Chapter 21 - CHAPTER 21

CHAPTER 21, EYES IN THE SHADOWS

The mountain had fallen silent.

What once pulsed with darkness now stood like an empty shell—cracked, broken, and lifeless. The black veins that once crawled across its surface had faded, leaving behind nothing but cold stone.

But Jay knew better.

Silence like this… was never the end.

It was the calm before something greater.

---

The wind blew gently across the open land.

For the first time in days, it felt… normal.

Elara had moved a short distance away, sitting on a rock while examining the girl's condition. The faint glow of her magic flickered as she checked her pulse, her breathing, the traces of lingering energy within her body.

"She's stable," Elara said after a moment. "The corruption is gone."

Jay stood with his back to them, his gaze fixed on the distant horizon.

"…Gone for now."

---

The girl slowly sat up.

Her movements were weak, but controlled. There was no longer any darkness in her eyes—only confusion and exhaustion.

She looked around, taking in the unfamiliar surroundings.

"…Where are we?"

Elara gave a small, reassuring smile.

"You're safe. That's what matters."

---

The girl's eyes shifted toward Jay.

There was something different in her gaze now.

Not fear.

Not confusion.

Something deeper.

"…You saved me."

Jay didn't turn around.

"I destroyed what was controlling you."

---

There was a brief silence.

Then she spoke again—

"…My name is Lira."

---

Jay finally glanced over his shoulder.

For a moment, he said nothing.

Then—

"Jay."

---

Lira nodded slowly, as if memorizing it.

---

Elara stood up, brushing the dust from her clothes.

"We can't stay here."

She looked toward the mountain.

"Even if the Core is gone… something like that doesn't exist alone."

---

Jay's eyes narrowed slightly.

"…You're right."

---

Suddenly—

a faint blue light flickered in front of him.

The system.

---

Jay stared at the screen.

So it wasn't over.

Not even close.

---

"Multiple Cores…" Elara muttered as she read over his shoulder.

"…This is bigger than we thought."

---

Jay closed the screen.

"It always was."

---

Lira slowly stood up.

Her body trembled slightly—but she forced herself to remain steady.

"…That thing… it wasn't alone."

Both Jay and Elara looked at her.

---

Lira's voice dropped.

"I remember… before you broke the connection…"

"There were others."

---

Jay's expression hardened.

"How many?"

---

Lira shook her head.

"I don't know… but…"

She hesitated.

"…they were stronger."

---

The air grew heavy again.

---

Elara crossed her arms, thinking.

"If there are multiple Cores… then they're probably connected."

Jay nodded.

"A network."

---

He looked toward the horizon again.

"…Which means someone built it."

---

That thought alone changed everything.

This wasn't random corruption.

This wasn't natural.

This was planned.

---

Suddenly—

Jay's body shifted slightly.

His senses sharpened.

---

"…We're being watched."

---

Elara reacted instantly, raising her staff.

"Where?"

---

Jay didn't answer immediately.

His eyes scanned the surroundings.

The rocks.

The shadows.

The distant ridge.

---

Then—

he saw it.

A figure.

Standing far away.

Watching them.

---

Tall.

Still.

Unmoving.

---

For a brief moment—

their eyes met.

---

And then—

the figure disappeared.

---

Gone.

Without a trace.

---

Elara frowned.

"Did you see that?"

---

Jay nodded slowly.

"…Yes."

---

Lira's voice trembled slightly.

"…It feels similar…"

"…to that thing…"

---

Jay's expression turned cold.

"…But stronger."

---

A faint smile appeared on his face.

Not of joy—

but of anticipation.

---

"Good."

---

Elara looked at him.

"…Good?"

---

Jay turned toward them.

His eyes sharper than ever.

---

"That means we're getting closer."

---

The wind picked up slightly.

The world around them felt different now.

Like something had shifted.

---

Jay adjusted his cloak.

"We move."

---

Elara nodded.

"Where to?"

---

Jay looked toward the distant lands.

Far beyond the broken mountain.

---

"…Where the next Core is."

---

And without hesitation—

he began walking.

---

This time—

he wasn't just chasing a cure.

---

He was hunting something far greater.

---

And somewhere in the shadows—

something else…

was hunting him too.
