They could hear the way the building had gone quiet in strange patches. They could feel the heat pressing down harder with every hour. A looped broadcast did not make anyone feel better. It only made the whole thing look even more fake.
Up in the apartments, the residents kept peeking out from balconies and windows. Some of them had been frightened by the earlier gunshots, some had locked their doors tight, and some had already started to panic over the water supply. The building had that ugly feeling of a place where everybody was waiting for something bad to happen next. Bai Li, on the other hand, was in the courtyard below, moving like she had no intention of giving the zombies a single second to breathe. The Tang sword flashed in her hand again and again, fast enough that people on the upper floors could only catch pieces of the movement. Wherever she passed, zombie bodies dropped one after another, leaving behind a trail that made the whole open space look like a battlefield.
