The girl instinctively kept squeezing the trigger.
Amidst the hail of gunfire, Peter, who had already lunged forward, froze in mid-air before curling into a ball and crashing to the ground.
A hit.
The girl didn't hesitate for a second, emptying her magazine into Peter's body on the ground.
Until Peter stopped moving.
With a roar of the engine, the pickup truck started again.
The engine was overheating. Forcing it to start again would cause irreversible damage, but that didn't mean it couldn't be driven.
Jamie slammed on the gas and roared off.
The girl hastily reloaded and emptied another magazine at the departing pickup.
CRASH! A window shattered, but the truck didn't stop, disappearing into the distance in an instant.
The girl gave chase on foot, but it was hopeless.
She looked around. The highway stretched to the horizon, with not another car in sight.
'Backup is probably still a while away.'
