Disaster always arrives without warning.
Like Terra's Catastrophes, an anchor point fell from the sky—slamming straight into the interior of the Hub District Base and shaking the entire area.
The operators who had been discussing the rumor that the legendary Administrator had awakened were hit by the shockwave from the impact, leaving a large number of wounded.
"Cough—cough… what the hell happened?!"
Hao Fan dragged himself up off the ground, staring in alarm at the distant anchor point. It stood in the direction of the old factory zone like a Sword of Damocles, planted into the world.
"A Terra Catastrophe? No… this is an anchor point on Talos-II!"
His expression tightened.
According to the game's setting, an anchor point is a mysterious device capable of catalyzing the formation of Angels.
These devices—of unknown origin—are randomly thrown across Talos-II. After landing, they draw in surrounding natural matter and continuously assemble it into Angels.
And "Angel" is the umbrella term for all hostile mobile entities formed through an anchor point's catalysis—constructed from natural material and bearing a halo-like structure.
They are humanity's primary enemy throughout the history of developing Talos-II. The past Angel War even took its name from them.
At present, the only clearly observed behaviors of Angels are: "form," "dismantle," "mimic," and "attack humans/artificial objects." Their formation process shows obvious signs of assembly and manufacture, so it's difficult to classify them as living organisms in any biological sense.
An individual Angel's appearance, movement method, and attack means—taken together—are called its "formation mode." Angels produced by the same anchor point typically only exhibit a few formation modes.
So, "what formation modes this anchor point can produce" is effectively an inherent property of the anchor point itself.
Since the First Angel War, humanity has continued to observe new formation modes. That led to the creation of the Angelic Classification and Coding Standard, allowing people to quickly look up weaknesses and recommended countermeasures.
While today's Angel threats mostly come from small-scale assaults caused by randomly dropped anchor points, people still remember the historical fact that the northern frontier development zone was completely destroyed in under 24 hours during the First Angel War.
Angels may well remain the single greatest problem humanity faces on Talos-II.
"An Angel attack… we're done for. This is the game's opening plot!"
Hao Fan muttered, a chill crawling up his spine.
Before he transmigrated into Endfield, the game hadn't entered open beta yet—so he knew almost nothing about the story. All he'd heard was that the opening begins with an anchor point impact and an Angel attack.
And of course… he actually ran into it.
"Damn that protagonist halo—why am I this unlucky?!"
Thinking about the meme-tier abilities he'd pulled, Hao Fan felt like life had lost all meaning.
He was a complete weakling. If he ran into even a single Angel, it would be a fight for his life.
He was absurdly weak.
"No—no—no. I need to find somewhere safe to hide."
Hao Fan immediately opened his Game Map to assess the situation.
From earlier testing, he'd discovered the map could display enemy, friendly, and neutral units, marked as red dots, green dots, and white dots on the zoomed-in map overlay.
Now, on the Hub District Base map, most of the green dots—operators—were moving toward the Central Control Tower, probably trying to establish an emergency defensive line.
"Can the defense department actually hold them off…?"
Hao Fan frowned.
To him, the base's operators seemed… average. No one had left a particularly deep impression—at least not on the level of the Rhodes Island operators he remembered.
Worse: on the enlarged map of the old factory zone, the number of red dots was steadily increasing—meaning the newly dropped anchor point was already producing Angels nonstop.
"I'll head to the Central Control Tower too… see if there's anything I can do."
Watching the red dots spread, Hao Fan judged the safest area at the moment was the control tower.
So he started running.
Even if he might encounter Angels on the way, he could detour in advance—
Because he had the map open.
...
Di Jiang.
An urgent call from the liaison officer abruptly cut short what had been a relaxed conversation.
"Supervisor Perlica, there's a new development. Is the Administrator with you right now?"
"She is. What happened, Fiona?"
Perlica lifted a hand to her earpiece, her voice calm and controlled.
"Highest alert. The planned landing zone—no, the entire No. 4 Valley is in danger!"
Fiona's voice was hurried, and the situation she reported was just as serious.
"Just now, the relay drone cluster at the orbital landing point experienced consecutive self-destruction events."
"The communications failure zone is expanding into No. 4 Valley. We can't confirm the status of facilities along the route."
"At the same time, we've detected an extremely strong Angel energy signal."
"The Hub District Base is still silent. Calls on all channels have gotten no response."
"The original plan was to bring the Administrator to the base in ten days, but the Hub District already—"
Fiona continued to report methodically.
Then Perlica made the call immediately—decisively.
"Ten days will be too late."
Her tone sharpened.
"Fiona. I'm departing now."
"Huh—now?!"
Surprise came through the comms, but there was no argument—only compliance.
"I'll confirm… Ground signal interference is severe. If we attempt an unguided emergency descent, there will definitely be deviation. For safety, we can only land in the area surrounding the base."
"Qin Jiangchi and Andre are both at the Hub District Base. According to contingency procedures, they'll take over on-site."
Perlica issued the next instruction:
"Whether we receive a reply from the surface or not, continue transmitting to the Hub District Base. Tell them I'll arrive soon. And…"
She suddenly remembered a reliable special operations operator who should be in No. 4 Valley, and added:
"Notify Chen Qianyu to rendezvous with me at the base."
"Understood. Preparing for immediate drop."
...
"Calibration begin. Target: No. 4 Valley. Landing preparations complete!"
Liaison Fiona finished the pre-launch work.
The Administrator and Perlica looked down at the blue world beyond the ship, preparing to leave the safety of the Di Jiang and head for the Hub District Base—now in crisis.
They were going to save everyone.
Just like before.
"Let's go—back to Talos-II."
