Chapter 4 - ARC I: Episode 4:

🩸🪽 DARK ARCHANGEL

Episode 4:

Seo Jun woke slowly, the kind of slow that came from not wanting to open his eyes yet.

For once, his body didn't ache as badly. The cold stone beneath him felt distant, muted—like it had been softened by something warmer. He shifted slightly, then froze when he realized what that warmth was.

An arm.

Strong. Solid. Carefully placed around him, as if whoever held him was afraid of hurting him even in sleep.

Jun's breath caught.

Azael.

They must have shifted during the night. At some point, Jun had turned onto his side, and Azael—without realizing it—had drawn him closer, his body forming a quiet shield between Jun and the rest of the world.

Jun could hear his heartbeat.

Slow. Steady. Real.

For someone who claimed not to be human, Azael felt more real than anyone Jun had ever known.

Jun didn't move. He was afraid—truly afraid—that the moment would disappear if he did. Moments like this never stayed in his life. They always slipped through his fingers, leaving him with nothing but memory.

So he stayed still.

And for the first time in years, he allowed himself to feel safe.

Azael woke to warmth pressed against his chest.

For half a second, instinct screamed at him to pull away. Archangels did not wake holding mortals. They did not allow vulnerability. They did not let themselves be touched so easily.

But then he looked down.

Seo Jun was curled against him, lashes resting softly against his cheeks, lips slightly parted as he breathed. His hand rested over Azael's heart, fingers relaxed, trusting.

Azael's instincts shattered.

He did not move.

Instead, he watched.

He memorized the rise and fall of Jun's chest, the faint scars on his hands, the way his brows furrowed slightly even in sleep—as if life had taught him to remain cautious even in rest.

This fragile human trusted him.

Heaven had never trusted him with something so precious.

Carefully—so carefully—Azael lifted his free hand and brushed a strand of hair away from Jun's face. The touch was barely there, but Jun stirred, murmuring something unintelligible before settling again.

Azael's chest tightened.

If Heaven saw this…

If Heaven knew what he was feeling—

Azael's jaw clenched.

Let them come.

They woke properly when the city grew loud.

Jun stretched and immediately flushed when he realized where he was.

"Oh—uh—sorry! I didn't mean to—"

"It is fine," Azael said quickly.

Too quickly.

Jun paused. "You didn't mind?"

"No."

Jun studied his face, searching for discomfort. Finding none, his shoulders relaxed.

"Good," he said softly. "I liked waking up like that."

Azael's wings surged beneath his skin, aching to unfurl.

They spent the morning together again, but this time felt different. Closer. As if an invisible thread had tightened between them overnight.

Jun insisted on washing Azael's coat where it had gotten dirty.

"You don't have to," Azael said.

"I want to," Jun replied simply.

He scrubbed carefully, treating the worn fabric like it was something valuable. Azael watched silently, struck by how Jun treated even small things with care.

"You act like everything matters," Azael said.

Jun smiled without looking up. "Because I know what it's like when nothing does."

Those words stayed with Azael.

Later, as the sun dipped low, they sat on a rooftop Jun liked. The city stretched beneath them, glowing softly in gold and orange.

Jun hugged his knees. "You know… if you ever decide to leave, I won't stop you."

Azael turned sharply. "I have no intention of leaving."

Jun smiled faintly. "People always say that before they go."

"I am not people."

Jun glanced at him. "You really believe that, don't you?"

"Yes."

Jun's voice dropped. "Then stay."

Azael reached out, slow and deliberate, resting his hand over Jun's.

"I will."

Jun swallowed. His fingers tightened.

"If you stay," Jun whispered, "will you stay even when it gets hard?"

Azael leaned closer. "Especially then."

Their faces were close now. Too close. Jun could feel Azael's breath, steady and warm. The moment stretched, fragile and trembling with possibility.

Jun's lips parted.

Azael's hand slid instinctively to Jun's waist.

For a heartbeat, the world held its breath.

Then—

Pain lanced through Azael's skull.

Heaven screamed.

Golden symbols burned across the sky, invisible to human eyes but searingly clear to Azael.

A command.

A warning.

Azael pulled back sharply, clutching his head.

Jun jumped to his feet. "Azael! What's wrong?!"

Azael forced himself upright, wings thrashing beneath his skin. "They are accelerating."

"Who?"

"Heaven."

Jun's heart dropped. "Because of me?"

"Yes."

Jun went pale. "Then maybe I should—"

"No," Azael said fiercely, grabbing Jun's wrists. "Do not finish that thought."

Jun stared at him, eyes shining. "I don't want to be the reason you suffer."

Azael cupped his face gently. "You are the reason I endure."

Tears slipped down Jun's cheeks. "That's not fair."

"Love never is."

Above them, unseen by Jun, a ring of light formed.

A voice echoed, cold and absolute.

"Archangel Azael. Prepare for judgment."

Azael wrapped his wings—dark, massive, and real—around Jun for the first time.

Jun gasped as feathers brushed his skin.

Azael whispered against his hair, voice shaking with devotion and fury.

"No matter what happens next—

I choose you."
