists crushed ribcages. Elbows shattered jaws. She grabbed one by the throat, lifted it overhead, and slammed it down so hard the marble cracked beneath it. Another tried to bite her shoulder—she drove her fist through its mouth, out the back of its skull, and flung the corpse aside.

Then the last one fell—neck snapped, body twitching—Elara stood in the center of the carnage, breathing steady, Iron Body fading back to normal skin.

Another chime.

[Iron Body Duration increased to 8 minutes per day.]

She didn't stop.

The next floor was a wide cavern—low ceiling, stalactites dripping black water. Undead wolves prowled the shadows—mangy fur, glowing red eyes, jaws dripping acidic saliva. Eight of them, moving in a pack, circling her.

They lunged together.

Elara activated Iron Body again.

Teeth and claws sparked harmlessly against her hardened skin. She grabbed the first wolf by the throat, crushed its windpipe, and threw it into two others. The pack scattered, snarling.

She pursued.

One wolf leapt at her back—she spun, caught it mid-air, slammed it into the ground, and stomped its skull flat. Another bit her calf—teeth screeched against metal-like flesh—she kicked it across the cavern, bones shattering on impact.

When the last wolf fell—neck snapped, body limp—Elara was breathing harder, but still in control.

[Iron Body now grants minor pain suppression while active.]

The final floor before the core was the worst.

Undead trolls.

Four of them—ten feet tall, skin like cracked stone, arms thicker than her thighs, clubs made of fused femurs and skulls. They roared—low, wet, guttural—and charged.

Elara met them head-on.

The first troll swung a massive club. She ducked, rolled under the blow, came up inside its guard, and drove both fists upward into its ribcage. Bone cracked. The troll staggered. She grabbed its arm, twisted, tore it off at the shoulder, then used the severed limb to smash the second troll's knee.

The third troll grabbed her from behind—massive arms crushing around her ribs. She activated Iron Body at maximum—skin turning steel-gray—and headbutted backward, cracking the troll's nose. It roared in pain. She twisted free, jumped, wrapped her legs around its neck, and flipped it forward—slamming its skull into the stone floor so hard the cavern shook.

The fourth troll was already wounded—limping from her earlier blow. She finished it with a running leap—driving her knee into its throat, then grabbing its head and twisting until the neck snapped.

All four trolls down.

Elara stood in the center—chest heaving, blood and ichor streaking her arms and face—then straightened.

[Iron Body Duration increased to 12 minutes per day.]

She wiped blood from her lip.

The final staircase descended ahead—wide, black marble steps leading into darkness lit only by a faint violet glow at the bottom.

She could feel it.

The one who had been watching her.

Ahead lay the heart of the crypt.

And Nyxara was waiting.
