Chapter 8 - Wait... why ?

The cool air of her bedroom was a relief after the oppressive heat outside. She pulled her knees up to her chest, propping her phone against them. The screen illuminated her face in the darkening room.

For days, she had kept the strange, overlapping layers of her life compartmentalized. But after everything that had happened this afternoon—the screenshot from her best friend, the shift in his messages, and the persistent shadow across the street—the weight of it all was too much to carry alone.

She tapped the chat icon. There was no one else she trusted more with the messy truth.

[06:12 PM] Can I tell you something crazy? My life feels like a bizarre teen drama right now.

The response was almost instantaneous, a reassuring anchor.

[06:12 PM] I am always down for drama, especially yours. What happened? Are you okay?

She took a deep breath, her thumbs flying across the keyboard as she laid out the pieces of her reality, stripped of names but heavy with honesty.

[06:15 PM] Remember that guy I told you I used to have a massive crush on? The one from my third-period class? Well, my best friend just texted me. Apparently, he's spent the last twenty-four hours completely simping for her in her DMs. A month ago, I would have been devastated. Today, I literally told her she could have him.

[06:16 PM] Wow. Direct hit to the ego, but a massive win for growth. Look at you, completely unfazed.

[06:16 PM] It's true though! I realized I don't care at all. But... that's not even the craziest part.

She paused, staring at the blinking cursor. Mentioning the stalker always made it feel more real, more suffocating. But she needed to get it out.

[06:18 PM] There's this other guy. I haven't mentioned him because it's creepy, but he's been following me around for weeks. Leaving notes, showing up where I am. Even today, when I went to the corner store, he was just standing there across the street, watching me. It's like he refuses to go away, no matter how much I ignore him.

The typing bubbles appeared immediately, disappearing and reappearing as if he were deleting and rewriting his thoughts in a rush.

[06:19 PM] Wait, that's not drama, that's unsafe. Are you somewhere secure right now? Did he follow you home? Do you need to tell someone?

The sudden, fierce protectiveness in his words sent a ripple of warmth through her chest. It wasn't just casual curiosity; he genuinely cared about her safety.

[06:21 PM] I'm safe inside my house, locked the door as soon as I got in. He didn't follow me all the way. It's just this lingering shadow I can't seem to shake. It's exhausting.

[06:22 PM] Please promise me you'll stay aware of your surroundings. Don't walk alone if you can help it. I hate thinking about you feeling trapped like that, especially when you should be celebrating the end of exams.

[06:23 PM] I promise. I'm being careful. Honestly, the only reason I'm not completely losing my mind over all of this is because... well, because of you.

She held her breath the moment the text sent, her heart hammering against her ribs. It was the most vulnerable she had ever been with him.

The silence stretched for a full minute. Then, the text appeared.

[06:25 PM] You have no idea how much that means to me. I know we're just voices on a screen right now, but you're the reality I actually look forward to. Let the old crush chase someone else, and let the shadow stay outside. I'm right here.

Looking at the words, the anxiety of the afternoon completely dissolved. The chaos of her physical world—the boy who didn't see her, and the boy who saw too much—faded into irrelevance. Right there, in the quiet safety of their chat, she knew exactly where she wanted to be.
