Chapter 21: Bizarre Story Characters

The isolation barrier gradually faded and vanished within a couple of seconds.

The monsters clinging to the ceiling let out a roar and lunged at Roland in unison.

"Have the Ghouls in this world all turned into such hideous freaks? How ugly!"

Rather than calling these monsters Ghouls who retained their human forms like in the anime, it would be more accurate to say they were Lickers straight out of a Resident Evil movie.

At first glance, they looked like skinned gorillas, with two sets of sharp fangs in their mouths and claws like curved blades on their hands and feet.

Roland looked directly at their descending, hideous forms and slowly exhaled a long breath of white mist.

The white mist dispersed, turning into a thick layer of frost fog that shrouded his entire figure.

Within seconds of the "Ghouls" plunging into the frost fog, all their roars vanished.

It was as if an even more terrifying monster had opened its maw within the frost fog, devouring them all.

Sheathing his long blade, Roland stepped out of the frost fog and murmured:

"Their strength is between an A-rated Ghoul and an S-rated Ghoul! Moreover, the rc cells in their bodies have strong vitality and corrosiveness. Hmm, I really came to the right world!"

Behind him, the frost fog gradually dissipated. The benches were still benches, and the podium was still a podium; there wasn't a single trace of battle, nor any sign that those monsters had ever existed.

Roland pushed open the church doors and immediately saw that twisted creation towering into the clouds.

The Nest, piled high with mutated flesh, had countless egg-like tissues on its surface. Just one look was enough to cause physical discomfort.

Roland took a sniper rifle from his storage space and used the scope for a more detailed observation. He discovered that the "Monstrosity Ghouls" from earlier had hatched from those egg-like tissues.

"If I'd known, I wouldn't have eaten before entering the dungeon."

Roland grumbled, looking away. He then saw a faint blue figure leaping between buildings, rapidly approaching his location.

"Whoa! Such murderous intent, how scary!

From his appearance, he seems to have a human form. He should be a real Ghoul, not one of those Monstrosities, right?"

Bang!

"I'll catch him and ask what's going on!"

A brass bullet, imbued with electromagnetic force, shot out from the muzzle, blowing off the opponent's legs in mid-air as he sped along.

Stowing the sniper rifle, Roland walked over.

As soon as he approached, the faint blue figure instantly sprang up from the ground, swinging his Ukaku like a venomous snake lunging for his face.

The Ukaku, as the name suggests, has its Kagune-sac storing rc cells located near the tailbone; when needed, the Kagune extends through the skin in the form of a tail.

Among the four types of Kagune, it is the one with relatively balanced abilities, suitable for mid-range combat. It maintains a certain level of attack, defense, and speed, with no decisive weaknesses but also no outstanding features or advantages.

Roland dodged the strike by sidestepping, pinned the Ukaku to the concrete with his blade, then charged forward, slamming his hand onto the opponent's face and pinning him to the ground.

"Just behave yourself!"

He exhaled frost energy onto the opponent's torso. Before long, a layer of ice crystals froze him to the ground, leaving him unable to move.

"What a piece of sh—"

Roland stepped on the opponent's mouth, wagged his finger, and stopped him:

"Sorry! I have a pretty strong urge to vomit right now, so let's not mention anything related to excrement, okay?"

Roland scanned him up and down and noticed the opponent was covered in a layer of biological armor. The main part was a faint blue gelatinous tissue, while other parts looked like flesh and bone, yet were something else entirely.

"Alright! Although I've already guessed your identity, I still want to confirm it!"

Roland reached out and removed the opponent's mask. Unsurprisingly, a fairly handsome face appeared before his eyes.

"It really is you, Nishio Nishiki!"

Nishio Nishiki, nicknamed "Serpent," was an S-rated Ghoul and could be considered a member of the protagonist's group.

Although he was somewhat distrustful and hostile toward humans in the early stages, his attitude softened significantly under the influence of the protagonist Kaneki Ken and his human girlfriend Nishino Kimi. He was one of the Ghouls who was relatively friendly toward humans.

"Can you tell me why you attacked me?"

Roland asked softly.

"Damn... monster!"

The words came through Nishio Nishiki's gritted teeth, leaving Roland stunned.

Who? Monster? Me?

Why don't you take a look at yourself before saying that?

Just as Roland wanted to press for more information, a flurry of red "flying feathers" attacked, forcing him to retreat and distance himself from Nishio Nishiki on the ground.

While retreating, Roland found an opportunity to pull out the nichirin blade that was pinning Nishio Nishiki's Ukaku.

Looking up, he saw another Ghoul also covered in biological armor, with black and red "wings" on his back, gliding down from the air to land in front of Nishio Nishiki.

"Damned monster! You will pay for the dozen innocent lives you've taken!"

The newcomer roared at Roland while shielding Nishio Nishiki with his arms, shouting nonsensical things.

"That shape of Ukaku... is it Kirishima Ayato?"

Recognizing the character's identity through some obvious traits, Roland asked tentatively, "Hey! Can you understand what I'm saying?"

Roland's attempt to talk to Kirishima Ayato was met with another barrage of Ukaku attacks.

"Something's wrong! It's not just the inability to communicate; it seems what they see is different from what I see!"

Roland pondered the strangeness of the situation while parrying the dense "flying feather" attacks with his blade.

Just then, reinforcements for the two Ghouls arrived on the battlefield.

It was a group of One-Eyed Ghouls who looked identical in appearance and clothing, as if they were clones. As soon as they appeared, they charged forward, assisting Kirishima Ayato in his attack on Roland.

Following closely behind were the "Monstrosity Ghouls" that had previously occupied the church. They seemed only to be assisting the One-Eyed Ghouls in surrounding the battlefield, with no intention of attacking together.

When he noticed Nishio Nishiki, lying on the ground, calling one of the "Monstrosities" beside him "Kimi" in an affectionate tone, Roland's suspicions were confirmed.

His gaze sharpened as Roland shifted from defense to offense, leaping into the air and spinning to build momentum.

After his nichirin blade traced an arc of light, it slashed directly at one of the One-Eyed Ghouls in front of him.

Dismounted Hawk Water Wheel!

The One-Eyed Ghoul expressionlessly crossed his arms to block, only to be sliced clean in half.

"Since communication is impossible, I might as well just kill them all!"
