Chapter 7 - Chapter 7: Grandma's Ghost? What's Going On?

It was just as Sharon Shelby had said. Even if she didn't do it for the sake of the two people who had raised her for eighteen years, she had to consider her grandmother, who had always been so good to her.

So, she would go to the hospital with them and see just what kind of scheme they were up to.

Now that she had the system, she wasn't afraid of their threats at all.

If things went south, she would just run for it. She would absolutely not let herself get into a dangerous situation.

Comforting herself with these thoughts, Jane Sterling's expression softened. She looked at the two of them and gave a slight nod.

Charles Sterling and Sharon Shelby watched her with hopeful expressions. When they saw Jane's small nod, their faces instantly broke into wide smiles.

"That's more like it! This is our good girl. Come on, come on, let's get in the car. It's so hot out here, don't wander around and get heatstroke!"

As she spoke, Sharon put an arm around Jane, affectionately guiding her toward the car.

But Jane still harbored resentment toward them, a boundary that would never be broken under any circumstances.

'This doesn't mean I've forgiven them,' she thought, 'and I don't believe they have any genuine affection for me. It's all just exploitation.'

So, she subtly dodged Sharon's hand and went straight to the back seat of the car.

During the entire ride, Charles and Sharon were obsequiously flattering Jane, as if deliberately trying to curry favor with her.

Once they arrived at the hospital, everything was just as Jane had expected. Their ultimate goal was still for her to donate her bone marrow.

The moment she stepped into the hospital, Jane shivered.

The air conditioning was cranked up high, but what she felt wasn't just the chill in the air; it was a coldness that seemed to emanate from her very bones.

Jane had read many horror novels before, and she knew that places like hospitals were gathering spots for a lot of yin energy.

For people in poor health, spending too much time in a hospital could have a negative effect on their bodies.

Instantly, upon entering the hospital lobby, Jane saw a crowd of bustling people, and interspersed among them were some nearly transparent ghosts.

Many of them had terrifying appearances, floating about with dazed, expressionless faces.

Jane tried her best to overcome her fear and walked toward the VIP ward.

Just then, a doctor had finished examining the person inside.

Seeing Charles Sterling and Sharon Shelby approach, he sighed helplessly and shook his head.

The moment Charles saw the doctor's reaction, he panicked.

"Doctor, how is my daughter?"

The doctor's tone was regretful. "She's already developed various complications, and her constitution isn't very good. If a suitable bone marrow match isn't found soon, it's possible..."

The doctor left his sentence unfinished, gave the couple a pitying look, and walked out of the room.

Hearing the doctor's words, tears instantly welled up in Sharon's eyes and streamed down her face.

She rushed forward and hugged Mimi's body tightly. "My child, my dear child! Your father and I finally found you after so long. How can you bear to leave us like this?!"

Charles Sterling stood to the side, his heart heavy.

He glanced at the expressionless Jane standing at the doorway, trying hard to suppress his anger.

'Why?'

'Why is it that after being raised so well by them for eighteen years, Jane Sterling gets to be so healthy and alive?'

'While their own biological daughter was trafficked as a child, lived a hard life, and now that they've finally found her, she's contracted this terrible disease?'

'It's not fair.'

At that moment, resentment festered in Charles's heart.

'If only he could trade the life of this adopted daughter for the life of his biological daughter.'

Meanwhile, Jane stood stunned at the door to the hospital room. If you looked closely, you could even see her trembling slightly.

That was because as soon as Jane entered the room, she discovered it was practically bustling with activity.

The VIP wards were usually single rooms, some even with private bathrooms.

However, in terms of size, it was nothing compared to the super-deluxe ward on the 34th floor.

Looking at the various ghosts floating lively in the air, Jane was at a loss for words.

It seemed she was already becoming somewhat immune.

The ghosts before her didn't seem all that terrifying. At worst, their faces were a little pale, and they were bleeding a bit.

Compared to the ghosts in horror movies, they were hardly scary at all.

They floated densely throughout the room. Some were even lying on Mimi's hospital bed, pressing down tightly on her body.

When they saw Charles Sterling and Sharon Shelby enter, the ghosts in the room instantly bared their fangs.

Jane could clearly feel the surrounding air grow even more sinister and cold.

She watched as a few of the ghosts drifted directly over to Charles.

They perched on his shoulders and clung to his back, looking as if they wanted to tear him apart and devour him.

Just as all these ghosts were gathering around Charles, Jane saw a familiar figure.

No, it wasn't a human figure—it was a ghostly one.

She saw her grandmother, who had been dead for many years, peering from the bathroom doorway, staring resentfully at Sharon, who was weeping over the hospital bed.

Jane was completely stunned.

'What's going on?'

'Her grandmother had passed away years ago. According to how it's portrayed on TV, she should have been reincarnated long ago.'

'How could she possibly be here?'

Her grandmother floated from the bathroom doorway to Charles's side, getting right up in his face and staring at him fiercely.

The visual impact was simply overwhelming.

"AHH—"

Jane let out a terrified scream before quickly clamping her hands over her mouth.

The scream startled Sharon out of her tearful state, and Charles, his face dark, also turned to look at her.

Seeing Jane's detached and unconcerned attitude, Sharon became beside herself with rage.

She couldn't stop herself from unleashing a tirade.

"Are you gloating? You know your sister doesn't have much time left, and you can still stand there with that expression? If you had just donated your bone marrow, your sister could be living a happy life in this world, just like you."

"How can you be so heartless?! It's just a bone marrow donation, it's not like it would kill you! You're truly not a child of the Sterling Family, selfish to the bone!"

Hearing Sharon's words, Charles seemed to feel emboldened.

He shot up from the bedside, grabbed Jane's arm, and dragged her over to the bed.

"Look at your sister! She's lying here with her life hanging in the balance! What right do you have to stand there perfectly fine? Why isn't it you lying in that hospital bed?"

"If you have any gratitude for the eighteen years we spent raising you, then you'll obediently donate your bone marrow. After that, we'll leave you alone for good. But if you insist on not donating..."
