Chapter 18 - Chapter 18: The Unveiling

The mask lay heavy in Scorpio's hands, woven of reeds and painted with ash. It was the first undeniable clue—proof that someone among the Zodiacs had hidden their face to guide the phantoms. The circle gathered in the square, tension thick as smoke.

Leo's golden aura blazed. "Show us the mask! Let us see whose hands shaped it."

Scorpio held it high, his voice sharp. "This was worn by the betrayer. Whoever touched it carries ash upon their skin."

Cancer's voice trembled. "Then let us search—not with anger, but with truth."

Virgo stepped forward, her tone cold. "Ash leaves traces. Check every hand, every garment. The betrayer cannot hide forever."

Capricorn added, his voice steady. "Duty demands we uncover the truth. But beware—sometimes the truth wounds more than lies."

Sagittarius strummed his guitar, his melody uneasy. "Masks are symbols. They hide, but they also reveal. Perhaps the one who wore it is not who we expect."

Aquarius tilted his head, his voice distant. "Perhaps betrayal is not malice, but desperation. Perhaps the mask was worn by one who feared being seen."

Libra raised her arms, her voice calm but strained. "Balance! Do not accuse blindly. If you name the wrong soul, the circle will fracture beyond repair."

Cancer's tears shimmered. "Then let us uncover the truth, not with anger, but with love."

Scorpio examined the mask closely. His sharp eyes caught faint strands of hair tangled in the reeds—silver, shimmering under the lantern light.

Cancer gasped. "Silver… only one among us carries hair like that."

All eyes turned slowly toward Aquarius, whose pale hair glowed faintly in the night.

Aquarius' gaze remained distant, but his voice trembled for the first time. "I did not betray you. I sought freedom, not destruction. The mask was mine, but the lanterns… I did not move them."

The circle erupted in whispers.

Scorpio's voice was low, fierce. "You wore the mask. Whether you lit the lanterns or not, you hid your face. That is betrayal."

Cancer's heart ached. "But perhaps he speaks truth. Perhaps the mask was worn in fear, not malice."

Aquarius' eyes shimmered with tears. "I wanted to see if unity was real. I hid my face to test you. But I did not call the phantoms."

The circle stood divided—some believing him, others condemning him.

That night, Cancer and Scorpio sat together at the pier, the mask between them.

Cancer whispered, "If Aquarius is innocent, then the true betrayer still hides."

Scorpio's grip tightened on her hand. "Then we will keep searching. The mask is only the beginning. The truth will be unveiled."

The stars shimmered faintly, as if listening. The circle was fractured, suspicion spreading like cracks in stone. But at its heart, Cancer and Scorpio stood together—fragile, yet unyielding, determined to uncover the truth and prove that love could withstand even betrayal.
