Veronica Venenatus stepped into the new world…
…and instantly felt unwritten.
The air smelt like ink. The sky above was parchment, words floating like smoke. Everything around her was a story, her story. But something was wrong.
She blinked.
The words rearranged.
She read them aloud, trembling:
"Felicia, the noble princess of prophecy, protector of the beast spirits, savior of the Worldheart…"
(No.)
(That wasn't how it happened.)
That was her chapter. Her trial. Her fate.
"Felicia, the brave, who outwitted the spirit serpent Syrethe."
That was her bond.
"Felicia, the one Rhenvar trusted. The one Sinephilim called cunning. The one who Theodore truly and always loved."
She clutched her chest.
The Worldheart pulsed beneath her feet, pages turning rapidly, each one overwriting the last. There was no mention of Veronica.
"No, no, stop!" She screamed, trying to claw at the sky, trying to rip the story back into her hands.
But the story had already moved on.
The world reshaped itself.
Suddenly she was back in a grand throne room of her kingdom.
A grand celebration. The spirit beast bowing. Fenrus. Syrethe. Urithax's flame curling at the corners.
At the center stood Felicia.
In Veronica's stolen dark violet dress.
Crowned.
Beloved.
Alive.
"That's not yours!" Veronica snarled, rushing forward.
She shoved past nobles, spirits, even Rhen-
But no one saw her.
No one heard her.
She stepped onto the throne, right up to Felicia and tried to grab her dress.
Her hand went through.
Felicia turned to the audience.
"We did it," she said, radiant. "Together."
They cheered.
Even Willow.
Even Sinephilim.
Even Syrethe.
"This was meant for me," Veronica whispered, "You helped save our world but I earned my spirit beast, my new friend."
"And yet," Felicia said softly, suddenly looking directly at her, "it's all mine, just like before."
"Loved. Trusted. Chosen." Felicia's smile widened with sinister intent.
Veronica's knees hit the floor.
Everything she had built, her second life, her agency, her identity, replaced by a girl who just happened to be born a princess.
A girl with a future.
A girl loved by all.
"You don't belong," the world whispered. "You're just a plot device. A villain with ambition so the princess could die."
"You were never meant to win."
"You were never real. You're just a book character."
The pages burned around her.
She screamed as she burned with them.
She tried to write her name into the fire.
But her fingers melted and pain came with it.
Syrethe's voice, once calm and sly, was now hollow:
"You claimed me the spirit beast of wisdom. So here's some, history forgets those who aren't supposed to exist. You tried to rewrite your fate. But fate when written also has an eraser."
Veroinca collapsed.
Alone.
The ash rained down in words she didn't recognize.
A foreign language.
Another author.
And then a hand.
Not Felicia's.
Not Syrethe's.
But her own.
Burned. Bleeding. Refusing to let go.
She grabbed it. Pulled.
Dragged herself out of the ashes.
And in the smoke, carved one name with her last strength:
"Venenatus," A voice mocked. "You asked what happened to Theo after your death."
The hand that pulled her out now grabbed her face.
"He died from a broken heart."
In a single motion, her flesh tore from her bones. She knelt down in pain. Trying to feel her face that was ripped off.
Her pools of blood filled both hands. Veronica was shaking. Then-
a shutter in the world echoed.
Veronica woke up at the base of a broken black statue. Her hands trembled.
She wasn't sure what was real anymore.
But she was here. She breathed and composed herself.
"I am Veronica Venenatus!" She screamed.
Then a voice asked.
"Are you sure? Are you the only one?"
Something inside her broke. The darkness engulfed her.
"If Felicia was Nej reborn… then what was I? Another echo? How many of me are scattered across these worlds?" Veronica started breaking down.
(I'm not special.)
(I don't have control.)
A flicker appeared in the distance. Red and burning.
She felt its warmth.
(Willow…)
She stood up and ran to the fire.
"I may not be real, but I still have friends!"
(Friends I can trust, friends I made in my second chance at life.)
