"What's wrong?"
Miao Cuifen looked at Shen Nian, then at Lu Cheng, not quite understanding the situation.
Shen Nian held back a laugh. "It's nothing, Mom. I've already talked to him. You can go make the bed now!"
"Alright, I'll go get it ready then!"
With that, Miao Cuifen left, thoughtfully closing the door for Shen Nian and Lu Cheng on her way out.
Shen Nian turned to look at Lu Cheng. His expression was still frozen in the same way it had been when he heard what Miao Cuifen said. 'Anyone who didn't know better would think he'd been terribly wronged!'
Miao Cuifen wasn't letting Lu Cheng sleep in Shen Nian's room because she had a problem with him. It was because of a local custom: a married daughter who returned to her maiden home could not sleep in the same bed as her husband.
In later generations, perhaps few people would still follow such a custom, but in this era, and in a rural village at that, everyone naturally abided by tradition.
