Chapter 9 - the proposal

The old study smelled faintly of aged wood and polished leather. The afternoon sunlight slanted through the tall windows, illuminating the rows of books lining the walls. Mark Keifer Watson's grandfather sat in his armchair, calm and deliberate, when the phone rang.

"Good afternoon," he said, picking up.

"Grandfather Watson," came Jasfer's polite but insistent voice. "This is Jasfer Watson. I hope I'm not disturbing you."

"Not at all," the grandfather replied smoothly. "How may I help you?"

"It's about Jay," Jasfer began. There was a careful precision to her words. "We feel it's time she considers her future. She is talented, brilliant… and well, she is at an age where a suitable match would be appropriate."

There was a brief pause on the other end. "I see," the grandfather said, his tone even. "And you're contacting me because…?"

"Because," Jasfer continued, "we know you have connections. You know the right people, and we trust your judgment. We would like you to help us propose a match—a respectable, suitable young man, someone worthy of her intelligence and character."

The grandfather leaned back in his chair, folding his hands calmly. "Jasfer, I understand your concern, truly. Jay is remarkable, that is undeniable. But I cannot promise anything. Her future is hers to choose, not anyone else's."

"We merely ask for your guidance," Jasfer said softly, almost pleading. "You know the people who might be suitable. We are not asking for guarantees—just introductions, recommendations."

The grandfather nodded slowly, his voice measured. "I can provide options, but I must be clear: no one should feel entitled to her attention. She chooses her path. Always. That is important to remember."

"Yes," Jasfer said, a faint sigh escaping. "Of course, we understand. That is why we reached out to you. We know you will handle this delicately."

"I will," the grandfather replied. "I will consider the matter. But I cannot act beyond what is respectful to her. And if she does not wish to meet anyone, I will honor that."

There was a pause on the line, then Jasfer spoke again, softer this time. "Thank you. That is all we ask. Your wisdom is appreciated more than you know."

"You are welcome," the grandfather said. "I will reach out only if there are suitable options and only with her consent. Everything else is not my place."

As he hung up the phone, he leaned back, eyes thoughtful. Jay's brilliance, independence, and focus made her untouchable to most—but her life would still be guided with care, if anyone tried to intervene.

For now, he would wait. Carefully. Respectfully.
