A place could look safe today and become a mess tomorrow if you did not keep fixing it. Yan Cijin walked her to the door with the little dumpling still clinging to Bai Li's hand. The child clearly did not want to let go, so Bai Li crouched down and promised she would come back soon. Only then did the little girl release her, though she still looked very reluctant.
At the door, Yan Cijin paused after watching LiLi turn back toward the living room. Then she looked at Bai Li and said, "About moving in."
Bai Li turned back to her. "Mm?"
Yan Cijin did not rush. She stood there in the doorway with the soft indoor light behind her and the fading evening light outside, making her look even more clear and steady than usual. "I will think it over tonight," she said. "If we do move, I want to go over the storage and safety first."
Bai Li nodded. "That is fine."
"And the child needs to be comfortable."
"Of course."
"Also, your place needs to be easy for us to use."
"It is."
