BWDC:SDDK Chapter 63: Something Is a Bit Off With This Holy Sword of Physics

"Phantom Thief Kid? Me? Are you for real?"

Ren Ichimonji was rendered speechless by the sudden label Suzuki Sonoko had slapped on him.

He often thought about telling "riddlers" to get out of Gotham City, but he never expected the day would come when he'd be mistaken for one himself.

Well, mistaken for the Phantom Thief Kid, anyway.

Ren sighed. "What makes you think I'm the Phantom Thief Kid?"

"Is it the cape or the magic? My cape is black, and Kid's is white, isn't it?"

"Even if you want to call me a phantom thief, I'd be Phantom Thief Corbeau. How could I possibly be Kid?"

--- Phantom Thief Corbeau?

Standing nearby, Conan couldn't help but feel puzzled when he heard that specific name.

When Mouri Ran had first mentioned the name "Phantom Thief Kid" to him, he had gone out of his way to investigate information regarding the thief. While he was at it, he had checked for other existing phantom thieves around the world, but there didn't seem to be anyone using the code name "Corbeau."

Who was the black-cloaked "Phantom Thief Corbeau" that Ren had just mentioned?

Doubt flickered in Conan's eyes.

However, before he could ask, Mouri Ran had already knelt down and asked in a low voice, "Conan, why are you here?"

"I thought you went out to play with your friends from the Junior Detective League?"

And they had left quite early. Mouri Ran remembered that by the time she woke up, Conan was already long gone. If she hadn't recalled Conan mentioning going out to play the night before, she would have thought he'd been kidnapped... after all, Conan disappearing mysteriously wasn't exactly a rare occurrence.

"Ah, me? I..."

Conan gave a sheepish laugh, trying to figure out how to explain the situation to Ran.

Just then, a voice came from the backstage area, bailing Conan out.

The members of the Junior Detective League had finished listening to the first half of the performance backstage and had run over to regroup with Conan.

Ran, who was already surprised to find Conan alone inside the Tokyo Budokan, was now even more stunned. Why were all the children of the Junior Detective League inside the Budokan?

These kids shouldn't have tickets for this concert, right? How did they get in? Even if they had slipped in, there was no way they should have been able to get backstage.

Ran didn't hide her bewildered expression. The members of the Junior Detective League immediately began chirping away, explaining what had happened.

"Ran-neechan, the Junior Detective League faced a huge crisis!"

"Yeah, yeah! Takayama-neesan and Nagano-niisan were kidnapped by thugs, and so was Conan!"

"In the end, thanks to Ren-niisan, Takayama-neesan and the others were rescued."

"That's why we're able to be inside the Budokan listening to the concert!"

The kids prattled on about the life-threatening events. Upon hearing the explanation, Ran was instantly shocked.

What? Something that dangerous had happened to Conan? Why was she completely in the dark about it?

Ran hurriedly turned to Conan for confirmation. "Conan, is what they're saying true?"

Though he knew this might make Ran worry or scold him, Conan had no choice but to tell the truth at this point.

He gave a sheepish nod and said, "That's how it was... if Ren-niisan hadn't come to rescue us in time, we really would have been in danger."

This revelation surprised Suzuki Sonoko. She recalled that there had never been news of the Phantom Thief Kid saving people... could it be that Ren really wasn't Kid, but just someone else who happened to be good at magic and looked similar?

Instantly, Sonoko's face turned visibly red. If that were the case, she'd be dying of embarrassment for mistaking his identity!

Ren, on the other hand, didn't care much. He hadn't acted solely to solve the case; part of the reason was to claim the mission rewards from the system. Whether others thanked him or not didn't matter. Regardless of their gratitude, he was going to intervene to finish the mission anyway.

However, just because Ren didn't care didn't mean Mouri Ran felt the same.

Hearing this, Ran said gratefully, "Thank you so much this time, Mr. Ren."

"I have to say, your abilities as a detective are truly impressive. You always manage to solve cases and find the truth in such a short amount of time..."

If he didn't have the habit of constantly calling himself Batman, she believed that with Ren's talent, it would only be a matter of time before he was invited onto television programs and became nationally famous like her father. Calling himself Batman, though... that might lead to copyright issues.

"I should thank Mr. Ren as well. If he hadn't helped this time, things would have been quite troublesome."

Conan's voice rang out.

Ran looked down at Conan in her arms, surprised that he had followed up with a thank you. But she immediately realized that it hadn't been Conan speaking. The voice had come from the backstage area.

Takayama Minami and Nagano Shiina appeared at the backstage entrance; it was Takayama Minami who had just spoken.

It was only then that Ran noticed Takayama Minami and Conan had identical voices.

"There's still a bit of time before the show starts. How about I treat everyone to some food?"

Takayama Minami smiled and waved her wallet. "I brought plenty of money this time."

Ren: ?

Why emphasize bringing plenty of money?

Ren was puzzled. He glanced sideways at Genta, whose eyes were practically glowing, and the mystery was instantly solved.

Fine, with that one around, you definitely need a lot of food.

Ren and the others had no intention of turning down Takayama Minami's treat. Ran followed behind at first, but just as they were about to leave the Budokan, she realized something and asked everyone to wait a moment.

The group stopped to wait for Ran to return, while Ren focused his attention on the attributes of the new item he had just received.

[Item Name: The Kind Holy Sword of Physics]

[Note 1: Once, a boy who was born with a smile used this Holy Sword of Physics to strike a thief who had stolen the tires from an urban hero's ride, creating a new anti-hero.]

[Note 2: Everyone beaten to death by this Holy Sword eventually came back to life. Resurrection means they didn't stay dead, so this is a kind Holy Sword of Physics. Absolutely no one will stay dead under this Holy Sword of Physics!]

Wait... isn't this note a bit off?

Ren paused, then it suddenly clicked.

Isn't this just the crowbar the Joker used to beat Jason Todd? Giving this thing to Batman is a bit too "hellish," don't you think?

What do you mean by "absolutely no one will stay dead under this Holy Sword"?

Is it because the thing can't kill people, or because the people killed by it will eventually come back to life like Jason Todd?

Ren directed a disapproving look at the system screen.

System, your conscience is truly rotten!
