Shifting pieces
(Everyone has a plan)

After Marina walked out of the room the silence that followed her words lingered longer than the argument itself, heavy and firm
"Watch me."
It wasn't just said in anger it had been a decision.
By the time she got to her room, she already knew one thing for certain Andre wasn't going to tell her anything not about the girl not about the arrangement not about whatever hold the past had over his present decisions which meant she would have to find out herself and Marina was not a woman who waited for answers when she could get them on her own.
She shut the door gently behind her and stood still for a moment letting the quiet settle her thoughts her anger hadn't disappeared but it had shifted into something sharper something more controlled she walked toward her dresser picked up her phone and stared at the screen briefly before dialing
The call connected on the second ring
"I need a favor," she said without preamble
A pause followed then a voice replied "That doesn't sound like a small request"
"It isn't," Marina answered calmly "I need information discreetly handled no noise no trails and definitely no connection back to me"
"You're serious"
"Very"
Another pause longer this time "Alright what am I looking into"
Marina hesitated not because she didn't know but because saying it out loud made it real "A girl"
"That's vague even for you"
"I don't have her name yet but I will soon what I need from you for now is access if anything passes through Andre's office anything unusual I want to know"
"You want me to watch your husband"
"I want you to pay attention," she corrected smoothly "There's a difference"
A quiet breath came from the other end before the voice replied "Fine but Marina whatever this is don't let it get out of hand"
"It already has," she said and ended the call
She lowered the phone slowly her reflection staring back at her from the mirror calm composed almost as if nothing had changed but everything had, she knew Andre well enough to understand that he wouldn't make a move like this without reason and that was exactly what unsettled her
Across the house Andre sat in his study the faint glow from his desk lamp casting shadows across the room a file lay open in front of him untouched for several minutes his thoughts elsewhere he didn't need confirmation to know Marina wouldn't stay still not after tonight not after the way he had shut her out
He reached for his phone and made a call his tone measured when the line connected "Tighten internal access no unnecessary information leaves the office and anything regarding ongoing personal matters is to remain restricted"
"Yes sir"
"And one more thing," he added "if there are any external inquiries no matter how insignificant I want to be informed immediately"
"Understood"
He ended the call and leaned back slightly his gaze drifting toward nothing in particular this was no longer just about an agreement made years ago it had moved beyond that people were beginning to react to it and reactions created variables and Andre did not like variables he preferred control
It had become a silent battle where the fastest runner wins.In the same mansion Damien stood by the window in his room his phone pressed to his ear as he listened his patience wearing thin
"So that's it" he said finally "That's all you've got,no new information"
"I told you this wasn't going to be instant," Vance replied "You gave me a name nothing else no background no connections do you know how many Orabellas exist in this state alone, you should be glad we've been able to get this far without raising suspicions"
"I expected," Damien muttered
"And I expected more to work with," Vance shot back before exhaling "Look we've already narrowed it down to three that's progress, three of them are around the same age range if we sum it up to when that stuff happened years back one of them works at a café at the outskirts of town atleast not too far from the city the other two are students different institutions still digging, I'd place my bet on the other two I'm sure your dad should know about class."
Damien's grip on his phone tightened slightly "a café"
"You're sure about this one"
"As sure as I can be right now," Vance said "Why does that ring a bell"
Damien hesitated his mind flashing briefly to earlier that day the café the atmosphere the waitress who had stood at their table.
"No," he said muttered after a second pushing the thought aside "Just keep digging I want a clear answer soon"
"You'll get it," Vance replied "Just don't expect miracles overnight, but I'll hasten up I'll try to round it up to one person"
The call ended and Damien lowered his phone his expression unreadable for a moment before he exhaled sharply running a hand through his hair he didn't like how this was playing out, the secrecy, the lack of control and the idea that someone he didn't even know was suddenly at the center of decisions being made for him
Across town Orabella closed from the café for the day and headed back home, the night air cooler now brushing lightly against her skin, the day had been long her mind heavier than usual not because of the work but because of everything that had come with it
She walked slowly her thoughts drifting back to Andre his calm presence the way he spoke like everything had already been decided and yet still left room for her to choose it unsettled her in a way she couldn't quite explain
And then there was the café earlier
The brief moment
The glance
She frowned slightly trying to piece it together again the feeling hadn't left her that quiet sense of familiarity like she had seen him somewhere before but no matter how much she tried to place it nothing came
"Maybe it's nothing," she murmured to herself though it didn't sound convincing even to her
Her steps slowed as another thought surfaced uninvited, her father's voice from memory steady and certain "I have a feeling I made the right decision".
She exhaled softly shaking her head as if to clear it she wasn't ready to accept that not yet there were too many questions not enough answers and no reason for her to simply trust something she didn't understand
Still
She couldn't ignore it either
Back at the mansion the night stretched on quietly but beneath that quiet everything had shifted Marina was no longer waiting,Andre was already preparing his next move and Damien was getting closer without even realizing it.
And somewhere in between all of it Orabella stood, the center of a decision that was slowly pulling all of them toward the same point whether they were ready for it or not.
