Chapter 159 - Chapter 159 - Briefing At The Sanctuary

Morning light touched the upper branches of the Great Tree long before it reached the ground.

The canopy caught the first sunlight and turned it gold while the Sanctuary below remained in shadow. Frost still clung to the earth inside the walls, but the settlement had already been awake for hours.

Smoke curled upward from dozens of cooking fires.

Voices carried across the compound.

The Sanctuary had grown.

What had once been a small protected camp now spread across a wide clearing along the southern shore of Onondaga Lake. Cabins built from timber and stone lined the inner grounds. Longhouses stood near the tribal quarters. Barracks built by former soldiers stood opposite them.

At the outer perimeter rose the real defense.

Mike's earlier terraforming had turned the entire settlement into a layered fortress.

Earthen ramparts formed the outer wall, reinforced with stone ribs that rose like the bones of a buried giant. Timber palisades crowned the ridges. Guard towers stood every hundred yards, each with clear sightlines across the valley and the lake.

Approach roads funneled into narrow gates.

Each gate was designed as a trap.

Earthen walls forced wagons to slow and turn.

Stone barriers created firing corridors.

Anyone approaching Sanctuary had to move through ground that favored the defenders.

Beyond the walls lay open land.

And that land was alive.

Herds moved slowly across the fields and tree lines.

Elk grazed near the western ridge.

A cluster of bison moved through the tall grass beyond the lake road.

White-tailed deer moved constantly through the forests surrounding the settlement.

They had been there for months now, ever since the deeper days of the Shroud.

Animals that had fled the dying world had gathered here and never left.

Two soldiers stood in the north watchtower watching the valley.

One leaned on the railing and shook his head slightly.

"Never seen wildlife like this."

A tribal scout beside him nodded.

"The land remembers where it is safe."

The soldier looked out at the grazing herds.

"Hope it stays that way."

Below them the compound continued moving.

People hauling lumber.

Soldiers drilling near the inner yard.

Children chasing each other between water barrels.

Near the eastern wall sat something that made every visitor stare.

Rows of military vehicles.

Abrams tanks rested beneath heavy camouflage netting.

Armored transports stood parked beside supply sheds.

Artillery pieces were positioned along the ridge lines where they could fire out across the valley if needed.

Everything was covered in hardened shielding casings.

EMP blockers.

Generators hummed quietly in protected bunkers beneath reinforced sheds.

Sanctuary did not advertise its strength.

But it was there.

Hidden.

Waiting.

Operations Hall

Inside the main operations building the entire settlement had gathered.

The room was full.

Saul stood beside the projection table while the map of North America glowed faintly in the air.

Emma stood near the medical table.

Billy Jack leaned against the wall with Daniel Red Elk and Raymond Torres.

Gary stood beside Amanda near the weapon racks.

Ben and Carla worked near the communication console.

Ivar and Sgt. Vargas stood with several soldiers.

Marie sat with Penelope and Silas.

Henrik sat quietly near the back wall, listening without fully understanding why the conversation mattered so much.

Olaf stood near the map.

Erin stood beside him.

Saul waited until the room settled.

Then he spoke.

"We have confirmation of the situation spreading through the waterways."

The map shifted.

Rivers lit up across the continent.

Mississippi.

Colorado.

Ohio.

Genesee.

Snake.

"Recent field reports confirm hostile aquatic mutants moving through river systems."

A murmur passed through the room.

Saul continued.

"They are aggressive."

"They spread through bites."

"They remain biologically human."

That line caused several people to look up.

Emma nodded slightly.

"That matters."

Saul agreed.

"Yes."

He tapped the map again.

"This is not divine corruption."

"This is not entropy."

He let that settle.

"This is human failure."

Silence filled the room.

Saul continued calmly.

"Someone attempted accelerated regenerative research during the early Shroud period."

The map briefly zoomed toward the southwest.

Arizona.

"Containment failed."

He zoomed back out.

"Water systems spread the mutation outward."

Gary frowned slightly.

"So every river is a highway."

Saul nodded.

"Exactly."

Billy Jack spoke quietly.

"Which means the lakes too."

"Yes."

Saul pointed toward the Great Lakes.

"Observation teams report anomalies already appearing in Lake Erie."

Marie looked toward the map anxiously.

"That's where Hugo is."

Saul nodded.

"Yes."

Penelope squeezed Silas's hand.

Silas kept staring at the glowing waterways.

Saul continued.

"Natural choke points exist."

The map highlighted several locations.

Niagara Escarpment.

Letchworth Gorge.

Mount Morris Dam.

"These areas may slow or redirect the spread."

He turned toward the room.

"We will support those locations."

Volunteers

Saul stepped away from the map slightly.

"We will likely send support teams to assist the Western New York settlements holding those choke points."

Several soldiers straightened immediately.

Gary raised an eyebrow.

Saul looked around the room.

"I am asking for volunteers."

Before he could finish the sentence Gary raised his hand.

"I'll go."

Amanda looked at him sideways.

"That was fast."

Gary shrugged.

"Someone has to."

Several soldiers stepped forward as well.

Two tribal riders from the Iroquois group joined them without hesitation.

Billy Jack nodded approvingly.

Saul raised a hand slightly.

"We will wait for Shane's return before deploying."

Gary lowered his hand but didn't look disappointed.

"Fair enough."

Conversations

The meeting slowly dissolved into smaller groups.

Soldiers spoke quietly with tribal scouts about patrol routes.

Farmers discussed supply wagons.

Near the map table Cory's data reports were being reviewed by Saul and Emma.

Ben stood near the communication rack, quietly stabilizing the signal grid that linked Sanctuary to dozens of distant settlements.

His power—Signal Sanctity—kept the fragile network from collapsing under interference.

Across the room Amanda studied a paper map while small glowing lines appeared across its surface.

Her Architect's Map ability helped visualize infrastructure paths.

Supply routes.

River crossings.

Road repairs.

Nearby Ivar worked with Vargas and several logistics officers.

His rare organizational ability made the chaos of hundreds of refugees and soldiers somehow function smoothly.

Food deliveries.

Livestock rotations.

Construction crews.

Everything flowed through his mental planning.

Marie, Penelope, and Silas

Marie watched the map quietly.

Penelope leaned toward her.

"You're thinking about Hugo."

Marie nodded.

"Yes."

Silas leaned back in his chair.

"He'll be fine."

Penelope wasn't convinced.

"These things sound bad."

Silas smiled faintly.

"Hugo has Kinetic Redirection."

Marie laughed softly.

"That ability still sounds impossible."

Silas shrugged.

"So does half the stuff in this building."

Olaf and Erin

Outside the hall Olaf and Erin walked slowly across the courtyard.

Sleipnir grazed beneath the pines nearby.

Henrik sat at a bench carving wood.

Erin watched him carefully.

"You want to awaken him."

Olaf nodded.

"Yes."

She folded her arms.

"That changes everything for him."

Olaf looked toward the lake.

"The threads are tightening."

Erin was silent.

Olaf continued.

"Hoenir sees patterns."

"We may need that."

She looked back at Henrik.

"He deserves a choice."

Olaf smiled slightly.

"Then we ask him."

Erin sighed.

"Alright."

Billy Jack and Olaf

Billy Jack found Olaf near the stable fence.

"The frog is doing fine."

Olaf nodded.

"I expected it would."

Billy Jack continued.

"I've already started extracting small amounts of venom."

Olaf looked interested.

"And the results?"

Billy Jack smiled faintly.

"Potent."

"Extremely potent."

Olaf nodded slowly.

"The jungle approved its transfer."

Billy Jack leaned against the fence.

"So we respect that."

"Yes."

Billy Jack thought for a moment.

"If this thing spreads…"

"…we may need more."

Olaf looked south.

"The Amazon."

Billy Jack chuckled.

"That's a long ride."

Olaf smiled faintly.

"Yes."

"But permission matters."

Sanctuary Walls

Late afternoon light spread across the compound.

People moved along the walls and towers as patrols rotated.

Beyond the gates the wildlife still grazed calmly.

Inside the settlement life continued building itself.

Cabins.

Barracks.

Gardens.

Longhouses.

Sanctuary had become something far larger than its founders ever expected.

Not just a refuge.

Not just a village.

A fortress.

And somewhere far away—

in rivers and lakes across the continent—

something new was beginning to move.

"If you enjoyed Shane's journey, please drop a Power Stone! It helps the Common Sense Party grow!"
