Chapter 145 - Chapter 145 - Night At The Reservoir

The moon rose slowly above the hills.

Silver light spread across the reservoir until the water looked like polished metal stretching between the dark ridges.

Most of the tribal settlement had gone quiet.

Only a few lanterns still burned near the outer homes.

Shane stood on the rocky slope overlooking the shoreline with Freya, Thor, Sif, Magni, and Oscar.

Johnny John stood slightly apart, watching the water with calm focus.

The reservoir looked peaceful.

Too peaceful.

Freya crossed her arms.

"Still nothing."

Thor shifted his weight.

"You're sure this is the spot?"

One of the tribal hunters nodded.

"Cattle disappeared there."

He pointed toward a shallow inlet where reeds grew thick along the shore.

Oscar squinted toward the water.

"Looks normal to me."

Shane didn't answer.

He was watching the surface.

The wind died.

The water stilled.

Then—

a ripple moved across the inlet.

Not wind.

Something beneath the surface.

Thor leaned forward slightly.

"You see that?"

Freya nodded.

"Yes."

The ripple widened.

Reeds along the shoreline bent suddenly as something brushed through them underwater.

The surface bulged.

Then broke.

For a split second the thing rose halfway from the water.

Gray skin.

Massive shoulders.

Whiskered face.

Eyes reflecting the moonlight.

Another shape moved behind it.

Then another.

Thor whispered quietly,

"Well… that's worse than I hoped."

The creatures slid back beneath the water.

But the surface did not settle.

Movement continued beneath the moonlight.

Multiple shapes circling slowly.

Magni exhaled.

"That's not one."

"No," Shane said quietly.

"It isn't."

Oscar immediately stepped back and closed his eyes briefly.

The system interface opened in his mind.

He focused.

"Saul," he said quietly.

"We found them."

Sanctuary — System Alert

Inside the operations building, Saul was halfway through reviewing supply reports when the system notification appeared.

Oscar's message opened across his internal display.

He read it once.

Then again.

The description was short.

But it was enough.

Aquatic humanoids.

Multiple individuals.

Extremely violent.

Saul leaned back slowly.

"Well," he muttered under his breath.

"That's new."

He immediately opened the command relay.

The system transmitted the warning.

System Broadcast

BIOLOGICAL THREAT DETECTED

Aquatic humanoid entities confirmed

Multiple sightings

Highly aggressive

Avoid rivers, reservoirs, and lake shores until further notice.

The alert reached Roberts and Cory within seconds.

Saul closed the system interface and stood.

"Ben," he called.

Ben looked up from the communication console.

"What's up?"

"Get everyone to the operations room."

Ben frowned.

"That serious?"

Saul nodded.

"Yeah."

"Looks like we just found the thing killing the boats."

Ten Minutes Later

The room filled quickly.

Emma arrived first, wiping her hands on a cloth after leaving the clinic.

Gary followed.

Then Vargas, Ivar, Carla, and several others.

Frigg entered quietly and took a seat near the table.

Olaf arrived last.

The moment he stepped through the doorway, he looked directly at Saul.

"What happened?"

Saul didn't waste time.

"Oscar's group confirmed the anomaly."

He activated the projection map.

Arizona appeared across the table surface.

"Humanoid aquatic creatures."

Gary blinked.

"I'm sorry — what?"

Saul zoomed in on the reservoir region.

"They come out of the water."

Emma frowned.

"Like amphibians?"

"No."

Saul paused.

"More like… mutated humans."

The room went silent.

Frigg leaned forward slightly.

"How many?"

"Oscar saw several."

Saul tapped another marker.

"Roberts' patrol encountered one earlier near a river."

Gary rubbed the back of his neck.

"So they're spreading through water systems."

"Possibly."

Vargas frowned.

"That means rivers… lakes… reservoirs…"

"Exactly."

Saul looked toward Olaf.

"This may escalate quickly."

Olaf had been silent until now.

His eyes were fixed on the map.

Something in his expression changed.

Frigg noticed immediately.

"You feel something."

Olaf nodded slowly.

"Yes."

He placed one hand on the edge of the table.

"The weave tightened again."

Saul looked up.

"You mean fate?"

"Yes."

Olaf looked toward the distant mountains beyond Sanctuary.

"This is not natural chaos."

Gary crossed his arms.

"You thinking Apex Negativa?"

Olaf shook his head.

"No."

"Something else."

He straightened slowly.

"The mountains must know."

Frigg tilted her head.

"Ullr and Freyr."

"Yes."

Olaf stepped away from the table.

"They guard the wild places."

"If these creatures spread through rivers…"

"…they will reach the mountains eventually."

Saul nodded.

"Good call."

Olaf paused near the door.

Then he looked back at the group.

"For now," he said quietly,

"warn every settlement near water."

Saul already had the system open again.

"Working on it."

Olaf stepped outside into the evening air.

The wind moved softly through the pines around Sanctuary.

Somewhere far beyond the ridges, the Appalachian forests waited in quiet darkness.

Ullr and Freyr needed to hear this.

And quickly.

Military Node

Roberts read the message silently.

Vali stood nearby.

"So it wasn't just us."

Roberts shook his head slowly.

"No."

Vidar looked toward the river outside the base.

"They move through water."

Roberts nodded grimly.

"Then every river becomes a road."

Great Lakes Watch

Cory's system chimed.

He read the warning.

Then looked out across Lake Erie.

Karl stepped beside him.

"What is it?"

Cory handed him the note he had written.

Karl read it carefully.

"Multiple aquatic mutants."

Tyr frowned.

"That explains the boats."

Njord stared out across the lake.

"The water has been warning us."

Cory folded his arms.

"Looks like it was right."

Back at the Reservoir

The water moved again.

One of the creatures surfaced briefly near the reeds.

Its whiskers twitched in the moonlight.

Then it slipped silently beneath the surface.

Thor shook his head.

"Yeah."

"That's definitely not natural."

Freya looked toward the mountains beyond the reservoir.

"Where did they come from?"

Johnny John answered quietly.

"Something made them."

Shane studied the shoreline carefully.

Then he pointed toward the hills beyond the reservoir.

"Tracks."

Magni followed his gaze.

A muddy trail cut up the slope where something heavy had climbed from the water before.

Freya looked closer.

"That trail goes somewhere."

Thor grinned slightly.

"Well."

"That solves tomorrow."

Oscar nodded.

"Yeah."

"Something tells me that trail leads to the answer."

Shane looked toward the dark hills above the reservoir.

"Then that's where we start."

And somewhere in those hills—

hidden beneath rusting fences and broken concrete—

the abandoned research facility waited in the darkness.

"If you enjoyed Shane's journey, please drop a Power Stone! It helps the Common Sense Party grow."
