Chapter 15 - Taxonomy Is Required

The lecture hall was not meant for first-years.

That much was obvious the moment Andreas entered. The benches were wider than usual, carved from dark stone worn smooth by generations of stillness. The distance between each seat was deliberate.

Enough that no one could lean close.

Enough that conversation became effort.

The slate at the front of the hall was old. Not merely reused, but scarred. Layers of chalk residue had seeped into the stone, leaving faint shadows of diagrams long erased. Some lines were so deeply cut they had become permanent.

No banners hung here.

No academy colors.

Only structure.

And Andreas was not seated among his peers.

He was seated among records.

The hall filled slowly.

Upper-year students with measured movements.A handful of instructors who did not speak to one another.Several figures Andreas recognized only from reputation, people whose names appeared in footnotes and sealed reports.

No one looked comfortable.

This was not a lecture meant to inspire.

It was meant to define boundaries.

Professor Kain stood at the front when the doors closed.

Not behind a desk.

Not elevated.

Simply present.

"What you are about to hear," he said, "is not instruction."

His voice carried easily, without force.

"It will not help you improve your performance."

A pause.

"It will explain why improvement is regulated."

He turned to the slate and wrote, carefully and centered:

Then, one by one, he added seven terms.

"These are not ranks," Kain said."They are states of cognition."

"They do not measure intelligence."

"They measure what the human mind can sustain without erosion."

He tapped the first.

"Storing is capacity," he said. "Retention without interpretation."

"To fail here is to be unable to practice magic at all."

No one reacted.

Everyone understood that much.

"Knowing assigns meaning."

"Names. Categories. Recognition."

"And its danger," Kain continued, "is certainty."

Certainty without understanding.

Certainty without doubt.

"Questioning introduces instability."

"Curiosity."

"Contradiction."

"The impulse to challenge what is known."

Several students shifted in their seats.

"Understanding integrates systems."

"Most institutions end here," Kain said. "Because understanding is safe."

"Understanding produces competence."

"It does not demand consequence."

"Analyzing disassembles."

"Efficiency is born here."

"So is detachment."

Andreas felt the word settle.

"Evaluating compares."

"It judges."

"It chooses."

"And choice," Kain said evenly, "creates pain."

A faint ripple passed through the hall.

Finally—

"Creating."

Kain did not touch the word.

"This is synthesis."

"Formation."

"Emergence."

"It is also the point at which cognition begins to interfere with identity."

"These stages," Kain said, stepping back, "may be skipped."

The statement landed hard.

"But Lazarus does not concern itself with what you can do."

"It concerns itself with what you lose."

He drew a second heading beside the taxonomy.

COST OF SKIPPED STATES

"Skipping Questioning," Kain said,"produces obedience. Emotional narrowing. Reliance on authority."

"Skipping Understanding,""produces power without empathy."

"Skipping Analyzing,""produces instinct without coherence."

"Skipping Evaluating,""produces action without pain."

"And skipping Creating,""produces outcomes without identity."

The hall was silent.

"These losses are not symbolic," Kain said.

"They are neurological."

"Vital."

"Permanent."

A student near the back raised a hand.

"What happens if someone occupies too many states at once?"

Kain looked at him.

"The mind compensates," he said.

"How?"

"By shutting systems down."

"Emotion."

"Sensation."

"Identity."

The student lowered his hand.

Kain erased the slate.

Then wrote again.

MATERIALIZATION — PYRINAS STRUCTURE

"Materialization is not creation from nothing," he said.

"It is organization of Pyrinas."

He drew a circle at the center.

Labeled it PYRINAS.

"Pyrinas is not matter."

"Not energy."

"It is the permission for structure to exist."

From the circle, he drew three branches.

"Product," he said, tapping the first.

"When Pyrinas is shaped through activity."

"Tools."

"Weapons."

"Constructs."

"Temporary. Dependent. Non-autonomous."

"Organic."

"When Pyrinas fuses with Vital."

"Self-regulating forms."

"Tissue."

"Regeneration."

"Thrylos."

The word drew a visible reaction.

"And Element."

"When Pyrinas coexists with natural phenomena."

"Fire stabilized."

"Stone structured beyond geology."

"Form without dominance."

"All branches must remain connected to the core," Kain said.

"Isolation produces brittleness."

"Overextension produces collapse."

He wiped the slate clean again.

INSTINCTUAL MAGIC — RESPONSE STATES

"Instinctual magic is not taught," Kain said.

"It is triggered."

He listed the stages.

"Aggressive prioritizes force."

"Defensive prioritizes protection—often of others."

"Intuitive balances prior states."

He paused.

"Instinctual progression ignores hierarchy," Kain said.

"It responds only to pressure."

"This is why Lazarus does not reward it."

Another erasure.

Another heading.

REFORMATION — VITAL INTERACTION

"Reformation manipulates existing life," Kain said.

"It does not create."

"It does not conceptualize."

He wrote:

"All official stages respect life as a process," he said.

"They repair."

"They do not command."

Kain stepped back from the slate.

"You will notice," he said, "that each discipline has a point where Lazarus stops instruction."

"And yet," he added, "records continue."

He did not write the names.

He did not need to.

"These terminal classifications," Kain said calmly,"are not advancements."

"They are failures of restraint."

The lecture ended without ceremony.

No applause.

No questions.

That night, Andreas sat alone in his room.

He did not practice.

He did not attempt regulation.

He simply observed.

His thoughts rose toward analysis.

Evaluation followed.

The headache stirred—not sharply, but insistently.

Not pain.

Warning.

Lazarus had not told him how to grow.

It had told him where growth breaks.

And for the first time, Andreas understood the academy's true function.

Not to create the exceptional.

But to delay the inevitable.
