Chapter 14 - Chapter 14_Out of character

Elena didn't sleep.

The message replayed in her head over and over, each word sinking deeper. By morning, fear had hardened into something sharper.

Resolve.

She shocked herself by getting dressed early.

Not carefully. Not hesitantly.

Deliberately.

When she stepped out of the apartment, the city felt louder than usual cars, voices, life moving forward whether she was ready or not. She lifted her chin and kept walking.

At the café downstairs, people filled the space. Businessmen, students, a woman laughing too loudly on her phone. Elena ordered coffee she didn't even want and sat near the window.

I won't hide, she thought.

She caught her reflection in the glass and almost laughed. This wasn't the quiet, careful version of her. This was someone braver. Someone acting before fear could catch up.

Her phone buzzed.

A text from Adrian.

Are you home?

She stared at the screen… and didn't reply.

That shocked her most of all.

Later, she went somewhere she'd never gone alone before Adrian's company building. The lobby was massive, cold, intimidating. People moved with purpose, heels clicking, voices sharp.

The receptionist looked up. "Can I help you?"

Elena swallowed. "Yes. I need to see someone."

As she waited, she noticed eyes on her. Curious. Assessing. One man whispered to another. A woman in a fitted suit studied her openly.

She wasn't invisible here.

Adrian appeared from the elevator, his expression shifting the moment he saw her.

"Elena?" His voice dropped. "What are you doing here?"

"I could ask you the same," she said quietly. "Why you're acting like I'm fragile."

That surprised him.

And it surprised her too.

A woman stepped out behind him confident, sharp-eyed. "Adrian, the board is waiting."

Elena glanced at her. The woman glanced back.

Something unspoken passed between them.

"I'll be fine," Elena said before Adrian could speak. "I just wanted you to know I'm not hiding anymore."

She turned and walked away before he could respond.

As she stepped back into the street, her hands trembled.

But she smiled.

Because for the first time since everything started, Elena wasn't reacting.

She was choosing.

And somewhere behind her, unseen, someone watched her leave ..and made a phone call.
