Chapter 29 - Chapter 29: Choose the Big Breakaway—Choose Victory

"Eternal Meteor actually went for a big breakaway this time? Do you think she can win?"

"Hard to say. If anything, she's basically giving up her biggest advantage."

In the stands, two young men couldn't help debating as they watched Meteor's ever-accelerating stride.

"How so?"

The one without glasses glanced sideways. His companion pushed up his frames in an exaggerated, show-offy motion—so smug the lenses flashed white.

"Last race, Eternal Meteor opened that huge gap for two reasons. One—her explosive power. Two—"

He deliberately trailed off… until his friend slapped his shoulder.

"Quit talking like a riddle. Spit it out."

"Ow—fine! Use your words, don't hit people!"

"Stop stalling!"

"…Two: because she was hunting them down the whole way."

Rubbing his reddened shoulder, the glasses guy continued.

"Last race, she stayed in the back and put pressure on every horse girl ahead of her. Think back—every time someone got caught by Eternal Meteor, they'd start sprinting like their life depended on it."

"Like they were really running for their lives," the other guy finished automatically.

The glasses guy nodded.

"Exactly. I was so absorbed during the race that I didn't notice until later—Meteor's hoofprints were deeper than everyone else's. I think she was scaring them with the sound of her horseshoes."

"So everyone panicked and ran, their rhythm completely collapsed, and she reeled them in. But… what if she didn't do that this time because she figured G3 runners wouldn't get scared so easily?"

That last line jammed the glasses guy's next sentence right back down his throat. He denied it hard.

"Even if that were true, she still shouldn't choose a big breakaway. Like you said, these are G3s—they won't get their pace totally hijacked."

"…Uh. You sure?" his friend asked, voice wobbling as the tempo on the track visibly increased.

"A professional Uma Musume spectator has to dare to make calls!"

"Then maybe look again."

"What?!"

The glasses guy whipped his attention back to the race, grabbed the rail with both hands, and practically tried to glue his face to the track.

His friend pointed and laughed—and right on cue, the commentator's voice boomed:

"All runners are still accelerating! Looks like they have no intention of letting the two breakaway leaders go!"

Meteor didn't care what the others were doing.

She was simply enjoying the run.

The scenery only she could claim.

The screaming wind slashing across her face.

The burning heat of her breath in her lungs—

The sensation that proved she was still alive.

Her body felt like a furnace.

Her lungs like bellows.

Each hot exhale sent power surging into her limbs, feeding the next stride.

In her eyes there was only one thing:

herself crossing the finish line.

No strategy.

No restraint.

Just faster, faster, faster—

never stopping until she burned out completely.

"You've gotta be kidding meeeee!!"

Twin Turbo roared, watching that back ahead of her pull farther away no matter how hard she pushed.

Turbo was also a front-runner.

So why—why couldn't she even get close?

Even swinging her legs to the limit, even burning every last scrap of stamina—

why was that figure only getting more distant?

"Eternal Meteoooor!"

"Eternal Meteor! Number 6, Eternal Meteor, has opened a three-length gap on Twin Turbo—who is also a breakaway runner! And behind them, the rest of the field is still speeding up!"

Rapid General sucked in a breath, lowered her body, and began accelerating too.

She'd chosen a leading strategy to guard against Twin Turbo, but now it was clear—

the real threat was this sudden intruder: Eternal Meteor.

Together with Ibuki Mai Kagura, she began to chase down Twin Turbo, and under their pull the entire pack followed, continuing to lift the pace.

"So this is what you call 'she won't push herself'?" Rudolf said through gritted teeth.

"..."

Watching Meteor drag the whole field into a big-breakaway tempo, Rudolf's face twisted into pure pain.

And Meteor was still accelerating—like she didn't care whether her ankle or wounds had actually healed.

Even Maruzensky had gone quiet. Nobody expected the brat to make a promise one day and start tormenting herself the next.

"…I mean, at least she took the turn normally this time."

Meteor didn't lean in and crush the corner like before—so maybe she'd listened… a little. Maybe.

The commentator stared at the stopwatch, like their eyes were lying.

"Unbelievable! The average speed has reached 65 km/h! Even the slowest runner is above 62 km/h—and they've only just cleared the first turn!!"

The stadium went silent for a beat, then erupted into frantic chatter.

"This is a G3, right?!"

"Yeah… you're not seeing things."

"What kind of pace even is this?!"

"Won't everyone die and hit a wall at the end?!"

"Eternal Meteor, go!!"

The glasses guy in the stands looked like his worldview was collapsing:

First, Meteor instantly created a three-length gap on Twin Turbo—another breakaway runner—and the gap was still widening.

Then, the entire pack behind them started accelerating together.

Then the commentator dropped those numbers.

He felt numb.

On the track, Ibuki Mai Kagura's gaze slipped past Twin Turbo and locked onto Meteor.

Just wait.

The moment she runs out of stamina… the moment her steps slow even a little… that's my opening.

For now, she stayed a short distance behind Turbo to read the situation—no need to waste stamina chasing Turbo directly.

Rapid General, meanwhile, wanted more. She intended to latch onto Turbo, use her as a windbreak—

after all, she was a front-runner too.

"Ibuki Mai Kagura is now just three lengths behind Twin Turbo! Wait—Rapid General is closing too! Rapid General is still accelerating!"

The two young men exchanged a look.

Neither could speak anymore.

Only one question rose up from the bottom of their hearts:

Is this really just a G3 race?

Is your 'G3' authentic or what?!

And then they snapped their eyes back to the track.

A race this insane—missing even one moment would be a crime.
