Chapter 14 - CHAPTER 14

CHAPTER 14,"The Silent Assassin in the Shadows"

The forest did not return to normal.

Even after the corrupted beasts had fallen, even after the massive alpha lay motionless on the cold ground—something still felt wrong.

The air itself had changed.

It was heavier now.

Darker.

As if the forest was no longer just a place…

but a warning.

Jay continued walking without looking back.

Elara followed a few steps behind, her grip still firm on her staff. Her mind was not calm. What they had just faced wasn't something that should exist so close to the outer regions.

And yet—

it had.

"You felt it too, didn't you?" she finally said.

Jay didn't slow down.

"Yes."

Elara frowned slightly.

"That wasn't just corruption. Something was… controlling it."

Jay's eyes moved slightly toward the deeper forest.

"Not something."

Elara looked at him.

"…Someone?"

Jay didn't answer.

But the silence itself was enough.

They walked for several more minutes.

The forest path had almost disappeared now. What remained was a rough direction rather than a clear road. The deeper they went, the less signs of human presence remained.

No footprints.

No broken branches.

Nothing.

As if no one had walked this path in years.

Then—

Jay stopped again.

This time, his reaction was sharper.

Faster.

Elara immediately raised her staff.

"What is it?"

Jay didn't speak.

He simply raised his hand slightly—

signaling her to stay quiet.

Elara obeyed instantly.

The forest was silent.

But not empty.

Jay slowly turned his head toward the right.

There.

Behind a cluster of thick trees.

Something was moving.

No sound.

No visible presence.

But Jay's instincts were screaming.

Without warning—

he vanished.

Elara's eyes widened again.

"Again—"

Before she could react—

CRACK!

A loud impact echoed through the trees.

Jay reappeared several meters away—

blocking something.

Not with his weapon—

but with his hand.

His fingers were gripping something invisible.

No—

not invisible.

Just… hidden.

Slowly, the shape revealed itself.

A thin blade.

Black.

Almost blending perfectly with the darkness.

Jay's grip tightened.

"You're not very patient," he said calmly.

A figure stepped out from the shadows.

Completely silent.

Dressed in dark clothing that seemed to absorb light itself.

Only the eyes were visible—

cold and sharp.

Elara whispered,

"…Assassin?"

The figure tilted its head slightly.

"You're more aware than the others," the stranger said in a low voice.

Jay released the blade and stepped back.

The assassin didn't attack immediately.

Instead, he observed.

Carefully.

Then he spoke again.

"You're not normal."

Jay's expression remained unchanged.

"Neither are you."

For a brief moment—

silence returned.

Then—

the assassin disappeared.

Not moved.

Disappeared.

Elara's eyes widened.

"Teleportation—?!"

Jay's gaze sharpened.

"No."

The air shifted behind him.

Jay turned instantly—

and blocked another strike.

This time with his blade.

CLANG!

Sparks flew.

The assassin was right there—

as if he had appeared out of nothing.

Jay pushed him back.

"You hide your presence well," Jay said.

The assassin didn't respond.

He attacked again.

Faster this time.

Multiple strikes.

Precise.

Deadly.

Jay stepped back—

dodging, deflecting, analyzing.

Each movement of the assassin was calculated.

No wasted motion.

No hesitation.

This wasn't a bandit.

This was someone trained.

Elara raised her staff.

"Do you need help—"

"No."

Jay's voice cut through the air.

Calm.

Firm.

"This one is mine."

The assassin's eyes narrowed slightly.

Then—

for the first time—

he smiled.

"Good."

And then—

he vanished again.

Jay didn't move.

Instead—

he closed his eyes.

Elara looked at him in shock.

"What are you doing?!"

Jay ignored her.

The forest disappeared from his mind.

The sounds faded.

The wind slowed.

Everything became still.

Then—

he felt it.

A shift.

A distortion.

Behind him.

Jay moved instantly.

He didn't turn.

He didn't look.

He simply—

teleported.

FLASH!

He appeared directly behind the assassin.

For the first time—

the assassin was caught off guard.

His eyes widened.

Jay's blade moved—

but stopped just inches from the assassin's neck.

Silence.

Neither of them moved.

Then Jay spoke.

"You're not here to kill me."

The assassin didn't resist.

"…No."

Jay lowered his blade slightly.

"Then why?"

The assassin slowly stepped back.

His eyes studied Jay with a new kind of interest.

"I was sent to observe you."

Elara frowned.

"By who?"

The assassin looked at her briefly.

Then back at Jay.

"By someone who is also watching the Ashen Mountains."

Jay's eyes narrowed.

"Name."

The assassin shook his head.

"Not yet."

Jay's grip on his weapon tightened slightly.

But he didn't attack.

Instead, he asked,

"What do they want?"

The assassin answered calmly.

"They want to know if you're a threat…"

He paused.

Then added,

"Or an asset."

The forest grew colder.

Elara stepped forward slightly.

"This is getting out of hand…"

Jay raised his hand—

stopping her.

His eyes never left the assassin.

"And what did you decide?"

The assassin smiled faintly.

"That depends."

On you."

A moment of silence passed.

Then—

the assassin stepped back into the shadows.

His body slowly faded into the darkness.

"Be careful," his voice echoed faintly.

"You're not the only one walking toward those mountains."

And then—

he was gone.

Completely.

No presence.

No trace.

Only silence remained.

Elara exhaled slowly.

"…I don't like this."

Jay looked toward the direction where the assassin had disappeared.

"Good."

Elara looked at him.

"Why 'good'?"

Jay turned and continued walking.

"Because it means we're getting closer."

Elara stared at him for a moment.

Then followed.

But now—

the journey had changed.

This was no longer just about reaching the mountains.

Now—

others were watching.

Others were moving.

And somewhere ahead—

forces far more dangerous than beasts or bandits were beginning to gather.

The Ashen Mountains were no longer just a destination.

They were becoming—

a battlefield.
