Xiao Furen wasn't lying. He really hadn't brought back anything valuable. Inside several burlap sacks, besides bundles of dried vegetables, were various kinds of beans the family rarely ate. The mother and daughter finished sorting through them in no time.
Even so, this made the old lady incredibly happy. When you're running a household, these were the hardest things to come by. She was delighted that her son-in-law was thoughtful enough to bring them home.
"Alright, that's most of it. Xiao Wen, stop fussing about and go wash up. Get inside and rest for a bit." The old lady began to fuss over her son-in-law.
Xiao Furen didn't refuse. A full day on an oxcart was indeed no easy ride. But he held onto his wife's hand and wouldn't let go, clearly signaling that he wanted her to go back to their room and lie down with him.
The old lady saw but pretended she didn't. She was happy that her daughter and son-in-law had such a good relationship.
