In an instant, the four of them stared at each other. The dorm supervisor's scream, followed by the abruptly ended call, sent their minds racing.
Luna Nash watched until the phone screen went completely dark before swallowing hard.
In the darkness, the GULP of her swallow was exceptionally clear.
"Wh... What's going on?" Joy Fischer began to tremble as well.
"Did something bad happen?"
Jane Sterling sighed and was just about to speak—
"Help! Help!!"
—when a bloodcurdling cry for help pierced their ears.
The voice didn't sound far away—it was right outside their door.
Their dorm, Room 303, was the first one in the corner right at the top of the stairs, very close to the stairwell entrance.
So Jane Sterling suspected the scream had come from the stairwell.
Immediately after the cry for help came the sound of something—or someone—falling.
It sounded like someone had fallen down the stairs.
Joy Fischer and Susan Quinn were jolted by the sound.
