Chapter 17 - Coruscant

15 BBY

Coruscant

Senator Belig's Fundraiser Event

Lieutenant Fergus Dile had spent enough months beside Senior Lieutenant Menno Coehorn that he had almost forgotten the resentment he once carried for the younger officer.

At first, he had dismissed him as another polished product of the Core, someone elevated not by hardship or achievement, but by patronage and carefully placed endorsements…. "Which was initially true unbeknownst the man".

Dile had seen plenty of them, officers who spoke so beautifully in briefing rooms and collapsed the moment reality pressed back against them.

But Menno Coehorn was not one of those men.

Again and again, during the long months aboard the Stark Harrow, Coehorn had proven himself something different. Strategic. Exacting. Charismatic without trying. Stern, yet understanding.

He dealt fairly with all subordinates alike, he listened, yet never bent simply because someone possessed higher rank. He could be sharp tongued when at times, but he was never passive, never willing to lie down and accept incompetence disguised as authority, he'd always find some way to resist, he always did.

More than once Dile had watched him solve problems that would have stalled seasoned officers like himself, Captain Milhorn and Commodore Draven from regional command.

Coehorn knew how to mediate between failures, crew disputes, navigational crises and security threats while under pressure. The young officer had a way of stepping outside the framework everyone else was trapped in and finding a door no one realized existed.

It was difficult not to respect that but he had given up resistance long ago. He had accepted the Sr Lieutenant in all aspects and they could now be called good associates.

Which was why Fergus now stood in his formal dress naval uniform, staring at the glittering towers of Coruscant through the transparisteel balcony of Senator Belig's Penthouse.

Music drifted through the air softly, cultured and expensive. Servants moved like ghosts with trays of sparkling drinks. And wealth and influence mingled in quiet conversation beneath chandeliers that probably cost more than the Harrow's yearly maintenance budget.

And he was here, a man from the outer rim attending perhaps the wealthiest event he had ever been to in his lifetime.

Coehorn had arranged it.

Nine months of successful anti piracy operations, efficient supply and prisoner transfers, and incident reports that made the Stark Harrow look like a model of Naval precision.

Menno had pulled threads Dile didn't even know existed, securing invitations not only for himself but for much of the bridge crew.

Networking, he had called it.

A chance for good officers to be seen.

A power move, it was clear and he hadn't expected it from the young Sr Lieutenant.

Promotion within the Empire did not rest solely on merit; it rested on visibility, on favor, on ensuring the right eyes connected competence with a name. Menno had stated that this was how the system worked and they'd have to adapt to it.

For the good of their future careers.

Dile spotted him across the hall.

Coehorn stood among a cluster of minor officials and corporate representatives, posture relaxed, one hand clasped behind his back while another held a glass of what seemed like Alderaanian wine.

He was smiling as he spoke to the men who were also grinning to a joke he couldn't hear.

Raith Sartha lingered nearby talking to some young beautiful lady dressed in fine silks, no doubt of noble birth .

And so too was Ensign Tenit near to his other friend , though he seemed to be less enthusiastic as he spoke conversed with an old woman that was all close in his personal space.

Dile chuckled at that before his eyes lingered back to menno.

And just as if sensing his gaze, Menno looked over. Their eyes met across the room. The senior lieutenant gave the faintest nod acknowledgment, inclusion.

"You belong here," it seemed to say.

Fergus straightened his tunic.

Perhaps he did.

A server approached with a tray. Dile took a glass, still unsure what it contained, and ventured deeper into the sea of senators, aides, industrialists, and officers who could change the course of a man's life with a sentence.

To Menno Coehorn he made a mental toast!

—- —— ——- ——-

Here's a refined version of the exchange, expanded to about 300 words, with smoother dialogue and stronger characterization while staying true to your setup.

---

"No surprise to find you here, Senior Lieutenant Coehorn."

Menno paused mid-conversation. The small circle of officials before him shifted aside as he turned toward the familiar voice.

All White.

Immaculate white, impossible to mistake.

The crisp uniform of the Imperial Security Bureau caught the light, its rows of red and blue rank plaques marking the man as a colonel.

Wullf Yularen carried himself with the quiet authority, the power of an imperial service officer who did not need to raise his voice to command obedience, the ISB uniform did and those that recognized him knew the weight he levied.

"Colonel Yularen," Menno said, a genuine smile touching his features as he extended his hand. "It's an honor."

Yularen accepted the handshake, firm and brief. "Senior Lieutenant."

"It's been some time since I last saw you," Menno added.

"Three years, I believe," Yularen replied smoothly. "A lecture at the imperial academy and the Empire Day night celebrations at the royal palace. You shorter and thinner then."

A faint chuckle rippled through the nearby listeners.

"Long deployments tend to correct that, sir," Menno said. "The Navy feeds us well when it needs results."

"And you've provided them," Yularen noted. His eyes, sharp and assessing, lingered just a moment longer than politeness required. "Your reports from the Outer Rim have circulated in certain offices. Rhelgis, Abafar, Quaith, Zygerria, Ferrix, Howland, and the many other systems and planets ",

Menno inclined his head. "I am pleased they proved satisfactory."

"Satisfactory," Yularen repeated, almost amused. "That is one word for it."

There was a subtle shift in the air now.

Yularen clasped his hands behind his back.

"I have made it a habit," the colonel continued, "to remember officers who combine combative initiative with diplomacy. It is a rare pairing."

"I try to serve the Empire to the best of my ability," Menno answered.

"Yes," Yularen said. "I can see that."

And somehow, coming from him, it sounded very much like a promise.
