Chapter 44 - Chapter 44: Gold Ship Seems to Have Noticed Something

"Ready!"

At Nishizaki Ryuu's shout, Daiwa Scarlet and Vodka forced themselves to focus.

But the instant the gates snapped open—along with that figure that seemed to launch out like she'd been burning rubber inside the stall—the oppressive pressure vanished at once. The sudden lightness threw them off instead, making them hesitate.

"How the hell does she break that fast?" Nishizaki blurted. "I've been a trainer for years and I've never seen anything like that!"

Watching Eternal Meteor burst out as if she'd sprung out together with the gate, his mouth fell open.

What kind of reaction speed did it take to do that without misstepping and slamming into the gate?

Was that really something a newly debuted horse girl should be capable of?

"Eternal Meteor, gooo!"

"Gold Ship, whose side are you on?!"

"Daiwa! Vodka! Let's go!"

Gold Ship raised her cold drink and roared support for Eternal Meteor, while Special Week cheered for Daiwa Scarlet and Vodka.

Their yelling instantly lit a fuse—soon all the spectators were shouting for whoever they liked.

"Eternal Meteor! Leave them all in the dust!"

"Daiwa Scarlet, come on! Catch up!"

"Vodka, do your best—if you don't get blown out, that's already a win!"

…Okay, so basically everyone agreed Eternal Meteor was about to slaughter the field.

But for now, let's switch the camera to the Student Council office.

Student Council Office

Rudolf was in an excellent mood today.

Meteor had eaten obediently in the morning, and her relationship with Tokai Teio had clearly gotten much better—something Rudolf hadn't expected at all.

"Next time, I should have Teio take her out to play more." Rudolf mused. "But it's already around this time… I wonder if Meteor went to the cafeteria for lunch."

Thinking back to how picky Meteor had been in the morning, Rudolf felt a faint worry.

The doctor had said Meteor was seriously malnourished—this was exactly the age when she needed to eat properly.

"Mmm… I'll go find her in a bit," Rudolf decided. "So she doesn't skip food, or refuse her medicine."

She stretched—right arm straight, left hand bracing it—then gently rubbed her neck.

She'd been stuck processing documents all morning. Her whole body felt stiff.

Her ears twitched twice.

From the direction of the track, she could hear faint, muffled cheering. Curious, she stood and walked to the window.

"Probably another well-known team doing a training race. Spica and Rigil, maybe? Perfect—something to relax and watch…"

She leaned closer.

And then—

Her smile froze solid.

Her good mood fell straight off a cliff.

Staring at the white figure sprinting on the track, Rudolf felt like her heart condition was about to flare up on the spot.

Why is that Eternal Meteor?!

And she's racing… Daiwa Scarlet and Vodka?! Their trainer is Nishizaki Ryuu!

Once she confirmed who the opposing team was, Rudolf decided she'd have a long talk with Trainer Nishizaki in the afternoon.

No—first she needed to talk to Eternal Meteor. Otherwise it would be treating the symptoms, not the cause.

This little ancestor really never gave anyone a break.

You're not even fully developed yet—why are you running?

And you can still crush girls who've already entered full development…?

Watching Meteor widen the gap more and more, Rudolf couldn't even imagine how terrifying she'd be after full development.

Back on the Track

"I… I can't… anymore…"

Sweat completely soaked Daiwa Scarlet's hair, plastering it to her face. Through blurred vision, she watched Eternal Meteor growing farther and farther away and began seriously questioning her life choices.

Vodka wasn't doing much better.

She did pass Daiwa Scarlet in the last 200 meters, but she was still eleven lengths behind Eternal Meteor—and no matter how she pushed, she couldn't reduce the distance even a little.

"Sh-she… is she… a… monster…?"

Eternal Meteor maintained a full-on runaway lead all the way to the finish, and she didn't even look particularly worn down.

Past the line, she'd barely shed any sweat—either the wind had dried it instantly, or she was just that relaxed.

Vodka and Daiwa Scarlet, meanwhile, collapsed the moment they crossed, panting hard.

(Lying down right after intense exercise and being fine… horse girl bodies are truly something.)

Nishizaki kept looking up and down between the stopwatch and the track, suspecting his eyes had malfunctioned.

"Meteor! Let's go eat lunch together!" Gold Ship shouted, already running over. "Huh? What's wrong? Are you okay?"

Meteor suddenly covered her mouth.

"Ghk— I'm fine, I'm fine—urk." She waved with her free hand, throat bobbing like she'd swallowed something back down. "I drank too many drinks this morning, I feel a little nauseous. I'm going to the bathroom."

After forcing out the explanation, she turned and hurried away.

But as Meteor left, Gold Ship thought she saw something behind Meteor's palm—

A flash of red in her cheek, like blood.

Gold Ship stared at her retreating back, suspicion brewing.

The Dorm

Afraid another horse girl might run into her, Meteor didn't dare use the track's public bathroom.

She sprinted with everything she had toward the dorm's shower room.

Once inside, she locked the door—

and started vomiting blood.

Earlier, she'd forcibly swallowed one mouthful back down just to answer Gold Ship, and the sensation disgusted her so much she wanted to crawl out of her own skin.

She vomited until everything in her stomach came out.

Then she kept retching until all she could bring up was stomach acid—no matter how much she tried to trigger her throat.

Only then did she finally breathe in huge, ragged gulps.

She looked at the mess in the bathroom: blood mixed with half-digested food, and the stench that came with it. Her face twisted with pure disgust.

X's voice, merciless as ever:

"So? Enjoy showing off? Enjoy going all-out? You gonna do it again next time?"

Meteor didn't argue.

This was self-inflicted. All of it.

She could only sigh and start cleaning.

There was absolutely no way Rudolf could come back to a dorm that smelled like this—or worse, saw blood.

She really didn't want to spend another night in the hospital.
