Chapter 53 - CHAPTER FIFTY THREE

Part of the reason was that military doctors were required to be on the battlefield four years into their studies, and Yu Weiwei would only be twenty-four by that time, not yet considered an adult. Sending a minor to the battlefield was a crime, after all, and no one wanted to take responsibility for such a thing.

They could have waited until he became an adult before sending him to the battlefield, but the main problem was the fact that Yu Weiwei had an F-level mental power. Most military doctors required a mental power level of C or above because they needed to use their mental power to soothe the soldiers and help them recover from the mental exhaustion caused by operating their mechas.

Unfortunately, Yu Weiwei couldn't do any of that with his past mental power level, so his only option was to enter the Mecha Repair Department, whose entry requirements were much lower compared to those of the other departments.

Under normal circumstances, Yu Weiwei could have transferred to an agricultural course because of his Nature Authority. With such an ability, he would undoubtedly have been welcomed with open arms by the agricultural department. After all, someone with an authority capable of nurturing and purifying plants was practically a walking treasure to those researchers.

However, Yu Weiwei was determined to live a salted-fish life. He had absolutely no intention of turning himself into a precious research subject for a group of scientists who would probably never let him have a moment of peace.

After all, transferring to the agricultural course meant that those research scientists would be able to use him however they wanted, especially because of his Nature Authority and his crops. They would probably have him working from morning until night, conducting one experiment after another, and if he wasn't careful, even his precious sleeping time would be taken away from him.

Just thinking about such a future was enough to make Yu Weiwei shudder.

In comparison, staying in the Mecha Repair Department was much more suitable for his plans. Once he graduated, instead of being assigned to the military as a repairman responsible for maintaining the mechas of soldiers on the battlefield, he would become a civilian repairman. Such an assignment could not be changed unless he personally wanted it to be, which meant that as long as he kept his head down and did his job properly, he could live a leisurely life without anyone dragging him to the battlefield.

After all, most civilians didn't even own a mecha, and even if they did, the damage their mechas sustained was nowhere near as severe as the damage to those used by soldiers. Civilian mechas were generally used for transportation, work, and other daily activities, so their repair requirements were naturally much less demanding.

In other words, he could spend his days repairing a few mechas, earning enough money to support himself, and returning home to sleep whenever he wanted.

What a wonderful life!

Unfortunately, hearing about the upcoming inter-orbit tournaments, Yu Weiwei knew that his peaceful life was about to be disrupted.

After all, he was an SSS-level powerhouse. To be honest, if it had been anyone else in his position, they would probably have been forced to change departments long ago, if not outright coerced or brainwashed into agreeing to it.

An SSS-level powerhouse was simply too valuable to be allowed to waste their talents in a department that had little to do with their abilities. Even if the person in question wanted nothing more than to spend their days doing ordinary work, there would always be someone who believed they knew what was best for them.

However, Yu Weiwei was a little different.

For one thing, he didn't have any family members who could force him to do anything. His uncle Yu's family were currently either in jail, exiled, or on the run, while the blood relations between him and his other relatives had become so diluted that it was difficult to determine whether they were truly related to him in the first place.

In other words, there was practically no one from his family who could interfere with his decisions, even if they wanted to.

Another reason was that his relationship with the royal family had prevented many people who might have had such intentions from taking action. Although they had been nagging Caspian about the matter, hoping he would persuade Yu Weiwei to transfer to a more suitable department, their efforts had achieved little.

Caspian, however, had absolutely no intention of forcing Yu Weiwei to do anything.

Firstly, Yu Weiwei was extremely stubborn. If there was something he didn't want to do, no amount of persuasion would make him agree, and trying to force him would only make things worse. Anyone who had spent enough time with him would understand that it was much easier to let him do what he wanted than to try to change his mind.

Secondly, Yu Weiwei had already contributed far more to the empire than anyone could imagine, and most of those contributions had been made quietly, behind everyone's backs. Even if the empire had not fully realised the extent of what he had done, Caspian was well aware that Yu Weiwei had already given them more than enough.

Therefore, if Yu Weiwei wanted to spend his days in the Mecha Repair Department, then so be it. It wasn't as though the empire would collapse simply because an SSS-level powerhouse wanted to live a comfortable life.

Besides, Caspian had no intention of making Yu Weiwei unhappy just because other people couldn't bear to see such a precious talent being underutilised.

"You know, I really don't understand what you're doing here. You have both Dimension Authority and Nature Authority, yet neither of them seems to have anything to do with our department." Yule asked, looking at Yu Weiwei with a confused expression.

He had been wondering about this for quite some time, but even after observing Yu Weiwei for so long, he still couldn't understand what was going on in his head.

With those two authorities, Yu Weiwei could have easily chosen a department that was more suitable for him. Instead, he had stubbornly remained in the Mecha Repair Department, where neither of his abilities seemed particularly useful.

"It is precisely because I have them that I'm staying here," Yu Weiwei muttered, his head pressed against the table as his eyes stared blankly at the scenery outside the window looking sleepy.

He had no intention of explaining himself any further. After all, what was the point of telling them that he wanted to avoid trouble when they would probably never understand just how troublesome it was to be someone with his abilities?

The two of them were left speechless by his response.

To be honest, they had observed Yu Weiwei even before the murder case, and back then, he had been a very hardworking person. He was the kind of student who was always busy with something, constantly studying or practising, even when everyone else had already gone off to rest.

Unfortunately, his hard work had rarely been noticed because of the nasty rumours circulating around the school. Most people had either ignored his efforts or assumed that he was merely trying to attract attention, and very few had bothered to look beyond the rumours to see what kind of person he really was.

But the current Yu Weiwei was an entirely different story.

To put it nicely, he was very laid-back. To put it bluntly, he was incredibly lazy.

He could spend an entire class resting his head on the table, stare out of the window as though his soul had already left his body, or sometimes drifting off to a Dreamland and look as if he couldn't be bothered to care about anything happening around him.

And yet, despite his seemingly complete lack of enthusiasm, he was still the number one student in the class.

This was perhaps the most frustrating part.

He barely seemed to put any effort into his studies anymore, but his results remained far ahead of everyone else's. Sometimes, his classmates couldn't help but wonder whether he was even taking his studies seriously or simply treating the entire academic system as a game he had already completed.

Lisa, in particular, couldn't help wondering whether the hardworking personality Yu Weiwei had displayed in the past had been nothing more than a ruse. Perhaps he had deliberately made himself look like an ordinary student who achieved good results through hard work rather than someone who was naturally gifted.

Or perhaps he had simply been working hard behind everyone's backs, hiding his true abilities while allowing the rumours to distort people's perception of him.

The more she thought about it, the more confused she became.

If Yu Weiwei could hear her thoughts, he would undoubtedly have snorted in disdain.

A ruse?

What a joke!

In his first life, he had practically desensitised himself to everything related to mechas because he wanted to remain by Si Tian's side at all times.
