There she stood. At the edge of it, the inferno.
Wild. Divine. Precise.
And unmistakably his.
"So, this is how he destroyed our world…" Sinephilim whispered.
Part of her ached with guilt. She had blamed him. For chasing Aucteros. For losing control. For destroying their world.
This wasn't insanity.
This was will.
Veronica ran up beside her, shielding her face from the heat.
"Sin!" She called. "That's Willow, right?"
"Yes," Sinephilim nodded. "He's burning, everything." She paused. "How are you feeling? The fear, did it- "
"I don't want to talk about it," Veronica snapped.
(So, she was consumed too.)
"I can't get close enough to stop him," Sinephilim admitted.
Veronica fell quiet, calculating.
Then Veronica spoke. "My blessing, Elixir. Maybe it could make you resistant to his flames."
"Worth a try. Test it."
Veronica bit her lip, drew blood, and swallowed. Then she reached into the fire and flinched back. "Damn. That's hot."
(It's not a normal flame.)
Willow's magic was not just fire. It was controlled destruction.
Every flicker carved from emotion. Every ember his heartbeat. Terrifying. And beautiful.
"No… nooo…"
A broken voice rang out.
They both turned.
There standing, a woman cradled herself at the edge of the blaze, barely breathing. A victim of the fear world.
"A Worldeater," Veronica said softly.
Sinephilim tense. "What's wrong?"
Veronica frowned. "If this is the Worldeater… and this world was never truly threatened…"
She glanced toward the fire.
"…Then why were we sent here?"
A chill crept down Sinephilim's spine.
BANG.
A bolt tore through the woman's skull. Her body collapsed.
Golden soul-light erupted, ribbons of energy spiraling toward the figure walking through the smoke. Absorbing into the armor.
Heavy armor. Steady steps. Steam hissing from joints.
Apex Nova.
Silent. Helmet focused. Watching the fire.
Sinephilim spun.
Behind her, the blaze faded. Willow stood alone in the ashes of his spell. The fear world cried, and Willow couldn't care less.
And above him-
The Worldheart, exposed. Beating. Glowing, a soul torn from reality.
"Apex, why did you kill her?" Sinephilim demanded. "Your mission was to observe Willow!"
Apex lifted his head.
His voice, empty, metallic, wrong.
"The mission failed. Inmate F173 Willow deceased. New objective, destroy the Worldheart."
Veronica stepped forward, furious. "Willow's alive! He's right there!"
"Commencing objective."
BANG.
A shot cracked the air.
The Worldheart split. Crumbling, dying.
Reality bent.
"Sister!" Sinephilim screamed-
Shadows swallowed them.
****
Back at the Tea Table.
Shadows coiled around Sinephilim like smoke as she slammed into the seat at the black table.
Willow sat next to her. Veronica is on the other side, trembling.
Darkness leaned forward, panting, her composure fractured. Tea spilled across the table. Her hands shook as she gripped the cup.
"You know…" she said, breathless, "pulling three of you out without the local gods' help isn't easy."
She coughed once, shadows rippling.
"Apex betrayed us," Sinephilim snapped.
Darkness didn't flinch. "An unfortunate side effect of fear, sister. Sometimes you become the thing you feared the most."
With a flick of her fingers, the mess vanished. A new teacup appeared. She sipped it calmly.
"I think I know what really happened," Veronica said, voice sharp.
Darkness paused. You could not see her glare, but it was felt.
"Go on."
Veronica folded her arms. "The Gods of the fear world wanted us. Our fear. That's why we were sent there. It was a trap."
"Oh?" Darkness tilted her head. "That's quite the accusation, second life."
Sinephilim clenched her jaw. "She's right. The Worldeater was bait. The fear gods were not threatened; they fed on us instead."
Veronica nodded. "They used you to lure us in and you knew it."
Sinephilim turned to Darkness. "So why send us?"
Still no flinch. No apology.
"It was a gamble," she said flatly. "The fear world is strong. If even one of you succeeded, it was worth it. Their power was… considerable."
"And if one of us died?" Sinephilim hissed.
"If one or two perished…" Darkness exhaled, "so be it. I am a true Goddess, sister. We do not feel emotions like you do. I saw potential gain. That was enough."
Willow stood suddenly.
"I don't believe you."
That made Darkness twitch.
"You sent us there," he said, voice shaking. "Same as the spirit beast trial. Same as the romance world, you are the one who sent me there. You've been testing us this whole time."
Darkness swirled her tea. "I couldn't leave you floating with all that divine power, now could I?"
(Willow… you make sense! Sorry for assuming all you cared about was Rhenvar.)
"No, Willow's right," Sinephilim said. "This wasn't just a trap. It was a test. Another trial. You never stopped."
For the first time Darkness felt different.
Off.
"You three really are… perceptive." Her cup clanked onto the plate. "I'll admit one thing."
"And that is?" Veronica said.
Darkness's eyes gleamed.
"I didn't expect soldier boy to break so easily and destroy the world."
Silence.
There was a new threat now.
Apex Nova.
And he wasn't a soldier anymore.
He was something far more dangerous.
